I have a 28 year old LC with the 1FZ-FE engine. I would avoid trying to use the plastic radiator drain plug as it will most likely snap. When cold simply remove the radiator cap, set the heater to hot to allow the system to drain and pull off the bottom radiator hose at the radiator, it will totally drain the system. Then empty the expansion bottle and wash it out. Then pop the bottom hose back on and refill the radiator, topping up the expansion bottle. Run the engine with the radiator cap off and top up as needed. Once the heater blows hot, pop the cap on. Once cooled, just check the level in the radiator, it really is that easy. I have always used Toyota pre mix red coolant and have only changed it 3 times since buying the vehicle 18 years ago. The coolant always comes out lovely and clean and being a quality coolant, the whole system is in great condition.
Great video, thanks for the detail on this as not many people are mentioning the block drain. Should be a huge hit for 80s owners getting ready to service. Take care!
Thanks for this info, the manual makes no mention of any of this. So I wasn’t clear if you ran the engine just with distilled water without the housing (@5:15min) on at all.

Thanks Mate. I hope people get more aware of the block drain as a lot of debris gets drained from there.

That’s a great video. Definitely something I need to do on my 91. And yes, that’s the first video where I’ve even seen that other drain mentioned.
Thanks Brian for the comment.
Thank you for making this informative video, much appreciated
Glad it was helpful!
Similar drain plug location on the FZJ80?
James, I would assume the FZJ80 also has the drain plug on the side. Even the 1HZ diesel engines had them
Great video. Will be doing this on my next day off
Josh, if your coolant is super dirty don’t try and do this in one day. Put some flush in it as soon as possible and drive it around a few days.
Do you have the part number for the two L shape heater hoses you talked about that went to the thermostat?
The hoses are 16264-61010. The clamps are 96135-51300
@@landcruisernut8654 amazing! great video!!
Nice work!
Thank you NPK garage.
Any idea why a radiator could leak while it’s running but not leaking while it’s off? My 80 started leaking yesterday during a warm up
Your radiator is leaking when the vehicle is running because the water pump is applying pressure to the cooling system
@@landcruisernut8654 That makes sense, thanks! I love this truck but man do these fixes add up...
Wow…is that an original Toyota radiator!? Looks to be in good shape :)
Yes, this is the original radiator. I keep it as clean as I can
Sure is!
Awesome. Thanks
Sounds like you need a valve adjustment
