Great movie. I love the contrast between Brando and Karl Malden. Perfect. The storm and ocean waves are incredibly artistic and dramatic. The 4K version is gorgeous.
Masterpiece and the ocean in the background is stark contrast to the desert canyons we associate with Westerns. Brandon, brooding, simmering, unpredictable.
There was a scene in One-Eyed Jacks when Brando is recovering from his injured hand that Longworth damaged. The studios were pissed at Brando because he kept waiting for the right ocean waves, which took days. They demanded he just shoot it but Brando was firm and waited. Finally, Brando went up and sat on some rocks. The camera looked down on him, the shore down below, and we see the ocean waves crossing across him to the score. That shot is in your review, and it’s the most beautiful and meaningful shot in the whole film. That’s great directing for you.
I just watched this film for the first time last week and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The plot was unpredictable and the performances were truly great. Pina Pellicer’s character really captured my heart in the film and Pina did an outstanding job in this role. Slim Pickens was also a favorite but all the actors/actresses were very good. Thanks for making this video, I look forward to watching more.
Thanks for your expert and in-depth analysis. Well said. It's a great film! A masterpiece. Amazing casting, script, direction. Powerful psychological battle, with lots going on under the surface. Totally underrated, but being rediscovered at last! Wish he'd directed more.
Brando is the greatest actor because of his unmatched acting range. From 1950-60 he played a paraplegic in THE MEN, Stanley Kowalski in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, a Mexican revolutionary in VIVA ZAPATA, Mark Anthony, a Hell's Angel in THE WILD ONE, Terry Malloy in ON THE WATERFRONT, Napoleon in DESIREE, sang and danced in GUYS AND DOLLS, a Japanese man in TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON, a contrite nazi in YOUNG LIONS then directed ONE EYED JACKS.
Hey, i watched it just last night. I think its because of that UA-cam automatically suggested this video of yours to me. I started watching the movie and planned to pause it to get to run some errands, but just couldn't. I found this movie to be one that just keeps you interested. Nice video yours too.
All three are my favourites after just watching Marlon Brando.JJ i watched when i was eally little and it captivated me until this very day.Robert Redford!
When I first saw the movie 🎥 in couple of months ago. It was technically color beautiful. Love ❤️ that movie 🎥 Marlon Brando was very brilliant handsome charming actor. He did it very well in directing the movie 🎥. Karl Malden was great to play Dad. I know Marlon and Karl was very close friends since the broadway 🎭
I read that Brando's first cut of the film was 4 hours long. Studio took it away and edited it to the final 2.5 hour version. Does Brando's 4 hour cut exist? I'd pay $50 to own it.
I just watched it ...it was pretty good I wonder how it would have turned out if Kubrick who was originally going to direct ...how it would have turned out
Ok thanks Saw it 1st time Last week.. Will see it many More times before I am no longer able Too. Do more reviews . You very concisely described the film but also broke into the characters .Yes its a shame we didn't get to see all of what Brando intended.. At the time an epic movie didnt really exists..no one really was expected to sit for 4 or 5 hours at a movie theater..even now people won't sit through a movie that long in a cinema..but will binge watch an entire series in one night..on their phone? What does that say about us?
Josh, you seem.like a nice kid, I've got a grandson about your Mother's age and a saddle even older. One-Eyed-Jacks was made to settle a card game. Best...
We are getting the same youtube recommendations apparently! I do like this movie even without knowing Gilliam does. I'm about to look into how many films Karl Malden and Brando did together. Maybe just this and "On the Waterfront" and "Streetcar" perhaps. Thanks! Dave J. (If you listen to Ron Pearlman talk about "The Island of Dr. Moreau" none of Brando's directorial quirks will be surprising).

Marlon Brando a true legend
Excellent work. The Criterion edition would've benefited from this well done inside look.

I watched it the other day for the first time in years - a great print on UA-cam.
And it is indeed a fantastic movie!
This is a good western. Worth checking out if you have never seen it. Among my all time favorites along with Josey Wales and Jeremiah Johnson.

How about “The Good The Bad and The Ugly” or “A Fistful of Dollars”?

Good review with good clips. One of my favorite movies.
Great movie! Thanks for the video
So glad I found you in my feed!
AMAZING MOVIE!!!!!
Good stuff, Joshua! Keep 'em coming!
A good revenge movie. Karl Malden plays a pretty mean guy, and really is a "One Eyed Jack."
Exactly, but Marlon has seen the other side of his face
@@johngorham Believe me I have known a lot of "One Eyed Jack's" in my life. Charming at one time, and evil in different circumstances.
Love this Move

It’s Terry Gilliam’s favourite film.
