  • Tears, screams... and an intro with death predictions! Welcome to our Part 1 reaction to this epic episode (epicsode?); we'd love to post our reaction to the entire episode since it was nonstop excitement all the way through, but we'll squeeze as much content as we can into a few videos. Didn't get as many deaths as we expected but each one was poignant, appropriate to each character's arc, and extremely satisfying once you wipe the tears off your face and take a deep breath. This fucking show!!!

*For the record, here's the outcome of our predictions:*
*The deaths of Brienne, Davos, Tormund, Grey Worm, Ghost, one of the dragons, and maybe Gendry, Missandei (suicide) and Varys (he would have been an ice spider!!!): WRONG
*The deaths of Theon, Jorah, Dolorous Edd, and Beric: RIGHT
*Mel showing up to help in some way: RIGHT
*Mel bringing an army of Lord of Light followers: WRONG
*The appearance of Undead No-Head Ned: SOOOO WRONG...boo :-(

Love her or hate her: Melisandre was friggin' useful. Nighty might have won if she didn't show up.

And yes, thank goodness Ghost is still alive! His death would have been crushing, and I would have had to wipe even more tears from my face.

Haha, yep...can't ever quite escape that whole killing-a-little-girl-in-the-hopes-of-it-leading-to-better-weather thing.

And yes I hated how bad the whole defense was!! They knew there were Giants, and a Dragon! Not to mention Winter!

They literally just threw away every Dothraki warrior! With all the planning/thought/preparation that went into this battle, it seems ridiculous to start by attacking the wights. They KNEW every person killed would just add to the Night King's army, and they basically just gave him a gift by throwing an entire nation of warriors at a mass of difficult-to-kill wights. With the exception of a few survivors, it looks like the Dothraki race/people have been reduced to women and children back in Essos. What a waste.

I am wondering what both of your predictions are for the Iron Throne? Any conspiracy theories you think will come to lite in the last 3 episodes?
    I have a few.

Thought you'd never ask. :-) I'll let him answer on his own, but here are a few of my thoughts (emphasis on "a few" since we could talk about this story all day; I'll just focus on some things that have been on my mind most recently):
*Before I get into anything else, I have to say that I think everyone flipping out with anger over the disappointing "end" of the Night King's storyline/threat isn't paying enough attention...there's no fucking way this is the absolute end of the Night King's story. The trope of good triumphing over evil in one fell swoop/stabbing is one that George RR Martin has repeatedly claimed to find uninteresting; it's way too simplistic a solution, and one of the things he dislikes about Lord of the Rings and Tolkein's narratives in general. He claims to prefer telling stories about the internal good/bad struggle/evolution we individually experience. So I have no doubt that we are still missing several pieces of the puzzle and that more will be revealed in the remaining episodes. (And on the off chance it turns out I'm wrong about this, I WILL be super disappointed, but I have to believe there's more coming.)
*In terms of the aftermath of the story, I'd be thrilled if Tyrion and Sansa end up staying married and enjoyed a platonic (yet loving), mutually respectful relationship, and, as a team, became leaders (NOT 'rulers', and there's a huge distinction) of Westeros, with the caveat that each region would be allowed independence and autonomy. Sansa is invested in the north's independence, and it would make sense if this perspective extended to everyone in the realm. Both Sansa and Tyrion have demonstrated the ability to lead in various ways, and I think their individual skills complement each other well and would prove to be a winning combination for strong, non-violent leadership.
*I think it's inevitable that Dany will have to make a huge sacrifice, one that will likely result in her death. I don't know if, as a lot of theories suggest, Jon will have to kill her, but we've seen that Dany is extremely throne-hungry and self-involved (despite her genuine attempts to be a strong but fair ruler of Meereen), seems to have sort of a perverse/narcissistic idea of what it means to "break the wheel," and is really (like so many past rulers of Westeros, including her father), more of a conquerer than a leader.
*This is probably a stretch, but I hope Arya is somehow involved in Cleganebowl, possibly wearing the Hound's face in a fight with the Mountain if the Hound (SANdor!!!) happens to die before/during the fight.. We saw two examples in the last episode (Lyanna/giant and Arya/Night King) of a small girl, someone who isn't "supposed" to be defined by bravery and a willingness to fight to the death, defeat a huge, imposing foe. I'm unsure of this theory because Arya already HAD this moment, but it would be so cool to see her defeat the Mountain. Whether this happens or not, I think we'll definitely see Arya wearing SOMEONE'S face at least one more time before the end.
*It would be lovely for Jaimie to die in Brienne's arms, calling back to his response to Bronn's question from several seasons ago about how he'd like to die: "In the arms of the woman I love." Of course he was thinking of Cersei at the time, but as one of our insightful subscribers, TheNorthRemembers, noted, "love" isn't really an appropriate word to describe their extremely complicated and fucked up relationship, with said fucked-upedness not confined solely to the incest. As TheNorthRemembers said, "They 'mistook' the terms of carnal love with that of sibling love in their young immature and fragile minds which later led to their obsession with each other." Jaimie has benefited from his distance from Cersei and developed the strength to look inward and grow emotionally. His bond with Brienne is represented by their swords; Widow's Wail and Oathkeeper are two parts of a whole, forged from Ned Stark's sword, Ice. Their arcs are intertwined, and we'll definitely see more of their connection before the story is concluded.
*I've seen tons of theories floating around about Bran either becoming the Night King or inheriting his powers in some way, and using his own army of the dead to defeat Cersei (it just sucks that she managed to escape that whole threat) since Dany's formerly-intimidating army has been all but decimated and they'll need a little something extra to have a chance against Euron, his loyal Ironborn, and the Golden Company's 20,000 soldiers. Also, on another note, I'd be shocked if Bran managed to survive (at least in his current physical form) all the way to the end. Keep in mind that, at least for the books, GRRM announced his intention (and I forget where I read this, but it was in some interview or blog post or something) to add a five-year time jump at the end of the story. We'll likely get to see how the new reality plays out once Cersei is defeated, the Night King storyline is wrapped up (for real this time), and all the survivors are left to pick up the pieces. And I think Sam will play a big part in the 'epilogue' or whatever you want to call it.
This is already way too long, so I'll stop here for now. What are some of your thoughts? Particularly interested in what you think will happen with Cersei/Jamie, how Cersei will die, whether Tyrion's "curse" actually plays out (the one about her joy turning to ashes in her mouth after she prematurely thinks she's finally safe and happy), etc. *Anyone else with thoughts on what's to come, please feel free to chime in! (Also, if you actually managed to read all the way through this eye-glazing wall of text, congratulations!)*
