Polar bears were fitted with cameras so scientists could see if the bears can adapt to longer summers and shrinking sea ice. The incredible POV footage offers a breathtaking look at life in the changing Arctic through the eyes of a polar bear.

Polar bears are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on the Arctic Ocean, depending on sea ice for their food and habitat. But not all sea ice is the same. The way ice moves, melts, and forms varies from region to region. The dynamics are so different that scientists from Polar Bears International have divided the polar bear’s range into four distinct ecoregions. The Archipelago, Convergent, Divergent, and Seasonal Sea Ice Ecoregions.
Spread across these 4 regions are 19 distinct polar bear populations. 2 of the polar bear populations are growing. 4 are likely stable. 3 have seen significant loss in the number of bears. The other 10 polar bear populations are a complete mystery. We know little to nothing about those bears.
Polar bears have perfectly evolved to prey on ringed seals and bearded seals, which polar bears catch from atop the sea ice. Seals will cut 10 to 15 breathing holes in the ice and they’ll keep these holes open all winter long. Every 5-15 minutes, seals will surface to breathe at one of the holes or at air pockets trapped under the ice. Polar bears can smell a seal's breathing hole from more than half a mile away. When a seal surfaces… the polar bear strikes.
Polar bear heads are longer and more slender than other bears so they can fit into these holes. Even polar bear teeth are specialized for seals. Polar bears have a larger gap between their sharp, front canines and back molars. This is known as a diastema and it acts like a hook for a polar bear to snag a seal. Polar bear skulls have an elongated crest - the longest of any bear - giving polar bears the strength to pull a seal out of the water.
Healthy polar bears only eat the seal blubber, leaving the carcass for scavengers such as ravens and arctic foxes. One polar bear can eat 45 kg (or 100 lbs) of seal blubber in a single sitting, providing about a week’s worth of energy.
In 1980, there were 1,100 polar bears in the Seasonal Sea Ice Ecoregion. As of 2022 the population was just over 600 polar bears.

Polar bears aren't the only animals affected by a loss of sea ice. Other species like walruses, penguins, and even snow crab have been affected by shrinking sea ice.

Very interesting and informative. You showed that not just polar bears live of their prey, seems birds and arctic foxes (and probably other animals) depend on the polar bears for their food. It would seem to me that the danger to the polar bear population would also pose a danger to other populations as well. Thank you for keeping us informed!

I fell in love with the polar bears from watching San Diego Zoo’s live camera of the polar bears. I had always hoped one of the male-female pair would produce a cub. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be; possibly due to the warmer temperatures down in Southern California.
There were some famous polar bear cubs that had to be hand raised by humans in a couple of zoos in Europe. Knut and Siku got me even more interested and hooked on watching them. Now that I am in a different phase of my life, I have not been able to follow the bears’ stories as much. I still follow Polar Bear International on YT though! Love these beautiful but deadly creatures!

I feel like the Russian polar bears could potentially adapt to life on land. Especially as much of Siberia lacks infrastructure and roads, in many places, and some areas have no human inhabitants still. Of course, that also makes it difficult to know these things for sure. I also wonder if any of the Russian bears have interbred (grolar/pizzly bears) with brown bears on land, similar to the anomalies we’ve seen in North America. Random interbreeding is likely a result of the extended time being spent on land by polar bears. It’s possible in siberia, at least, they’ve even adapted to hunt land-based prey, muskox, reindeer, etc. There are lots of Russian reports of polar bears invading small villages during certain parts of the year… so I wonder..

Can we make artificial platforms>? Seals would come bears would come? Or no?

    • @KPassionate
      @KPassionate  25 днів тому

Seals would not use them. They need sea ice. In addition, the scale at which you are talking about would be impossible. Finally, sea ice is the only place that can grow sea ice algae which is the basis for the entire food chain in the arctic.

It will be great to know what the foundation is actually doing. From the page it seems they are keeping statistics, not helping the bears. Climate change can't be attacked just by lowering Energy consumption. In the case of cities we should create infrastructure to prepare for the disasters to come, and in the case of endangered species, even if we don't like the idea, is time to start researching interventions.

According to AZA: "PBI is the preeminent resource for polar bear information, scientific, and educational resources, and has a measurable impact on the preservation of polar bear habitat. PBI works with the leading scientists on research projects such as population studies, capture and release telemetry studies, and husbandry, nutrition, physiology, and human-impact topics and PBI's wide range of educational projects inspire, inform, and empower people to make a difference by reducing carbon emissions and motivating others to do the same."

Keeping statistics and monitoring bears is vitally important. In fact, it was their activity data that led to the bears being listed as a threatened species.

I will get in trouble now. It seems that is what I want to do nowadays. I keep seeing videos about what we can't do, or commentary the same as. But yet we have drones all over our skies by many countries keeping track of all other activity, especially to maintain some military advantage. IF, we found a better purpose for technology we could in fact monitor the entire planet. That is happening now of course, but it is for monitoring people. Not the planet. And now I must delete my account. Which I won't. I do love your channel.

I just read that Svalbard had no sea ice this last winter and that there are different plants, animals and fish there now.
They didn't mention polar bears. I see now why they didn't. There weren't any polar bears.
There isn't anything for them to eat and survive.
It just makes me furious that supposedly there isn't such a thing as climate change. And it's the fossil fuel industry that is paying politicians to say this. I never thought that I would say those words.
Please, vote out the mostly Republicans who are doing this to our planet. Vote for people who will do something to save our species and the polar bears.

    • @dottyfulcrum

If you are living elsewhere in the world, simply voting for people who acknowledge that it is we who must do things should do the trick. For instance, the "Canada" that is mentioned a lot. Don't live there anymore so don't know the names of the political parties or what they say they believe in. But, I am certain that the names of the parties are not the same as in the USA.
I get your drift, though. 🙂

Despite everything that subject matter experts know, we haven't even slowed down the rate at which we are increasing our carbon pollution. I don't like being a negative nelly but so long as BP/Exxon get to choose who we vote for, climate change isn't going to be addressed.
