Strange.. The night king only appeared when bran started warging... That guy is sus af, everyone died for him to get the throne. Isn't he the real night king?
@@TheFROMaholicFletcher Yeah, I think so as well. I hope we get Snow, and whatever they do at least indirectly addresses this. At least attempts to fix this.
Jorah and Lyana are the perfect embodiments of the famous words of their house. “Here we stand”. They stood until they could no longer, and then still stood just a bit longer.
the old bear and his sister would have been proud. house mormont's always been a smidge underrated, but boy do they deliver. it's really unfortunate that their lineage got wiped out in the show, hopefully they'll have surviving relatives in the last book. iirc maege's other 3 daughters are still alive?
my cackle faded away as soon as it hit me that bran did for a fact peace out mentally during the battle? i gotta ask because i genuinely don't know anymore. what exactly was bran doing all along? couldn't he have messed with the NK in any other way? bro's just a glorified, disabled bait right now. what went down in and out of that cave can't all have been for THIS 😭
I always figured he was warging into the past to make sure Anya would have the valyrian steel dagger . We've seen his ability to change the past so it'd affect the present. He was very purposeful in giving Arya the dagger, so I figure that's what happened somehow
@@fluffy_walrus Except it's pretty obvious he can't change the past. "The past is already written; the ink is dry." Everything Bran was going to do in the past was always going to happen, so nothing he does will change anything, as it was always going to be. He was always going to call out to his father at the Tower of Joy. He was always going to warg into Hodor and cause Hodor to become Hodor (otherwise Hodor would still have been Willis). Likewise Arya was always going to get that dagger. It wasn't a product of his green seeing, it was as simple as him just giving it to her and knowing what she would do with it.
@@bleyded - Wish they had filmed this episode by interspersing it with cut scenes of Bran having secret meetings with key characters and telling them where they needed to be and what they needed to do. For instance: telling John you need to be here at such and such moment and do this, and Arya you need to be at this place at such and such moment, etc. If they had utilized Bran and his abilities much better then they payoff of him being the 3-Eyed Raven would have been much more satisfying. Instead the audience got treated to 'I'm just gonna sit over here and watch' Bran.
The episode been dark what does that have to do with the whitewalkers been able to aura coming they did attack once before when it was dark that's why it's called the long night not the long day

She was worried about the wounded. And the rest of those who survived. That's an issue they needed to solve before going to another war . But I guess that made her the villain
Everything became so stupid after season 5 they destroyed everything did not introduce a lot of important characters that why they didn't know what to do in the end even with those they were left
The Dothraki cavalry charging head on in to utter darkness, is by far, the worst tactical maneuver ever put on display in the history of film and series.
There was also no reason for them to charge. What were they charging at? It was dark, they couldn't see and they didn't even know there's enemy there...
Tactics aside.. I loved it. That’s what they did and my heart stopped beating the entire time. The roller coaster of emotions is what made this episode for me no episode or movie gave me the emotions this did
Fun fact- the writers wanted Dany to just stand there while Jorah was protecting her, but it was Emilia’s idea to have Dany pick up the sword because she doesn’t believe Dany would act so helpless
No shade to Emilia, but it tells on how much the writers were shit when an actor just goes "yeah, that's stupid and here's something 100% more obvious and better".

That scene of Melisandre taking off her collar, that almost feels like she has been a slave to her Lord and her purpose for all of her years, you can feel the burden releasing the grip it had on her, finally breathing a sigh of relief, even if she did horrific things, she thought she was doing everything to save humanity from this horrible fate, and after seeing another day dawning in the distance, the sun about to shine on a grateful and saved world, she finally is at peace, free to let go. @@MMKOCH200 If Davos got his way earlier, humanity would be dead. Thoros, Beric and Malissadre made this outcome happen. All of them gave their lives to fight for the living to live. Spartan stupidity said Malissandre's necklace was her power. Thoros didn't wear a necklace. He said he has no power. His lord was his power. When Malissadre brought Jon back, nothing she did or said worked until she said please. She humbled herself realizing what Thoros already knew.
@@MMKOCH200 Let's be clear. I never said he didn't have justification for wanting her dead. So whatever you think you read isn't what I'm willing to debate. Cause and affect is what I'm talking about. Everything that happened was to get to where they got. Shirren's death and Stanis losing broke Malessandre's faith. Put her at the wall. Humbled her. So when she made her attempt to resurrected Jon, she came at it like Thoros. With no power. Remember her asking please? She asked for the lords favor like Thoros, and it was granted. I never even implied it was OK for her to sacrifice a child like other cultures have as ritualistic practice. The 7 Many Face God is the one true god. The 7 killed Ned which sent Aria to the Many Face God and was saved by R'hllor, the one true god to, kill the Knight King. They're the same god.
The Night King’s entrance music at the end is one of the best soundtracks of the entire series. The use of the piano is incredibly suspenseful and beautiful at the same time. Shoutout to Ramin Djawadi
Two things NEVER disappointed in the entire series ; the music and the visuals (even when they don't make much sense, I agree, but in the latter seasons, some shots genuinely look like oil paintings).
@Desithemidget I'm trying to think... didn't cry for Ned or Red wedding ... hmmm oh wait when stanis daughter was murdered. But Jorahs death as he took his last breaths in Daenerys' arms. I died 😢
Regardless of this season, Jorah’s death is one of the best. He died duing what most knights in Westeros yearn for. Fighting and protecting for a ruler they believe in, his Khalessi. Even better, he fought side-by-side with her to protect and for a cause greater than himself, saving humanity from a supernatural force, even fewer knights have been able to say they have done that.
So Bran was bait for the NK, ok... but what was the fucking plan?! You bait him into what exactly? Theon charging at him with a spear? They had no plan, there was nothing smart about the way they ended the NK, it was just stupid randomness. If Arya disappeared for the entire episode, to then appear with the face of a White Walker and stab the NK i wouldn've said: cool, unepxected, but it somehow makes sense, she is one of the faceless men, she somehow managed to get the face of a Walker. Or better, what if Arya took Bran's own face and layed there in his chair until the Night King reached Bran, then surprise-surprise, she swiftly gets up and stabs the fucker, then pulls down Bran's face to reveal it was her actually and that Bran sacrificed himself to give her his face... that would've still made little sense, because it wasn't freaking Arya the one who should've ended the NK, but at least it would've been original, unexpected, planned. No, they just chose to make her jump out of nowhere.
The glance by Brandon , the head tilt by night king , the hair moving as Arya blew by , to the patented switch of hands all combined with that insane musical score was INCREDIBLE!
Let's review the war strategies: we have trenches we have walls we have dragons. let's get our army outside the walls! Better yet, in front of the trenches!! Let's send them straight to the bloody enemy! Let's throw dragon fire only after the enemy is killing us!! Oh and we'll leave the weakest in the crypt. What could go wrong?
this episode was written to be emotional to please emotions not the brain.and it payed off. no other piece of entertainment had managed to pull something like this entire hour of suspense. id rather experience something new and different, than having a good stablished strategy for the battle, that wont bring anything new to the table.
@@AnkokuDragon How can you say that this episode had suspense when every time a character is about to be killed by 8 zombies they cut away, and the moment they cut back that character is perfectly fine. It happens like 24 times throughout the episode and after a while you just sort of mentally check out. As for this being something "new" and "different", it certainly was that. I've never before seen an episode that so expertly killed the themes of it's own show. Also you can't just write off good strategy as an "extra bonus" that doesn't matter. Even if we pretend that everything else in this episode wasn't equally as shit, GoT has always established itself as a show where smart strategic thinking is rewarded and poor planning and mistakes gets you killed. Until s8 this show had consequences. Remember that this plan was devised by Tyrion, Jon Snow, Jamie, and many other characters who could be listed as some of the smartest and most strategically minded people in westeros. To have THESE CHARACTERS devise THIS PLAN isn't a thing you can just shrug off. It damages their characters heavily. I get that you liked it but stop talking out of your ass. Go like it in your own time instead of arguing against something that is undeniably a flaw.
@@Fyrestar yeah cuz Jon Snow Surviving the battle of the bastards Made perfect sense as well... dont give me that BS saying until S8 the show had consequences when we even had Jon Snow resurrecting. Besides i dont see the Dohtraki following orders from others, again like i said before the episode was written to dample with emotions, them charging like that and dying in an instant brings the morale down. Also also i dont even understand the obsession for demanding a good strategy for the battle when it dosnt even matter... whatever the fuck they did, they were going to die and fail because their opponents can resurrect an grow in numbers as the battle goes, literally whats the point ?
I love how someone like Theon, who was paralyzed by fear for nearly the whole show, found the courage to charge the most intimidating person of all in the end
They didn't want to get closer to actual threats? The wights didn't care & were just a wave of bodies but the Walkers want to stay "alive" if that's what they are.
Theon is my absolute favorite character. His growth through 8 seasons is amazing. Such a well written character, you hate him in the beginning and bawl over his death. Awesome. I hope you noticed that when Jamie and Brienne were fighting back to back, their swords, made from Ned's sword Ice, were reunited once more to defend Winterfell.

Miguel Sapochnik, who directed this episode fought tooth and nail with D&D over the lack of deaths of main characters here. He wanted to kill Jorah in the initial charge along with the Dothraki to set the tone of "nobody is safe". He said he was up for killing everybody, but ultimately D&D wouldn't hear of it. Don't necessarily think everybody needed to die, but more deaths would definitely have been better as it would've shown how dangerous all of the prophecies about this war and the dead really are. Still feel the war with the Night King should've been the final 2 episodes too.
I mean it’s a bit annoying to only kill the ‘many extras we don’t know’. Like one handed Jaime lives over the Dothraki he feared so much and so many unsullied. And so many of the scenes it was just like them against tons of the walkers and it’s just not realistic. I wish Jaime died here… would’ve been far more honorable
Agreed. I severely overestimated the amount of deaths here. Sam should have died. Brienne and Jaime should have died fighting side by side. Tyrion should have died.
The way this ep unfolded almost everybody should've died. The plot armour was just borderline insulting. Why make us wait 8 seasons to hype up a threat to only kill one or two characters. Just insane writing. They saved deaths for Daenerys scorching Kingslanding which is even more insane she should've never been the final boss. it should've just been the Walkers.

Arya gave Sansa a dragonglass dagger, not the Valyrian steel one. She obviously saved that for herself. Lyanna being squished by the giant was the closest I've seen to tears on Spartan. Jorah's death had me sobbing. Emilia Clarke did a FANTASTIC job and Drogon coming in at the end, who had known Jorah literally his whole life, and curled up there with Dany. Flowing tears! R.I.P. to Jorah, Theon, Ed, Lyanna Mormont, Berric, Malissandre and thousands of Dothraki and brave unsullied who sacrificed themselves for the greater good.
I think everyone needs to remember that the view of this show when spanning over many many years will be different to people that are able to binge it in a shorter time. Yes, it went downhill but it’s still one of the greatest shows ever and really highlighted how tv series can be more epic than movies
The thing about this episode is that while there is absolutely wasted potential and imperfect writing, there is still brilliant production, amazing fight choreography, and some amazing scenes. It is also FAR better than the nonsense coming in the remaining series episodes. Also, from the beginning, I really thought it should have been Jon + Arya (and maybe + Bran) bringing down the Night King.
lol the people who watched S1-S4 over the years as it released didn't think those seasons were garbage. this whole "put into perspective the differences of binge watching vs watching back in the day" is actually a really poor apologist argument that I've seen gain traction for many shows that have declined in quality drastically. there were people who watched S8 when it released and loved it. S&P would have likely reacted the same if they watched back then as they are now binge watching.
Well if you remove season 8 sure it will be one of the greatest shows, not really worth watching if the ending sucks though. Also won't be that different, as on patreon they have already finished it and they are mad at the ending and how it went down XD It's like what David benioff and Dan themself said ironically in an interview, "A show is nothing without a good ending, even if you have a fantastic show, all of that means nothing if everything that leads up to it is a bad ending" Well they just ate their own words, literally XD But I agree for it's time before season 8 it was one of the greatest, even when I and probably others started notice a shift in quality from season 6-7 compared to the first 5 seasons, Season 6 and 7 are still up on top compared to other shows.
House Mormonts words "Here we Stand" Jorah said it to Viscerys when he tried to steal the dragon eggs in season 1 and we saw it w/ Lyanna charging the giant and Jorah again standing back up and taking more blows for Dany until the fight ended.
Friendly reminder that Daenerys picking up a sword & fighting was Emilia's idea. She understands the character more than the two dumbasses who were paid to write for her. she knew that Dany would never just stand by, watch her people die for her and do nothing. Charge the dothraki into death and darkness head-on as your first move... 10/10 strats big brain move For all the critiques; - The Dothraki are light cavalry, they have no armour, and therefore their purpose is to flank, retreat, flank etc. That charge was unjustified to the writers' incompetence. - The 'planned' scenario before Malisandra came out of nowhere was to charge the Dothraki into the skeletons with weapons that couldn't even neutralise them... this adds to how stupid the whole thing was, they were thrown in to die by the writers. - There was no kind of preparation to this battle, this is obvious. They had at least 2 days to dig fire ditches, to plant posts for visibility, to transform all blades into dragonglass blades, to set fire traps upon fire traps. @@Splickosyeah, that's the craziest part, where was the strategy here? I feel like with the manpower they had, a better plan would have been to entrap the wights in a forest on the road to winterfell that they would then set afire to kill quite a portion of them. Simultaneously, you'd enlist every able body in the winter town and it's surrounding to dig the largest moat the north has ever seen around winterfell, fill it with pitch and wood, and once everyone has retreated to winter fell, set it aflame and rain arrows and catapults on any wight still walking while Jon and Dany deal with Viserion. Or I guess you can just throw all your soldier at them in an open field I guess, what do I know...
That reminds me that Jorah used to be married. His wife was Lynesse Hightower, who spent all his money which is what drove him to resort to selling slaves. After Jorah was caught and exiled he and his wife moved to Lys as Jorah fought for the Golden Company. He didn't make a lot of money though, and his wife left him to be the concubine of a wealthy merchant. Ouch.

Just a little fact, the dagger that arya used to kill the nightking is called catspaw. That is the same dagger that viserys targaryen had in house of the dragon, the one that had imprinted aegon's prophecy about the prince that was promised.
The dagger is not called "Catspaw". It's sometimes known as the Catspaw Dagger, because it was the dagger used by the catspaw who attempted to assassinate Bran. A catspaw is someone who's been tricked into doing someone else's dirty work.
@@williamshelton4318 Regardless of your thoughts on the matter "the catspaw" is how that otherwise unnamed character is referred to within the ASoIaF community, and always has been. If you believe everyone else has been wrong all these years, that's your prerogative, but doesn't invalidate what I said.
I really agree with Spartan on the point of making more of Bran's storyline. In my opinion it would have been really awesome to see sort of a mental battle between the night king and Bran / Three Eyes Raven involving some of the visions about night walker origins or something, maybe through utilising Bran's warging ability to get into his mind. Presedence was already set with Hodor - so I really thought this was where it was going! As Spartan says this could be the distracting factor that makes Arya's kill more believable.
The Night King doesn't exist in the books, but I hope to see an astral plane battle between Bran and Euron, who is theorized to be the dangerous failed student of Bloodraven.
Or maybe Bran could've warged into Nymeria, who distracts the Night King by attacking him. He kills her, but that distraction is what leaves him open to Arya jumping in there.

I wonder what the effect of binging the show after it’s release does to someone’s perspective of the ending. Because if you watched it for years like some of us, to watch the show become so well known and cover every inch of pop culture entertainment, for its main villain and conflict to end like this… is so incredibly disappointing and frustrating. “Winter is coming” was said for years, well it came and lasted one episode.
@@whateverdoesntmatter9868tbh, it's not unnatural for them to hang on to the things they like about the show until the very end of the show and only turn on it in hindsight then. My main disappointment in this episode was Bran. The writers could've done so much with the type of power he had. He could've had a much more significant role than just the bait. I was thinking about this while Spartan was nit-picking, and I came up with an idea. (Granted I didn't think of this when it originally aired.) But, Bran could have attacked the whites with his dire wolves just before Aria attacked at a slight distraction to help her out a bit. That would have made some sense.

Perfect first reaction! Exactly what I was hoping for! I first watched your reaction and the read some of the comments. That is why I love your reactions sooo much! I was so emotional the first time I watched season 8, that I did not know how to react. All the logical thinking went out the window 😂 only after the emotions wore off a bit and rewatched some parts I saw all the countless plot holes. Still, I can absolutely relate to your first ever reactions and people in the comments seems to expect you to just smile and point out all the stuff that are not ok. But then they forget we had like years to have these episodes processed and dissected. I don't know about everyone else, but I felt exactly the same like you did the FIRST time I watched it. I was emotional, I could not breath and I did not think about war tactics. All this came later. You are perfect, guys! ❤
I am in 100% agreement with you. The 1st time I watched this episode, it was too emotional for me to be able to process anything else except the atrocious lightning 🙄 lol.
I didn't like not being able to see anything for 90% of the battle, 99% characters surviving being literally swarmed by undead (we see them being almost ripped apart and almost dying) just because they needed to and had plot armour. And then super human Arya ending the biggest threat of the world by doing super jump at Night King and tricking him with dropping dagger?? He literally could have strangled her in 1 second, but D&D just wanted that army of the dead nuisance fast out the picture. So they could focus on more important stuff like ending this show quickly, and then they could get to work on their Star Wars project (and they didn't even got it in the end 🤣). It's just too bad it had to end this way...

for that chaos of a battle ofcurse it's not enough...the fact that sam, podrick and a one handed jamie survived that being attacked by multiple enemys at once for so long is ridiculous and no saginifcant character died in the crypts is just plot armor at its best.
Yes, they are both important to the story, but they are still just side characters, not main characters. Besides, their loss was not too painful because their story was told. That was completely different with Ned's or Oberyn's death, for example.
I enjoyed season 7 and 8 and accepted them for what they were. The writing was very different and extremely disappointing in a few of the storylines. I sometimes get the feeling that they actively try to love it just so that they can love it. Spartan or Pudgey will point out the largest plot hole, weak storytelling, or wasted potential and then follow it up with "this episode was fantastic". Also, I completely disagree that "any way the White Walkers are defeated would be unfulfilling". Spartan is lying when he said he didn't want Jon to 1v1 the Night King and win. That would have been epic. That was clearly where the story was going. They even bring up all of the stare offs and close calls between the Night King and Jon. It is a pretty clear attempt to "subvert expectations" to have Arya gain the ability to fly just so that she can kill the Night King while Jon... has a staring contest with a dragon... The thing about subverting expectations is that it can easily be done poorly, such as in this episode.
That's one of the pitfalls of binge-watching a show with hardly any breaks between episodes. You get caught up in all of it without having the benefit of time to stand back and really digest what happened in an episode before you're on to the next one.
😂 Somebody told me recently in the comments that that's because their channel grew a lot bcs of this series so they have "special considerations" let's say with GOT. That's the better explanation I can find 😅.
to be honest its just as simpme as fresh off watching this episode it was an absolutely beautiful spectacle. after some digestion time we were both able to see how much missed potential there was in the way it ended and how many plot holes were left unanswered. that's often the benefit of hindsight and for many having years to dogest. we are just giving our fresh and live feelings as we go.

I felt a bit like you two did after I first saw the episode; kind of emotionally exhausted and a bit lost for words. Then I thought about it a bit later and realises how disappointed I was, especially with the arya bit. Such an unearned kill of the night king. It should have been Jon or Bran that killed him, not someone who'd never seen him before and didn't know anything about him. It was also a huge missed opportunity, in terms of explaining what the meaning behind the white walker symbols was and why the night king wanted to rule. GOT could never recover from this, as far as I was concerned.
Literally the build up of all the cryptic symbols and their desire to take over - then for it to just end leaving the night king as this one-dimensional villain. And don’t get me started on the emphasis on Bran’s powers, for them to literally serve zero purpose as well 😅
I know this episode is utterly shit and disappointing in so many ways. So many things left unanswered it just goes to show they were doing it for the visual wow factor as opposed to keeping it true to character story lines and build ups over the past seasons. I really really hate the choices of this season. There were so many other possibilities they could have gone with.
8 years. 8 years of build up and hype for this battle. Winter was coming. And the army of the dead goes out with a whimper. The most anticlimactic crap and an insult to fans. There should have been at least 5 main character deaths... actual stakes and repercussions for the biggest threat in the entire series. Oh well.
37:40 *_"And so Arya kills the Night King._* _Arya. Who has had no meaningful story connection with the fight against the White Walkers. She was the last member of House Stark to return to Winterfell and the least involved in the preparations to fight. This comes perhaps a little bit out of left field. The showrunners later stated that they chose Arya to kill the Night King specifically to subvert expectations. Meaning that they set up seven and a half seasons of other people being more involved with this plot and Arya not being very involved with this plot only to throw it away for a “fooled you!” While I’m sure it was satisfying to the writers, it’s not very much fun for a viewer. Someone else solved it!’_*_ is not a good return."_ _"Plus, while _*_“wow, wouldn’t have picked that!”_*_ is the end result, it’s not the _*_“I wouldn’t have picked that!”_*_ which comes from creative use of foreshadowing and careful structural and thematic development so that everything falls into place in an unexpected yet logical way. Deleted scene: The battle is lost, Jaime and Brienne barely escape in the high tower. Facing certain death, they go for a shag but Arya suddenly enters and stands there, watching, dagger in hand. Jaime pushes her out the window as the Night King is walking by. The scene was left out because the lighting wasn't good.

Hilarious how Jons last attempt at taking out Viserion was to scream at him, he thought he was going to die regardless, so he decided to scream, not attack, just scream lol.
It would have been more epic for him if he picked up burning debry, threw them in one direction while in cover and move in the other direction, slide under the beast in its moment of distraction and slash it's neck from beneath.

Imagine setting up the Jon Snow vs Night King duel and prince that was promised of ice and fire for 8 seasons then making the writing decision for Arya to kill the night king. Awful, just awful
They had to change all the scripts because people online already figured out the ending. They made every decision on shock value and through the story out the door.
what makes the dothraki scene even worse is that melisandre showed up at literally the last minute without anyone knowing. so the plan was to send them charging with just regular weapons, no flame, which we’ve been shown time and time again will not stop a single wight. so yea the plan was to lose thousands of soldiers while literally not killing 1 enemy. thanks d&d!

At "Theon, you´re a good man. Thank you" i cried like i never had in my life. People hate the last season, but Theon's storyline is one of the best storylines in the series from start to finish. The final satisfaction that came after all his hardships with this thanks is brilliant. I cried tears like peas.
Naa... just sending the cavalry in first... being outside the castle walls rather than behind them... ceasing to use catapults after that first salvo... not having more than one trench for fire (or only a thin trench)... landing and staying on the ground with the dragons so they lose all the benefit of being, ya know, dragons... putting the women and children in a place surrounded by the dead... oh... I guess you're right. Opposite Day it is. 🥲
There is an endless army of bodies. The goal isn't to magically win the battle. It's to keep Bran alive until the Night King can be drawn out. Keeping the waves of attack varied & spaced out is just buying time vs trying to win.
Even though this season is rightfully criticized enough already, I don't think enough people truly understand just how much this episode fucks the entire show. The white walkers have been built up since literally the very first scene of the show. They are the big threat. They are the final problem. Or at least... They should have been. For 7 seasons, the core message of game of thrones has always been that we should put aside our petty differences and squables, because when faced with death, none of it actually matters. Even ignoring the fact that Jon and Bran got to do absolutely nothing in this episode when this should have been the climax of their stories. Even ignoring the fact that Arya was the one to kill the night king despite only hearing about him 1 episode ago. Even ignoring the fact that they never explained things like why the night king wanted Bran, or what the meaning of the symbols were, or what the night king even was or wanted... Even ignoring all that, this episode still commits the biggest sin you can commit in a show, which is to completely backtrack on 7 seasons worth of storytelling. Forget the core themes and the storylines of numerous characters because the night king in the end meant nothing! The long night lasted 50 minutes! Winter came and nobody even died! Cersei is the final boss of the show now! Even ignoring all of the sheer incompetence that went into the writing of this episode to begin with, The Long Light would still be one of the most shameful and damaging things ever put on television purely for the fact that it wasn't the final battle of the show. It's not just wasted potential... It's a waste of 7 seasons of build up.
@@AP-RSI literally. What did bro even want him for? The answer is that the writers needed a reason for him to enter winterfell so that he could be killed (even tho if his goal was just to kill Bran, he could have just flown the dragon in and instakilled him with dragonfire).

Theon was the best-written character in the whole story and Alfie Allen was the best actor too. Like so many characters ended the series as different people than they began but none of their arcs were as coherent as Theon's. It's like Theon was a fully realized character and every motivation from the first episode to the last came from the same core person. Arya, Bran, Jamie...they all had such sharp turns that made them feel unrecognizable. Even more subtle changes like the one's in the Hound and Sam felt less fleshed out and too indulgent. Theon's was so nuanced and organic and relatable and it made him such a tragic hero of the story. Alfie should have won every Emmy for his performance. And I think his death was a good death--a true redemption--but part of me did want to see his and Sansa's story play out a little more. I'm glad they gave us a glimpse of that potential even if it never manifested.
I think you are nit picking because you are basically in shock that after all the horrors they have done it was a young girl who managed to kill them her father would be so proud i have watched this a dozen times and it still thrills me what she did and the admiration in Brans eyes for his warrior sister just fucking epic xx

Watching you guys enjoy this episode actually gives me a newfound appreciation for it. I think binging it gave you guys a different perspective. Having a decade of watching the seasons of the show, and having read the books multiple times during that span, I had extremely lofty expectations that were always going to be impossible to be met on screen. While I still have some issues, there's a whole lot to appreciate as well. Cheers!
Arya killing the Night King was epic, but the show really missed the mark here when it comes to the prophecy of the “prince or princess that was promised”. It was supposed to be a Targaryen, so either Jon or Dany. That didn’t end up going anywhere left GOT fans frustrated.
Even in HOTD if you’d watch it back, Viserys has the exact same dagger Arya used to kill the Night King. Then Viserys talks about the prophecy about a Targaryen (so what happened in GOT) & it really doesn’t make sense why Arya killed him, even though they tried to “foreshadow” a bit to make it makes sense with the Red woman. Neither does why HOTD still pushes this narrative. Hopefully HOTD somehow explains it.
You're right and wrong "The prince or princess that was promised" never meant one of them had to kill the Knight king it was never about that I think it meant that one of them was suppose to end up on the Throne in the End and Niether of that happened because the writers changed the show lmao
@@Bon-Gi True but to be fair I think Aryia killing him was foreshadowed way before they start foreshadowing John or associating John with him and it's easy to forget that because Ariya killing him was only foreshadowed once while John foreshadowing was done a lot more after if that makes sense
I always thought they missed a huge opportunity here. Arya should have had nothing to do with the Night King...she had never ONCE been involved in the White Walker storyline and having her kill the Night King is ridiculous, even with the retconned prophecy they try to justify it with. Arya has ALWAYS been after Cersei and should have been given something to do in that plot. If Jaime had died in the battle, she could have taken his face and used it to get close to Cersei after the battle (they could have even left Jaime's death ambiguous so they have a "big reveal" moment where we assumed it was actually Jaime going back like he did in the show).

@@noneofyourbeeswax01 Yes. The sad, pathetically stupid ending to an epically awesome series matters (to the extent a TV show ever matters). It kills the rewatchability of the series, kills the feeling that this was one of the great shows of all time. It all ends up in a moronic, anti-climatic ending that abandons every hint of foreshadowing, betrays every subplot and character, and smothers one's memory of GoT overall. Not just this (boring, stupid, dingy) ending to the "Ice" aspect of the song of fire and ice. But the remaining episodes as well. Hot garbage from this point to the end. This show wasn't great because of the visuals (although those were top-notch). It wasn't great because of the acting (also very good throughout). It was great because of the writing! Guys , all day at work I had Podrick singing Jenny of Old Stones in my head with this feeling of sadness and loss because episode two made us say goodbye to all our beloved carachters (I loved ep 2) . The anxiety grew and grew going home with only GOT in my head . I couldn't believe and I was feeling a bit ashamed that I was feeling that way for fictional people.... at home with my husband watching it I didn't have to contain myself and I swear I was shaking with anxiety and my stomach was like a stone , couldn't eat or drink . Then I just started literally sobbing, much louder for Theon and Jorah with the help of Sir Djawadi's music. I was more than a wreck , so Pudgey you are not alone and , Spartan , I saw a little tear in your right eye , u were fast to dry it but I saw it!
The fact the northerners put the foreign armies outside whilst they stayed behind their walls. Then the northerners had the nerve to act arrogant later when they had fled whilst the Unsullied protected them. People like Sansa and Arya. The Starks were so unlikeable later.

@@fluffy_walrus Except it's pretty obvious he can't change the past. "The past is already written; the ink is dry." If Arya disappeared for the entire episode, to then appear with the face of a White Walker and stab the NK i wouldn've said: cool, unepxected, but it somehow makes sense, she is one of the faceless men, she somehow managed to get the face of a Walker. You don't understand that the strategy was to bide time as the only way to win was to kill the NK.
yeah, they know anybody who dies goes to army of the dead. Who in their right mind would decide to attack them head on?
this episode was written to be emotional to please emotions not the brain.and it payed off. no other piece of entertainment had managed to pull something like this entire hour of suspense. id rather experience something new and different, than having a good stablished strategy for the battle, that wont bring anything new to the table.
@@AnkokuDragon How can you say that this episode had suspense when every time a character is about to be killed by 8 zombies they cut away, and the moment they cut back that character is perfectly fine.
Arya gave Sansa a dragonglass dagger, not the Valyrian steel one. She obviously saved that for herself. Lyanna being squished by the giant was the closest I've seen to tears on Spartan.
@@StevenSendak i was fine with Arya doing it. It was a good arc. I only wish they showed more training with her and the many faced god.
Well it went downhill about halfway thru the show. But yes, those first 4 seasons are absolutely top notch television.
lol the people who watched S1-S4 over the years as it released didn't think those seasons were garbage.
this whole "put into perspective the differences of binge watching vs watching back in the day" is actually a really poor apologist argument that I've seen gain traction for many shows that have declined in quality drastically.
there were people who watched S8 when it released and loved it. S&P would have likely reacted the same if they watched back then as they are now binge watching.
Well if you remove season 8 sure it will be one of the greatest shows, not really worth watching if the ending sucks though. Also won't be that different, as on patreon they have already finished it and they are mad at the ending and how it went down XD
It's like what David benioff and Dan themself said ironically in an interview, "A show is nothing without a good ending, even if you have a fantastic show, all of that means nothing if everything that leads up to it is a bad ending"
Well they just ate their own words, literally XD
But I agree for it's time before season 8 it was one of the greatest, even when I and probably others started notice a shift in quality from season 6-7 compared to the first 5 seasons, Season 6 and 7 are still up on top compared to other shows.

10/10 strats big brain move
For all the critiques;
- The Dothraki are light cavalry, they have no armour, and therefore their purpose is to flank, retreat, flank etc.
But nah, all we got was *Muh Kween* , *don't have balls lololol* , *let's fuck* , *i got beef with blondie, blondie got beef with me*

Rip Jorah. He died as he lived: In the friendzone!
Ouch.
Never trust a Hightower
@@bradcarver8127 I was wondering if there were ever any good Hightowers, I had to look it up.
The Mad King's Lord Commander of the Kingsguard was a Hightower. When Aegon Targaryen came to conquer Oldtown, they welcomed him and kneeled immediately to protect their people. And the ancient Hightowers were pro-education and helped to create the Citadel.
Just a little fact, the dagger that arya used to kill the nightking is called catspaw. That is the same dagger that viserys targaryen had in house of the dragon, the one that had imprinted aegon's prophecy about the prince that was promised.
And Bran handed that dagger to Arya right there under the Weirwood tree, the exact spot where the night king was killed
The dagger is not called "Catspaw". It's sometimes known as the Catspaw Dagger, because it was the dagger used by the catspaw who attempted to assassinate Bran.

It is clear that visually it was a 10, but as a script it was one of the worst episodes and it will not improve until we have The Winds of Winter
Bran proved to be one of the most pointless characters in the whole show. They butchered him as a character in the final two seasons.
I have no idea what bran does in this episode but I'd like to think he warged to the beginning to ensure the dagger gets put into their storyline

Because if you watched it for years like some of us, to watch the show become so well known and cover every inch of pop culture entertainment, for its main villain and conflict to end like this… is so incredibly disappointing and frustrating. “Winter is coming” was said for years, well it came and lasted one episode.

And don’t get me started on the emphasis on Bran’s powers, for them to literally serve zero purpose as well 😅
Same, once the shock passes, the many cracks became very evident.
I know this episode is utterly shit and disappointing in so many ways. So many things left unanswered it just goes to show they were doing it for the visual wow factor as opposed to keeping it true to character story lines and build ups over the past seasons.

She was the last member of House Stark to return to Winterfell and the least involved in the preparations to fight. This comes perhaps a little bit out of left field. Meaning that they set up seven and a half seasons of other people being more involved with this plot and Arya not being very involved with this plot only to throw it away for a “fooled you!” While I’m sure it was satisfying to the writers, it’s not very much fun for a viewer. At "Theon, you´re a good man. Thank you" i cried like i never had in my life. People hate the last season, but Theon's storyline is one of the best storylines in the series from start to finish. The final satisfaction that came after all his hardships with this thanks is brilliant. I cried tears like peas.
The plan for defending Winterfell "It's Opposite Day! Do everything that is completely illogical!"
Naa... just sending the cavalry in first... being outside the castle walls rather than behind them... ceasing to use catapults after that first salvo... not having more than one trench for fire (or only a thin trench)... landing and staying on the ground with the dragons so they lose all the benefit of being, ya know, dragons... putting the women and children in a place surrounded by the dead...
Ok, Bran was the 3-eyed raven, so the Night King wanted him. But why exactly, that was not explained.
But I agree with you completely!
@@AP-RSI literally. What did bro even want him for? The answer is that the writers needed a reason for him to enter winterfell so that he could be killed (even tho if his goal was just to kill Bran, he could have just flown the dragon in and instakilled him with dragonfire).
@@Fyrestar The storyline at the end of season 7 and all of season 8 was just lousy.
@@AP-RSI they 100% could have saved it as well, but 8x3 was the point of no return.
@@AP-RSI It was explained in S8E2, Bran is the embodiment of memory and the NK wanted total darkness.
Sansa badmouthing Daenerys while the latter was fighting to save Winterfell
sansa is the most overrated, power hungry character in the show. she only cares about her rank and sacrifced half of the northenrs fighting in the battle of the bastards just so she could be the savior of the battle.
@@RedDead_Dave Totally agree. And she risked Jon's life twice in the show...
I wish Sansa was killed by Joffrey lol
@@RedDead_DaveYou do remember her arguing with Jon they didnt have enough men. Her sending a raven to Littlefinger with no guarantee he would show up and not hand her back to Ramsey. She had Brienne threaten LF. LF never forgives slights. He brought the army when he wanted to bring them.
Jon running to save Rickon instead of sending anyone else caused his army to forget their tactics.
@@stacywhisenant6242she didnt even tell john we might have the eyries army. You dont think she could have said..."jon wait a bit we might have the eyrie on our side" she is the one who already gave up on ricon before the battle even started. Probably happy cause she thought she was the only stark left at that point. She is beyond saving the actions she did
Theon told John before he went and saved his sister that he always wanted to be a good person. He just didn’t always know what was always right.
Lyn your putting aside all logic for this. Nitpicking is an entirely different thing.
Theon should have had a bow with dragonglass arrows. He was always good with the bow, not so with sword and spear.
If the dragon fire didn't kill the NK, it's probable that dragonglass wouldn't have either. They didn't know that, of course, but just saying.
@@Calinn86surely Sam told them dragonglass kills white walkers
True, he can use his arms
@@araceli2827 Reminds me of one of my early English lessons: "Beowulf didn´t fight with arms, he only fought with his arms.
Daenerys: "Dracarys"
Night King: WTF Am I a joke to you? Who do you think I am, Dickon Tarly?
@22:30 : they are both Oathkeepers, and each of them is wielding half of Ice, the Stark ancestral sword. It is a thing of beauty that Ned’s blade is back in Winterfell to fight the biggest battle the North has ever seen.

what an absolute pleasure it has been to watch this series again with you two! cant believe were on the home stretch here
Watching you guys enjoy this episode actually gives me a newfound appreciation for it.
Arya killing the Night King would be like Hermione killing Voldemort. Just made no damn sense.
You're right and wrong "The prince or princess that was promised" never meant one of them had to kill the Knight king it was never about that I think it meant that one of them was suppose to end up on the Throne in the End and Niether of that happened because the writers changed the show lmao
@@Blank_e2v they foreshadowed Jon fighting the Night King for multiple seasons and then did absolutely nothing with it. So disappointing.
@@Bon-Gi True but to be fair I think Aryia killing him was foreshadowed way before they start foreshadowing John or associating John with him and it's easy to forget that because Ariya killing him was only foreshadowed once while John foreshadowing was done a lot more after if that makes sense
Watching a Spartan and Pudgy reaction b4 bed, one hell of a way to end a day.
37:02 Do I detect tears coming out of Spartan?!
So arya fucked brienne?
WHY DONT U make your own movie or just dont watch shows…just read books then…. These people…
You two had a much different reaction to this episode than I did. 😂
Atmosphere is intense, emotions are high, can't see shit. It's different in the moment.
@@BhBc8f8that’s what I was gonna say. When I first watched it I liked it a lot. About a couple of days later and a lot of thinking I changed my opinion a log
I had similar reaction as they did, and then I started thinking about it and I was like wtf was that?
@@reekaren2609 So what's the problem? If you like what you saw, does it really matter what you feel years or days later?
And that died a horrible, humiliating death in season 8.
This show was 10 years of my life!! Loved every moment. Hence why I come to watch through the eyes of others. Possibly I’ve watched the whole lot at least 7 or 8 times. Still you learn something. Was a journey of emotional rollercoaster.
Let's remember that in this episode Daenerys saved Jon's life for the second and third time

Spartan crying from @24:25 haha. First time I've seen you almost tear up man. This is why I love this channel. Spartan and Pudgey one of the best reactors on this platform.
Problem with Arya killing the night king is the following: What is the point of the prophecy of the prince that is promised. Either Daenerys or John should have been the one to kill him.
