The best orchestra was the Berliner Philharmoniker in the last years of the Second World War: apart from outstanding musical qualities, one senses the existential doubts throughout. Never was there more penetrating, more intense music than at the end of the war with the total collapse.
Oh My Dear God! Liszt's LesPréludes is the best ever with Karajan! Nobody could interprete Liszt like him. I am, as a Hungarian born, 've bee moved down to the bottom of my heart and soul. Great thanks to Zauber620! :-)
Absolutely. Karajan was the most fanatical musical conservative conductor to live. I absolutely despise improvisations on compositions myself, which is why I adore Karajan.
Do you know that the Part from Minute 2.45 to ~ 3.15 was the "entry music" to EVERY mesage in the nazi radio for Unternehmen Barbarossa, the war against the soviet union from 1941 to 1945! Every german knows this melody, its the sound of 30 million people murderd! In this seconds is the complete tragedy of germany! Karajan, Liszt, Berliner Philharmonica, here in use from Hitler and Goebbels for the biggest cruelty in the history of mankind. The german tragedy...
When you open the pages of a reputable dictionary for the word 'masterpiece' and find the word, this starts playing at 2:47 onwards - this is 'beyond words good'.
Furtwangler's version is also great, so are Daniel Barenboim with BPO and Riccardo Muti with WPO, and a few more other interpretations as well. But none of them is as breath taking as Karajan's. Something in this version grabs your heart and soul throughout the song. Genius!
Well, this is a studio version of a world class piece of music, played by a world class orchestra with a world class conductor in a world class studio, so everything but being the best would have been a blunder. It sounds magnificient indeed!
You are right. This Karajan version is just outstanding. It is so powerful compared to the other versions. But I love this piece because it was the background for the very old Flash Gordon serial. Every time I hear it I see Ming the Merciless! I can't help it LOL!
This is the best version I have ever heard. I got this during the great Napster feeding frenzy, and since then wondered who the conductor and orchestra were. The mystery has now been solved.
yes, you can. but this a blessing AND a curse. I have yet to hear better versions of most romantic composers, Beethoven, Liszt ..... However, I can't bear Karajan versions of Mozart or Haydn. His style for me simply does not fit with the "Vienna Classic"
Karajan, Fielder y Solti.
I heard this first while watching the original Flash Gordon series on a neighbor's TV around 1951-2. The music went right through me, and I was never the same. It began my love of classical music. Little Richard and Fats Domino had to make room for Liszt. And boy did Les Prelude drape myth over the series. Elevated it, so it still plays today when you can find it.
I close my eyes and listen... soldiers with radios available on the Ost Front would have heard this every evening as Radio Berlin signed off for the night... takes me far away in my mind.... Even my cat, "Prettyface" seems to like this music.. (can cats really respond to, or like music?

Yes, MUSICAITALIA I have it on cd. It's on RCA "Living Stereo" disc featuring: Prokofiev - "Love For Three Oranges", Chopin - "Les Sylphides", Liszt- "Les Preludes" - "Mazeppa".
karajan disciple of furtwägler the ace of nazi conducters who was not nazi. Sadly so much romantic german music only became infamous via wwii. What would the ride of the valkyries be without the luftwaffe? Evil genius.
IIRC, this tune was used by German radio when signing off it's broadcasts to the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. Very catchy tune! I like this performance, it is a genuine German production as it was done in ww2. Altho I am American of neither Hungarian nor German stock, it rocks me to my soul... truly great and inspired music!
I concur with the comment below. Although the Furtwangler version seems more vital, energetic. Perhaps because of the age, probably pre-WW 2.
Michele e Gabriele, accompagnateci SEMPRE!!!

This is very good, better than the Fiedler to me. That one was a little too "pops" for my tastes. I wish they had the recording by Gianandrea Noseda on UA-cam as it is supposed to the be the absolute best.
15:41 = The Official Moment of "THAT DOES IT." Good finally has seen enough, rolls up its sleeves, backs Evil into the corner, and delivers it the final asskicking of its unnatural fucking life
This is exactly why classical music is timeless. What a performance under Karajan and the finest orchestra on the planet!
Are there better ones on Mars?
@@rainerausdemspring3584 Being the Red Planet, Mars has several Russian symphonies, playing the works of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Borodin... 😁

You are exactly correct about Karajan. No one else comes close.
I just now listened to 5 other versions. None of them can touch this one. Karajan is the man.
Absolutely. Karajan was the most fanatical musical conservative conductor to live. I absolutely despise improvisations on compositions myself, which is why I adore Karajan.

Karajan never fails to astonish me.
2:25 - Oh my god, the grandeur. THE GRANDEUR!
16:52 - when the orchestra is so in tune that it ends up sounding like an organ
Strauss and Scriabin used this effect with pleasure
Undoubtedly the best version that I have heard.

LISZT THE BEST........
LISZT + KARAJAN = PERFECT !!!!
Karjan is stricter than Solti
karajan heard the main theme of die deutche wochenschau (the german weekly) every week at the movies, during wwii. How could he forget it?
@Milnes, Corelli, di Stefano and more Because you are stupid ..... very stupid
Liszt genius!!!!!!####
Brilliant ,sounds like a wake up call for humanity
In 1941 it was a wake up call - but not for all humanity, by any means.
Les Preludes was banned for a while since it was the fanfare for Nazi Germany's war victories so ...
It was certainly a wake up call for Josef Stalin in 1941 as the theme for Operation Barbarossa.
Sublime!!!
Liszt Ferenc:Les Preludes

The best and the most beautiful version!!👍👍👍❤❤❤
Two of my great favorites: von Karajan and Les Preludes. Gorgeous!!!
YES, a thousand times Yes.

Ein zeitloses Meisterwerk, perfekt umgesetzt, welch ein Genuß!
In this piece Liszt has a similar sense of musical drama as Wagner.
not surprising, Wagner was married to Liszt's daughter.....
