Finding A MAJOR ISSUE Sealing Up A 1982 Corvette 700R4 Transmission. How To Seal It Up The RIGHT WAY
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- This is one of those videos where it does NOT go according to plan. The idea was to make a video showing how to seal up a GM TH350, TH400, or 700R4 the easy way, and how to get rid of all the pesky leaks. Of course, the transmission has other ideas. Watch all the way to the end to see what happens!

Thanks to Derek, I can't look at those tires and not say "Cooper Caub-ras!" out loud
Well I'll be dipped
Moses' sandals!
It's the way it goes , a 2 hr. job takes all day , be a mechanic they said , it'll be fun they said !!
It's great to see you back again doing Corvette videos. Always great content and I am always learning something new. Thank you
Well... That escalated quickly... I am glad you took your time, covered all the bases and will get the customer a leak free C3!
Well, that went as things usually go for me. It is always some oddball issue I've never seen before causing the problems.
Love that seal puller!
Dude. I have a 1984 z28 and your video helped me. I knew it was the pump seal but never replaced one.
You should glue the gasket to the pan instead of using silicone, the silicone will allow the gasket to push out unless you allow the silicone to completely dry before tightening it all the way.
Oh no, you hassled with that selector shaft seal, and then had to pull the whole trans? I hate when stuff like that happens - it's spittle in the face of efficiency...
And congrats on the new shop! Love that floor!
Selector shaft seal repair went perfectly! Just found the trans was really leaking from the front pump, which I’ve never see
@@TheCorvetteBen I have an 82 Corvette that needs several maintenance items including a leaky transmission but no one seems to want to work on it. Can you work on my car or recommend someone in the Fort Worth area to help me?
Masterful Magician of Mantricians! An early Xmas present, thanks and Kudos as usual.
The owner is lucky to have you. You are brilliant.
Appreciate the first part in the video because I sure learned from it :)
Props for actually pulling the trans still even after everything you already did!
Nice vid Ben, dealing with mine now. Mine (74) has a 400, just had to replaced the pan gasket, because my trans stopped shifting, ended up being the filter pickup tube was loose and just sucking air, no fluid getting to the case. after everything back together, like I always do left a puddle in the garage the next day. No leaks the day before weird. so when it gets warm again, I can pull it out and see where its leaking.
BTW, another trick to those pans what I used to do when I worked for GM, was to get a ball-peen hammer, and with the ball of the hammer, hammer in gently the bolts holes in the pan, they warp sometimes and look like a cone.
Yay! A C3 video!
Wow sneaky transmission 😮
Yes , I would agree with you, I have been doing it that way for years as a auto mechanic !!
Always good stuff - thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your videos. Im currently working on an ’82 CE myself; second owner 87k miles, mostly garage kept (not rat proof) last registered in 1987. I’d love to see/find a ground up resto video of one to get some knowledge on all of the other systems I’m having trouble with. Keep up the good work, its appreciated.
AAMCO master technician here. You should NEVER use silicone on 700 pan gaskets. There's a small hole in the case right below the servo cover. The gasket has a notch cut in it to go around that hole. That hole is the exhaust for the fluid in the servo. When the 700 shifts into 2nd gear, the band applies. When it shifts into 3rd, the band releases, and that fluid drains through that tiny hole. If the fluid doesn't drain, the band will be half applied, and glazing or burning its self up. I've seen it many times where the use of silicone plugs that hole.... Go to your GM dealer, get the right gasket, it will be a black paper one like the original, use weather strip adhesive if you think it needs glued, and torque to 140 inch pounds. Problem solved.
Absolutly correct. And also on all the 1st Gen 700s they were notorious for blowing the front pump seal out. I had this happen 2 times on a new 1984 Z-28 will less than 30k miles. 3rd repair they updated the seal to a new locking type seal and never had another issue. Sold it with 120,000 still working fine.
All good Ben. Man, I get it, sometimes the unexpected happens.
You caught it, replaced the other leaks. I would like to see a follow up with the trans back in the car and running post repair.
Cheers.
Just a heads up. I came across a Mahle cork and rubber composite Trans. Pan gasket for my 79 Vette that I was having leak issues with. What makes this gasket different, it has a thin metal insert that runs inside the entire gasket. So it sets flat with no bends and doesn’t squeeze out when torquing. Also used an aluminum Trans. Pan along with Permatex Optimum Max Rtv. Working great so far after trying a lot of different gaskets and Rtv’s that didn’t work. If anyone out there is having leaking problems with the steel or chrome Trans. Pans on a C3, try the aluminum!!! You’ll pay more, but worth it!
Great info for all those wondering why their transmission leaks.
My best friend mother had one of theses special edition,I believe they were going for more women buyers because of the end of the C-3 and the Champagne 🥂 Colors
Fantastic video, a lot of excellent content. Actually the broken seal is a gift in disguise, numerous people will learn from it, I have.
It’s been awhile..liking the new intro
You have great talent and have a wonderful temperament to work on these aging cars where all the seals eventually fail. Thanks for your videos and for those that love these old cars...I had a L82 1980 Corvette auto with this bodystyle, if you live near Ben and have a job that is a bit too over your head, by the thoughtfulness of your videos, I know I would take my Corvette to you and I worked at Chevy Engineering where these cars were designed.
Awesome video. Very informative.
Thank you for the videos again we appreciate you finally coming back out we know personal life and personal journeys in life takes you away from doing things but we appreciate you coming back now I can watch and see what I need to do to my 87 Corvette I'm getting it from my son-in-law's brother his dad gave it to him but he don't know what to do it needs help but I'll be the one to help it just taking me a long time to convince him but he's right there to do it now but now thank you for coming back on and I can learn more and more as I go welcome back lol I know you ain't been gone but thank you keep rambling on
Is your Texas State flag hung properly? Isn't the White area supposed to be on the top, with the red on the bottom?
Why couldn't GM make a cast oil pan? Geez...
Beautiful car.
Thank you for the Corvette content!
Keep ‘em coming!
Great Video Thank You.
Hope your wife is not missing her favourite towels Ben 😂, but are great for oily messes and yeah oil leaks are a pain in the pan and the 4 other places you mentioned, good to see you back 👍🏻.
Ben..you are a prime example of a person having a dream.. a passion..and through hard work..study..and sweat blood and tears see their dreams come true..and having a being a great guy with a honest approach is the only way to be..
Thanks for this video. Can you pls inform what is the tool part number that gets the selector gasket out and then fits the new one back in?
The moment you mentioned Facebook, you opened a whole new can of worms. Left Facebook YEARS ago and never looked back. Thanks for the video regarding the Corvette just the same. Horrible the way that shop mangled the pan and gasket. These were professionals that did this?
Lots of great info. Thanks.
I had a 71 Buick, I replaced the transmission pan gasket four times, kept leaking... The fourth time I just laid under the car. Finally ran my fingers up by the accumulator cover, it was wet. The o-ring was so old it had four sides! Repaired for less the a $1... No more leaks!!
Beautiful! This is Ben at his best!
Great Seeing You Back At The Corvette Videos Again, That Is A Beautiful ‘82 Collectors Edition Corvette You’re Working On Sir, Always Informative, Can’t Wait To See What’s Next..
Shops just do the bare minimum. No work ethic’s like in previous generations. 😢 That’s why I do my own work on my 1970 Z/28 Camaro. 😊 Also another reason why I only drive manual transmissions. 😂
Thanks Ben I appreciate your content
Any idea why it was so brittle on the bottom ?
I rebuilt my 350 and the pan did leak so I got an aluminum pan and felpro gasket. It was also leaking at the speedo. Changed it several times and realized the plastic gear had ridges than ruined the o ring so I made it smooth. It still leaks a little.
So, the aluminium pan worked out better than a steel one? Did you use a rubber Felpro gasket? Did this definitively fix the pan leak? Thanks
Did you film replacing the speedometer cable gear and gasket?
Another great video. Looking forward to many more.
Any advice on getting to that Speedo cable/ housing with the car NOT on a lift? I can't seem to get my hand around the exhause/tail shaft support to get to the bolt and housing...
Typical Corvette repair shops; :A Corvette CORRECTLY repaired is a customer lost"! Bahaha
You are absolutely correct, all my years with turbo 350 and 400's , I learned those were 90% of the leaks, it took me along time to figure that out!
I super needed this video! I'll take another crack at finding those leaks again. Thank you!!!
Great video Ben! I’m so impressed with your knowledge.
Great video & video. I keep it super clean as well. Take your time, clean everything and it will work fine.
Thanks for another C3 video!
Hey Ben, I was thinking of getting a 700R4 for my 79 C3. Is the fourth gear overdrive ?? I would like to be revving at about 2500 going 70 if that is possible. Is it wise for me to convert to the 700 trans ?? Please enlighten me with your Grand Corvette Wizardry Knowledge. And BTW, great video and your new shop is awesome. Many Thanks Jimmy
Hahaha 😅, your sure right about no room to work, 😅 My 81 has and comes up with so many of the issues I've watched you work on. Hahaha, 😅 I also have a heater motor I have to replace. I've watched your video on that, thanks. Gives me hope and courage 😂
That sucks it wasn't theothers leaking but satisfying to get the leak fixed
Well they all were leaking, this was just the biggest of them all
Have you ever pulled an automatic in your driveway jacked and blocked up? If you pull one, what is a newer design transmission if it is a '73 big block?
thanks for the new videos and good job diagnosing ALL the problems
Hope someday you do cover that crossfire system….I have an 82 and I’m sure someday it will give me problems.Love your channel…wish I was closer .
Ben I just watched this again for the millionth time 😂 do you have more footage on this before you had to drop the transmission? I think mine is just from the housing where speedo connects but you already had it out and didn’t show it going back in
Apparently the pump seal fails there due to high pressures only in that location. (Pressure regulator valve) Trans techs advise to silicone the lower pump bolts at the same location as they may leak as well.
P.S. I replace all my vehicles with aluminum trans pans. More contact surface and never use cork or rubber gaskets. Steel enforced silicone or paper. Difficult to "squeeze out".
Glad your finally back.
Best Corvette channel on UA-cam 🏁
These old gm transmissions especially the th350s love to leak, it seems like no matter how hard you try to seal it all up with fresh seals and gaskets, carefully torque everything, they still find a way to leak. Pretty much every th350 I have ever seen leaked, usually pretty bad too.
Awesome content. I have learned alot about there 3rd generation vettes. I own chargers & challengers!
slick to think outside the box, have a funny thought my 46 chevy truck, may or might be similar, before installation I did all the seals and it haunts me again
Surprised you didn't try to straighten out the mating lip on the oil pan before installing. Always see Mortske do that on his channel - but his stuff is usually in alot worse shape than yours. LOL
As the old saying says "a teachable moment". That sucked, but we learned a lot.
Sepentza sent me. Cool channel, cool cars. The American dream.
With my experience with chevy transmissions the front seals are always the ones that go bad because of the heat that builds up around them.
Plot twist! Bummer… but hey… you fixed them all now! No more leaks
Thank you for teaching I forgot half of what I used to know and the other half changed with the difference from factory parts to aftermarket parts a lot of them are junk as you probably know thanks again
I had a th350 that when I got up there with a borescope camera found out that it was the pump seal that was leaking. That was after trying a cork a neoprene and a rubber MSD pan gaskets
Does that seal tool work for shift selector seals on the 4-speed cars too? About to reseal the super t-10 in my ‘80.
You can make a video longer than 15 minutes. I wanted to see more. :)
Funny you say that because the average view duration is less than 4 mins. According to my analytics, longer videos just dont get watched
@@TheCorvetteBen you mean to tell me that viewers watch less than 4 minutes of Ben videos!? What’s wrong with them? Don’t they know troubles are always in the last place you look! Keep up the good work Ben, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Excellent video. Thanks
Do you have a link to but the Thread selector removal tool?
Yaay! A new video!
Well that sucks atleast now he will know it wont ever leak for many years
This was a very helpful video.
Very helpful, thanks!!!!
great video on getting rid of leaks from the tranny!
Isn't that the way it always is...
Good corvette video
Always sumpin’.
modulator or governor o ring
Tour of new shop please
What's that tools name for the seal on the gear selector?
Murphys law Ben
Thank God I missed you
What your dealing with there is just age and heat. 1982 was the first year for the 700R4. If you replace the torque converter seal be sure to put thread locking compound on the outer part of the seal. Those had a tendency to blow out especially when you replaced the seal. Not sure why other than the new seals might be slightly smaller. I will be honest on that vintage transmission, when they leak it usually always has to removed and resealed. The early 700s just seemed to be that way.
Correct. The earlier 700 pumps need to be modified to keep from blowing the seal out. You need to separate the pump. The oil return hole in the cover needs drilled out to 1/4 inch (later ones were at factory). Press the bushing out, and use the 1/4 drill and make two notches 180 degrees apart on the inner edge where the bushing sits. Loctite the bushing and press it in. Stake it where the notches are. Wire wheel the paint off of the new seal, and loctite it in too. Get a retaining clip off a later model 700 and put it on the pump to help hold the seal in.

Had the same problem out of a turbo 350. Back in 1982 Did everything you did . Still had a leak pull the transmission. Tore it down and there it was. Same problem
OMG Ben how’d you know this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. Just seeing the title I can’t wait to watch. My 700r4 is leaking all over!
Good job Ben.
Finally !!!!!
Thank you Corvette Ben this video was extremly educational for me you help me solve my transmission issues on my 77 C3. The leakage was the shifter leakage and what a bitch to replace.
Great stuff!! your professional videos are very pleasant to watch and learn!!👍
Hey Ben, enjoy your videos, I just bought my 5th corvette a 77 black 4 speed , my first standard transmission and I love it. I do have a noise from the rear end when I go around a corner while taking off. I've been told that it's the clutch pack in the rear end, not familiar with that. Have you ever experienced that..? Thanks Ralph
I think I have the same leak around the pump housing on my Grand Ville with a TH400. Thx for showing the removed pump...i let myself get all anxious when thinking about working on auto trans...they seem like 50 percent magic. You would think the shop would have caught that after The 2nd trip.
Gotta say those collector vettes are super sharp
Had the same problem with the 700R4 in a 1985 C4 about nine years ago. Sadly after doing a bunch of work to that car including a new interior someone ran into the back of it and the insurance company totalled it out.
You had a learning experience... Another excellent, detail-oriented video. Thanks!
