- This is part three of the historic "Storm of the Century" or "Blizzard of 1993" in Alabama.
These clips are in chronological order. This one begins at 12 a.m. on March 13, 1993 and ends just before 1 a.m. Notice how the power is flickering at the station during the past few minutes of the clip.
The blizzard was really cranking up in Birmingham by this time. Spann reported 6-8" on the ground and winds gusted to 51 mph on Red Mountain at approximately 12:50.
Meteorologist James Spann and Kevin Collins of WBRC 6 report on this historic storm. - Наука та технологія
James Spann has dedicated his life to the weather and the people here in Alabama. I just hope he knows that there are many of us who is very thankful that he is our weatherman.
I couldn’t agree more, he’s honestly the only person who put a smile on my face while hiding in a tornado shelter.
He’a just like the Queen in that I’ve known anyone else on channel 6 to be the weatherman my whole life. 😂
Great footage and WOW what a storm. Certainly a 100+ year event with snow literally on the golf coast and 2+ ft throughout the the majority of lower Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, with 3, 4, and even 5 feet accumulations to boot. I'm fortunate enough to have observed this event, and the week off from school was unforgettably fun.
I'll never forget this storm. I was 5 at the time, and it's the first major storm I remember. I was living in NYC at the time, and I remember watching news updates about it, and my mind was blown away when they would show satellite images of the entire storm.
Hard to believe it's been 26 years
I am a North/East Canadian, so this kind of storm happens to us like 10 times per winter. But I am always fascinated by THIS storm, and I watch these clips every few years. These 2 reporters are just so AWESOME and so relatable!
There were some areas a long the Gulf Coast that had wind gusts over 100 miles per hour.
I was on the Hernando county florida coast.....Standing in the middle of the road in neck deep, water looking at my grandmothers house where you could only see about a foot of the roof.Later that day there were "gulf effect" sleet showers with temps in the 30s in the middle of the afternoon.....in central Florida....in the middle of March.
I lived just North of Birmingham during this storm and our power went out around 9 pm Friday night and it didn't come back on until Tuesday afternoon. We couldn't watch any of the coverage on tv, but thank God we had a portable radio that we could listen to to get an idea just how bad and historic this storm was. And thank God for fireplaces because it was so COLD!! We got at least 18 inches with 24 in drifts in places. I'm 56 yrs old now and have never seen this kind of snow in Alabama since then.
Like most, I have vivid memories of this storm. I was trekking back and forth from the neighbor's house across the street through the worst part of it. I remember the weird green lightning and the thunder, which was eerie with all the snow. We were north of Birmingham and had at least 10 inches. The drifts were up to 2 feet. Our power was off for a week, but we had gas cooking and water, so we were much more fortunate than others. Great memories of playing in the snow afterward. I've lived up north since, so I've seen as much (or more) than that, but the memories make it seem like much more!
This is why we go overboard on the milk and bread, folks--I remember my family (2 parents, 2 kids age 5 and 8) sleeping in my parents bed to stay warm for three straight days because we had no power. All of our refrigerated stuff was on the back porch. Crazy.
Like every snow we have from now on will be just like that one. I can't stand it when he starts talking "Bread and milk". People don't know the real definition of a blizzard.
Best. Day. Ever.
Thundersnow in Birmingham?! OMG.
I wish it would do that again i had a blast making snow caves
Al Shalakaed HELL. NO
We had snow in Pensacola FL off of this storm it was amazing
@crkt75 My power went out Sat. evening around 5pm. I had just finished cooking a huge pot of spaghetti. Something told me to hurry up and cook. It was out until Monday, but luckily we had a wood burning fireplace in a room where we could shut the doors off. That thunder snow was wild, wasn't it?
I remember this down here in MOBILE
The good old days when James Spann had bangs..
Remember this very well. 28 years ago this friday and saturday.... 3-12-93.
Yes, and this storm occured on a Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th in 1993. 2021 and 1993 have the exact same calendar.
Think Kevin Collins deserves some recognition on this he was out in it many times throughout the night
I feel so bad for that poor guy out in the snow!
Yes, not only was the extreme cold, snow and wind chills such a hazard, but so was the lightning.
Blizzards with thunder are pretty rare!
I had NEVER seen anything like this storm.. I was stuck in my all electric apartment .. my parents were on the other side of town in their house that had gas heat.. I was lightning and snowing.. it was unreal:((
I remember this specially when your in the projects everybody is out and made sure everybody had something cause our parents prepared for it..
Yes and amen
That's when parents were parents
The Birmingham area gets so much, violent E/F4 and E/F5 tornadoes, blizzards, and derechos.
A blizzard is extremely unusual. I'm not sure there's ever been a blizzard in Birmingham other than this one.
I was 12. The movie American Ninja came on that night. Remember peeking through the blinds during commercials and seeing blowing snow and lightning.
I definitely remember the Great Blizzard of '93. I was on the tail end of my high school life, and it was just an absolute mess! I was walking all through downtown Gadsden to the mall, and back home. It was a ghost town there.
@BRENT69696 Yeah it was. I do wonder what our winter holds this year, especially with these colder than avg. temps? I love James Spann. I am in Ga, so I can't watch him daily. I do watch him when he goes live un ustream during bad weather, and chat in the chat room. : )
I was 16. Cullman alabama. In the county. No power for days, but loved the snow !!
My 71 yr old father is from the Birmingham AL area he moved back to there from here in ohio a couple of years ago as a black dude here in ohio telling the good folk of alabama no matter the color of your skin i'm getting off track let me say this was around 19 years ago but i have to say you alabama folk got your first good taste of winter weather ya'll are lucky to never have snow but you all seen the tough winter weather we have up here in the north but you all toughed it out in the south...
Heck yeah man
Power goes out in AlaBAMA when the first snowflake hits a power line and it can take up to 5 days to get it back. It's not the snow that gets us, it's the hurricanes and tornadoes.
I was trapped in my car for 11 hours.
My dad was a fire fighter who carried a pregnant woman going into labor down a highway to the hospital with snow up to his knees
My mom was pregnant with me having labor pains. I was born a few weeks later.
long's yo naked
I was in the 2nd grade... My dad woke me up in the middle of the night to come see the snow. It was snowing so hard you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Snowflakes as big as the palm of your hand were falling, it had piled up to about 1ft deep on our porch in just 3 hours. The really cool part was seeing lightning with loud crashes of thunder as the snow fell. The really uncool part was the snow piling up so heavy on tree branches they snapped and fell on power lines. But we had plenty of food, a grill, and kerosene heaters so we were set. That freak blizzard was a special thing to be a part of and I'm thankful to have witnessed it.
I was born the month before this in NC
I was 19 drunk and snowed in with my girlfriend. Good times. The thunder and lightning with snow was really weird though.
