Sim Racing and DIY/Maker projects are two of my favorite things right now. I also like sharing my passions with people and making tutorials here on UA-cam. So boom here you go! This is the first video in a series that I hope will give people a good starting point to build their own DIY Replica & Custom Steering wheels. From steering wheels you can carry a lot of this knowledge over to making and modding button boxes, pedals, motor vibrators, etc...
A huge shout out to the Turn Racing DIY Wheel builders Discord. It's an amazing place to share your projects, get help with specific problems and just share your passion for DIY Sim Racing gear. Also Zach from Turn Racing is a DIYer who has turned his passion into a business offering amazing physical products, DIY components, and complete high quality DIY CAD files. It's rare a Company and Entrepreneur shares so much with a community! So please check out his channel and website.
By far SendCutSend has been the fastest and most economical source of Front Plates for me. They have instant quotes, quick turn around times, fast shipping and quality cutting services. They've just added Carbon Fiber as an option. But their Aluminum and Stainless steel is a great option for front plates, custom mounts, paddles and even a custom set of pedals if you want to design your own.
Lastly if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments below.

Note: The Turn GTE isn't currently available on the Turn Racing site. He's working on having production setup for this.
Note: I've added a link to Ponoko - a laser cutting service for Acrylic and other similar materials. This is the service I reference when I say a 5mm Acrylic plate and paddles can be cut for ~$45.
how did you get the aluminum metal shifter mechanism
@@fernank017 What pare of the video are you referring to?
@@BallisticTech haha nothing specifically - in part 1 you mentioned using turn racings shift mechanism, but it was metallic. I was wondering if you had it CND’d
@@fernank017 I haven't had any parts cnc'd. So far it's been prohibitively expensive. I bought metal ones from Turn and that's it so far. Everything else I've done has been laser cut or 3d printed.
@@BallisticTech ahh I suspected as much. I couldn’t find the metal shifters on turns website, just the CAD files.
When are we gonna see a part 3? I'm loving this series so far!
Sorry I haven't been able to maintain the series. I still want to put up the 3rd video in the series. They take quite a while to plan and execute
This is the best series in DIY sim racing, please give it priority since we absolutely love it
Hey Brian, you intend releasing part 3 in the near future? Have watched part 1 and 2 like a 1000 000 times!
Amazing as always 🙌
Proper content yet again Brian, thank you!
I just stumpeled upon your channel and i have to say this is some seriosly good content. Subscribed on the spot
i was just getting started in this series only to find theres no part 3. I'm gonna jump in the discord for sure!
Awesome video. Please keep doing these DIY vids!
I'm still working on these. They take a LONG time to produce.
Gold mine of info, subbed and thankyou for sharing
Such a legend explaining this amazing topic to us! thx mate
do you ever continue the videos about diy simracing wheels?
Your content rocks my dude
Really great and informative video. Perfect! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I hope to pick the series back up one day
@@BallisticTech Please do. I'll be watching. Was thinking about building one of these with nice wooden grips instead of the 3d-printed plastic ones. It does look nice in my head at least haha :D
20:15 Oh, I see someone else decided to make my pedal project.
Hey. Welcome. I haven't gotten them cut yet. A lot of US based cutting services only have imperial gauge material. So like 3.2mm. I was worried about having to go in and adjust every slot to make sure there's clearance.
I've studied the pedals a lot and learned a lot. Maybe I'll do a video on them down the road!
Cheers. Thanks for watching
@@BallisticTech Everything is calculated for metal 3mm thick (the grooves are 3.1mm in size for a good assembly). So 3.2mm will definitely not fit, or you will have to redo all the gaps to 3.3mm. Plus, lengthen the length of the shanks that are inserted into the groove, up to 3.2 mm.
@@BallisticTech You can also expand the grooves with a file.
@@_ZERgyt_ True. I think I'll order just a few test parts around the brake load cell and see how the tolerances/clearances work out.
Amazing video, pls keep making content :D
What materials, cutting techniques, cuttings services, painting or wrapping techniques have you used? LMK!
PART 3 ????? it's been 10 months!
Just for the record, I had an Aston Martin GT3 plate and a 911 Cup Button plate, both from 4mm carbon as well as 2 smaller 3mm pieces all cut and shipped to my door for less than $90
What service did you use?
i would very much like to see next video parts - will they be produced or its over?
Thanks. I've moved and had some changes where I haven't been building wheels as much. I'm very much hoping to continue the series.
I've written out the grips video and some other parts. But I try to be exhaustive with the videos so they take a whole to produce.
Part 3???
seems that turn doesnt offer things anymore
Turn has made all of their 3d models free which is great. They no longer offer the bare ones kits
21:52 buttons cover and knobs, .28:18 spacer- how te reach that quality? That is not 3D printed but could anyone tell me?
I’m probably a little late, but they are sls 3D printed. It’s a much finer and more complex process compared to fdm
No more videos?
where's part 3???
In the works. A lot of techniques and things to try and cover for grips. I'm hopefully recording or finding references for many/all of them
When’s the next episode coming out?
Paused for a slight second. Checking out some different options for grips and wrapping.
Also got some new thrustmater gear in that will appear on the channel.
But I'd say next 2 weeks.
@@BallisticTech Nice, I’m a mech eng student and my buddy is working on the grips for the steering wheel for the baja team I’m interested to see what you come up with
@@BallisticTech =(
I guess this is over?
Just haven't had a lot of time to work on content. Both the first two took like 5+ hours each to plan and produce.
