- In this tutorial, we show you how to paint a Ionrach Namarti Thrall. We have had plenty of requests for this one so we thought it would be a fun one to do and boy, did we have a whale of a time doing this one too. We dive into painting their pale green skin as well as that wonderful blue tinted armour. These are fantastic miniatures and a joy to paint and like us, we're sure you'll be hooked and will soon be painting an army for yourself.

Why I like Duncan: in a world of paint faster, paint easier, paint cheaper, Duncan is the voice of slow down, take your time, and you can make it look great.
thousand sons blue and fenrisians grey combined
what a heretical combo
Or is it...
😏😏😏
Magnus did nothing wrong!
Duncan, Roger, there isn’t much to say other than THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE DOING 😊 You guys are heroes!
Wow, thanks Greg for the great compliments. And thank you for giving so much support, we really appreciate it.
Ikr. IMO,their vids are nicer than the ones on warhammer TV
Every Duncan's video has a therapeutic effect
I've been leaving Duncan's tutorials on the background while I paint for a while now. I swear, Duncan's voice is pure ASMR.
He's like a modern Bob Ross :)
"All you need is some blood for the Blood God" - Duncan, 2020.
Awesome video! Just got my Fury of the Deep box as part of my “new year, new army” challenge. Thanks for the help on the paint scheme. Ionrach is by far my favorite scheme so far. Cheers
Your videos help a lot, a complete newcomer and still haven’t painted anything but these vids help allot and make me want to try it. thanks for the good vids
Glad to help
Just go for it. Just slap some paint on and go from there. You will be crap a first but with each consecutive model you will learn from your mistakes and inevitably get better. All the actual time ive been painting adds up to about a years worth after being in the hobby a couple years and the progress ive made from my first attempt to my latest model i did a few days ago is staggering. Not to blow my own trumpet. Ur gonna mess some miniatures up but thats part of it. Just slap that paint on (two thin Coates) and youve already made progress.
The thing I like the most about these videos is that it highlights the skill and technique involved in painting miniatures.
And I like that about miniature painting. It's all skill and technique, which can be learned and practiced.
Edit: Also, I like how he has his own channel now, so he can do more with other companies paints, brushes, and models.
I like him having his own channel and am glad he’s doing other things! Personally I only use citadel paints but use all manor of brushes! I also hope to start other models maybe, I’ve done the creature caster queen of Malifica and whilst I know it’s still tzeentchy, I hope to do other models and things like that. I mostly agree but don’t think other paints are necessary with the versatility of citadel paints!
i think my favorite part of this video is " now this thrall is ready to join a raiding party in the search for souls" with nice relaxing hawaiian back ground music
Your videos are brilliant Duncan. More more more
The idoneth are so cool. I love those fish bois even if teclis doesn’t
Duncan your are a legend, thanks to your tuturials I learned everything I know about painting miniatures. I wish you the absolute best in this new stage of your career!
The Bob Ross of miniture painting
Fantastic video. Thankyou for teaching so many of us how to paint qaulity minis 🙂
Thank you for the kind words Vincent and thank you for taking the time to watch our tutorials 😊
You are the Bob Ross of mini painting.
Goobertown Hobbies has that distinction!
Just picked up a pack of the Reavers and the perfect compliment is your video! Thanks again for always making fantastic videos!
Excellent work! I always enjoy watching your tutorials and learning new techniques.
Thank you very much!
Those videos are so relaxing! It is a pleasure to look how every detail becomes awesome in several steps that are actually very easy for a first view. I guess I will never paint like that cause I do it another way that I like more, but at the same time I can't stop waching any video on this chanell once it comes. You are doing an extremely important and mesmerizing job here
Duncan your painting tutorials make me want to collect those armies
I know right
I am soo glad I found this video. I have a starter box of Inodeth Deepkin and was too afraid to paint them. But I will give it a try thanks to your video.
AMAZING as always Duncan. Great Job. Thanks for all that you do brother
Our pleasure and thanks for the support :-)
Love that skin colour - very handy for some post apocalyptic figures I have.
Great work as usual- stay safe
Every time i hear him say "you dont have to do this" in his videos, all i hear in my twisted mind is a big ass taunt. "come on pantzy" And i know he doesnt mean it like that.
Thank you for all thoose really nice tutorials Duncan
Watched this for some little tips for my deep kin army, very proud to say that our recipes are almost exactly the same hah! Loving your channel man!
Ah nice, something to cheer me up.
That's a great looking nemeti thrall, Duncan :)
Glad to see a warhammer miniature painting video again from Duncan. That cloth looks amazing!
Only a wet palette is missing ;)
Just discovered this channel. Duncan, the lord of two layers. I've missed you lol
I don't even play Idoneth and this video is making me want to paint some.
Thanks for the tutorial, exactly what i needed as a newbie.
Brilliant painting! I like to use a tiny bit of thinned out nuln oil in the eye sockets to make them look really sunken in and dark on my thralls.
Duncan, I couldn't say this on the WH TV videos but damn dude you're an inspiration
Thank you :-)
I don't know how you can say Namarti Thrall without wanting to roll the r's in both words, it's just so satisfying to say it that way.
Duncan!! I think you’re awesome 🙂
Thanks heaps Duncan! 🙂
No prob buddy
Finally getting around to painting Idoneth because everyone in my immediate hame circle is playing a Sigmar elf faction, so fingers crossed Duncan does an Eidolon of Mathlann video.
I’m going to painting an orks kommando kill team soon and I wanted to do albino green, to show they’ve been in the void for far too long.
I’ll probably use this recipe but with the new kroak green shade instead of drakenhoff. Exactly what I’m looking for
Watching him painting a minituare always looks so easy. I am a beginne to painting and still doing a lot of mistakes eben after painting nearly a hundred minis. Thank you Duncan for showing us tips and tricks. It really helps
Our pleasure and thank you for taking the time to comment.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA i have to thank for the great videos
Much better lighting. 👌
Very nice video Duncan. Good luck with the channel.
Thank you very much!
Still rockin thanks from me you guys got it big up yerselves
Great tutorial as always by a legend🙂
Ahhh, you're too kind 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA that's at least how I feel🙂
I really miss you being uploaded every day but I totally understand. Also, my painting has much improved from watch your videos
This looks great! I really like how this turned out. Especially with the skin. The only thing that I'm not a huge fan of is the highlight on the upper lip. I always find that highlighting the upper lip gives almost a mustache-effect. I find it looks a lot better if you highlight the lower lip instead. It also makes sense that light would catch a protruding lower lip more so that the part of the lip directly under the nose.
Oh wow I just made a video on painting Namarti Thralls and this one is published the day after. haha Good work Duncan.
Thousand sons blue followed by Fenrisian grey .. Oh Duncan :)
Thanks for your vídeos, they’re very interesting even if it’s a bit difficult for me to understand some of your fastest speaking (sorry, I just passed my Cambridge B1 English exam last summer). But the images are quite clear. Great Job and thanks again for teaching. Stay safe and greetings from Spain.
Thank you , DRPA .
Our pleasure!
Amazing
Thanks for another great video, any chance you can please do a video on the new Necron colour scheme? Especially the jade stone? Thanks!
Hi, as usuall amazing video, i love the fact dad you show layering proces, no its easier to understend, but, maybe for future video you could show more basing technics, like a vide compose of difrent beses types, fluks, ruins and efects that can help bring the whole model to this higher level, cheers ;)
I can't tell you how much I anticipate a new video! Where can I send suggestions? I would love to see something involving warlock bronze painting a dark worn bronze is hard. Duncan you are a saint how would you do Verdigris without using GW oxide paint? Love you man! Hope you are making money from this!
Feels so weird to be able to leave a comment. Much prefer these 20+ minute videos
Hey guys, could you do a video on how to lean up mould lines and how much cleaning is really necessary? I always feel like it has to be perfect and it takes me forever. I would love to see the process that you use to get minis ready for paint.
Technical vídeo tip, Duncan. Much better black background yo show the finishs in the minis. Godo work Duncan!!
Incredible tutorial once again ( Like always )! Oh boy any chance of more regular elves painting guides in the future ( Like IoB Swordmasters , would be dope )? Have to practise those elvish painting skills before those pointy aelves make a comeback ;)
Great video as always!
Something I've done since the Contrast line came out that, IMO, gives a better effect than Nuln Oil on metallics is to thin Black Templar about 50/50 with water or medium instead. Much darker in recesses and against objects like hilts and the like. Give it a shot! It's straight up replaced Nuln Oil for me.
Interesting idea! I’ll try it on my necron immortals that I started in the new colour scheme!
lord duncan unchained! opens the video by using a army painter brush! he does what he wants!
Soon Duncan will learn how well he had it at Citadel when he has to buy his own metallics!
Can you please do a skaven tutorial
Big fan here! Will you be doing videos using other brands of paint though? Scale 75 is amazing!
Thanks a tonne for all the painting videos Duncan and Roger they're helping improve my skills two thin coats a time. Also do you think you might do a tutorial for the Silent King whenever he's eventually released?
Oh god yes that’d be awesome!
Firstly, thank you Barry. As for the Silent King.....we'll see what we can do.
When I first started 40K, I started painting watching your videos. Even today, I find your method of painting so much sharper and crispier than some of the more advanced techniques. Will you be doing more 40K models with 9th edition on the horizon?
OF course. We can't wait to tackle that new Necron scheme.
I really enjoy the how-to paint series. Could you do some sort of mounted cavalry of some kind? I am painting some mounted Teutonic knights and i am looking for ways to paint the horses
Watch this space ;-)
Looks like Pallid Wych Flesh is the exact color of Duncan's background.
Thought about starting a Idoneth warcry warband, then this came out!. It's just the Namarti heads that are throwing me off. Wish they were more Wood Elf like.
Duncan, first of all, amazing tutorial (just like the rest of your work). Then, i am trying to figure out how to paint jade, lapis lazuli and corals weapons (and eventually a whole Sigmarites army :P), but could not find a tutorial for either one. Any chance you will make one?
I bought a new catachan model and some other catachan minis. I would really like to hear the Duncan method for a suggestion on colors from a source I can trust!
I don’t know if you’re open to suggestions or requests, but I’m interested in picking up Mephiston and I’m not sure if I have the ability or the knowhow to paint him faithfully, but if you could a tutorial video for him I would be infinitely grateful. Please keep up the quality content!
can we get an ork video!!!!
Let's start a Waaagh! And get krumpin'!
Fantastic as always! When the Sons of Behemat are released, do you plan on painting one? I'd love to see your take on one!
That is most certainly on our radar in in our plans :-)
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Im officially excited!
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA *gasp*
Hey Duncan,
I'd like to add some servitors to my imperial guard army, but the GW ones are pretty expensive.
So my question would be, how I could convert them?
How is his hair so short?! Does he live with a hairdresser?
his hair is painted with two thin coats of texture paint and a drybrush of gold.
😲 How did you know???
Gangster. Rock a beard! just go for it!!!!
A fantastic video on this colour scheme! How on earth do you get your Pallid Wych Flesh so smooth in the pot, mine always comes out somewhat chalky.
In one of your tutorials could you show a good way to get behind shields or guns? I have the hardest time getting in there without getting paint on an area I have already painted
I’d like to see a painting tutorial for an Ork vehicle in the Deathskulls color scheme.
Could you do a video on fixing Citadel pots please? Lost way too many paints because the pots wont close due to dried paint around the cap.
As always the tutorials are amazing! Im hoping for a Hersey Dark Angel or more modern incarnation.
As a suggestion: Can you put some color that contrasts with the Medium? You cant really see the medium while on the pallet so it would help to see how much medium there is.
I get what your saying but it would probably contaminate the medium! Sorry :-( but I don’t think that’d be a good idea
@@rafaelz6211 its not actually mixing the medium, just putting some orange, for example, on the pallet and then after it dries putting the medium on top so you can actually see it.
Edit: For example
Great video once again, could you try to paint some batman miniature game models pls, they look realy cool and I just got my first set of bane goons. Thank you
Hey Duncan; would you mind sharing your reasons for using midtone undercoats like greys instead of brighter ones like white? I'm trying to up my painting game and I really like your results.
Ah yes, just what I needed today!
How are you two doing duncan and roger? All right I hope?
We are all good thank you Benjamin. Hope you and your family are safe too.
I absolutly love this job. Im currently deciding on my scheme for Idoneth... Im tempted betwin that and bronze armor with silver fulfilling role of secondary color of bronze as per this vid. Do you think Akhleian Green woul work instead of Talassar blue?
Are there any skaven models in your tutorial queue for the near future? They're my favorite fantasy army, and I loved your thanqol videos, so I'd love to see a stormfiend tutorial or something in the future.
I'd love to see you paint something from Konflikt '47 or Rumbleslam!
Mmmmmm.....
How did Duncan single handedly make contrast paints not only viable, but almost necessary in painting most models?
The only Citadel brushes I’d ever recommend are dry brushes. Everything else is hot expensive garbage. Same goes for W&N - you have a very high chance of getting a crap brush, which, coincidentally, are rebranded as Citadel brushes.
Raphaël 8404 is the way to go.
Hi Duncan. Do you have any recommendations on how to achieve the old Scaly Green color from Citadel with contrast paints? Terradon Turquoise sadly doesn't quite live up to it.
Hey duncan, great work! Have you got any videos on how to paint Runewar mini's?
Also keep up the great work, keeps me motivated during this lockdown 😁
We have had a couple requests for these so we may juts have to add it to our ever-growing list 😊
I am going to steal that skin color scheme for my genestealers cult :D I would like to give it a more greenish tone though, would it work if I replaced the drakenhof nightshade with coelia greenshade ?
I'd like to see Aspect of Sea
Smooth and crisp work , and thank you for the upload 😊🤘🏻🇩🇰
Our pleasure 😊
How did you apply the undercoat? Airbrush or with a brush? Is that on top of a primer? Really struggling with spray primers, which are flooding detail even with a couple of short burst sprays, and looking for an alternative.
Any plans for a black templars tutorial?
Wow, more than an eighth of people who’ve seen this like it and it’s only been 20 minutes.
Hey, Mr. Rhodes and team; long time listener, first time caller. I love that we're able to comment on your videos and show our support, finally! I'd love your opinion on something: using GW paints, what mixture would you recommend for a nice, true Blood Ravens Red? The White Dwarf offering was great on technique, but was just too red. Blood Ravens feel more orange and brown than they talked about in the Paint Splatter. Thanks in advance!!
I'd say maybe Word Bearers Red. It's a recent addition to the range, so not many have noticed it, but it looks like a dark red with a slight orange-brown tint. Could work well for Blood Ravens. I've actually considered using it for them before you asked this question, as I've been thinking of making a kill team of them.
@@CyberDagger003 Yeah, I can see that. It's just a touch dark. I know there's a recipe they've used at GW, before, I just don't know what it is... Lol
best part of this miniature - you dont need to paint eyes
Is there any tips to avoid making mistakes while painting because I keep messing up on the clones. 🎨😊
Could you do a paint guide for Horus Heresy Scheme Plague Marines using contrasts?
Nice idea. We'll add to to our ever growing list
Painting along. A cannoness, not a Thrall though. Its like having someone to paint with :)
I painted along but used my Canoptek Wraiths! It’s fun actually.
