  • Here I explain (with clips!) what I love about Lewis Allen's classic ghost story, The Uninvited.
By the way, sorry for the video, I forgot to fix some of the camera settings before recording and as you can see, the image is very overexposed.

I saw this movie on TV as a child. I’ve always loved it. Since then, I have seen it dozens of times. I always laugh when my brother in law repeats what Stella says in Spanish while she was in the trance. If you understand, you’ll be ahead of the game figuring out who the ghosts really are!

Definite favorites, The Haunting 1963 and The Uninvited 1944. I first saw The Haunting alone in our home by myself as a kid. It was getting dark out and raining which really set the mood. It totally scared the life out of me and I ended up going next door to my friends house till my parents came home. The Uninvited I first saw a few years ago and it has been one of my favorites ever since. Gail Russell was such a beauty. Her life turned out so tragic.....very sad.

I liked it. It has a little bit of everything. It isn't merely about ghosts. It is a comedy, it is a romance, it is a mystery. Good one.

The Uninvited is a great classic movie that gets major props just for its title.

Ray Millant at the top of his game just like the opposite movie with him as a plotter to have his wife murdered. Brillant there too not to forget his Columbo episode...

Horror movies, particularly supernatural movies, very clearly demonstrate the power of the film medium. If a movie has me believing in a ghost or the devil for two hours to the point of fear...well, that's powerful storytelling 😊

I first seen this about 26years ago and thought it was cool it is spooky with out all the hor and gore and for the 1940s the special effects are great.

    Favourite haunted house film?
Monster house, best one out their
Top notch animation, 10/10 voice acting, and an oddly heartfelt story by the end
Check it out! It’s available on Netflix I believe

I’ll go with The Legend of Hell House, The Amityville Horror, Session 9, and The Conjuring. I have a hard time calling this a horror movie. It comes across as a romance in the old traditional sense like Wuthering Heights and Crimson Peak.

I’ve been watching this movie first on Chicago’s WGN back in the 1960’s. It’s I still think the best ghost story ever put on film.
Everything works with the chemistry between great actors and screenplay along with the b&w use of shadows and soundtrack makes this film one of the best. I still get frightened watching alone at night! When Gail Russell was found dead from alcoholism she had called in the local radio station to play her favorite “Stella By Starlight”. A beautiful but still haunting song

I was very impressed with your analysis of "The Uninvited".Well Done! You did your homework on the film, and your knowledge and background on the other actors was well researched.I consider your critique on "The Uninvited' the best I have ever seen.I especially liked your approval of Gail Russell, since she is my favorite actress, and the subject of my biography,"Fallen Star".Keep up the good work.

I first caught The Uninvited during a screening on TCM, and I was instantly hooked, but disappointed to see that it wasn't on home media at the time. Luckily, only a year or two later, it was added to the Criterion Collection (and was the first film I got from that collection as well) and it's quickly become my favorite horror movie of all time.

Rose Red-good one. You really get a strong sense of the house as an evil entity. And I love that the house keeps growing new rooms.

it could be argued that Gail Russell's most famous role is opposite John Wayne in The Angel and the Badman
my list of horror favorites are all B&W - The Uninvited - The Haunting (1963) - and The Innocents - interestingly - the first had an english setting but filmed in hollywood - the second had an american (new england) setting but filmed in england - the last got it right (england based england filmed - but the source author was american henry james)

Great list! Those are also some of my all-time favorites, and I'll definitely have to check out The Angel and the Badman as well!
