The more I discover Liszt "the symphony composer" the more I fall in love with his work. I still cannot fathom why Liszt's symphonic compositions are so underrated & underperformed by the great World class orchestras....

The sad thing is that even during his own time morons like Brahms and Tchaikovsky were openly hostile to Liszt's compositions. I do hope that someday people are open minded enough to fully appreciate Liszt's Zukunftmusick !!!

11:40 one of Liszt's finest melodies and 26:20 - that chord progression descending into darkness is truly breathtaking

Wonderful piece. And I have loved Haitink's Liszt for years. He and Masur were something of Liszt specialists.

Larger than life...grandiloquent...pompous...in-your-face colossal! Who'd ever imagine?

I think Haitink's glacial tempi do the work a great disservice.
The amplitude of speed in different recordings is quite astonishing. 27 Minutes is definately the slowest, I have heard this done in 16, which was way too fast.
I prefer something around 22 Minutes.

I might be reaching, but I can't help to hear "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zaren" in the lower strings at the start
