Nick Ariondo's first introduction to Paganini's "Perpetual Motion" was during his early studies with renown classical accordionist Anthony Galla-Rini. The great 19th century violinist Niccolo Paganini composed his 'Moto Perpetuo" for violin with piano accompaniment. After 4 years with Galla-Rini, Nick moved on to study jazz with the famous jazz accordionist Tommy Gumina (of Buddy DeFranco/Tommy Gumina fame). With Gumina, Nick learned the free-bass accordion, playing Gumina's custom built instrument designed for Tommy Gumina by the Imperial Accordion Company of Chicago. As Nick progressed on the free-bass, Gumina introduced him to Paganini's "Perpetual Motion" where they worked together, utilizing the left hand/right hand technique of the free-bass to its fullest capacity.....During his studies with Gumina and throughout years of serious study, practice techniques, composing & arranging, Nick Ariondo came to develop this incomparable arrangement in parallel/contrary motion on both left and right hands, in unisons, 3rds, 5ths mixed with chordal and melodic inventiveness -- a perpetual whirlwind of technical velocity in the highest order. Nick plays Gumina's free-bass Imperial accordion on this video performance -- this free-bass left-hand system is made up of single notes only (no pre-set chords). Other videos you can see Ariondo playing the standard 'stradella' left--hand system (another ingenious set-up of single-notes and pre-set chords patterns). Whether free-bass, chromatic or piano accordion, it's all a matter of approach -- the instrument is the vehicle driven by the mastery and skillfulness of the performer. www.NickAriondo...

I have played accordion my whole life and was pretty good...good enough to pay my way through law school playing at weddings and parties and I also was a fan of all the great accordionists throughout history of all styles....THIS GUY IS THE GREATEST accordionist I have ever seen or heard
Nobody I have ever seen can play the left hand with this degree of virtuosity
    UNBELIEVABLE

Phenomenal mastery of the accordion. Rare ability of equivalence of left and right hand. No one error or dissonance throughout. Greetings from Bulgaria.

This is consummate mastery at it's finest. Very unique left hand construction ; skeleton framing to optimize sound (no bass plate, and the cover completely removed revealing all the mechanism.). Certainly extremely uncomfortable to play. Plus it's the Titano six-row system, a six-row system that reproduces the two-row Stradella system of fourths, fifths, and upper thirds at octave intervals. Absolutely hellish to play. Master Ariondo must have had a phenomenally powerful "mental". His teacher (thanks for informing us of this) Tommy Gumina was the first to have arranged, and recorded, a version of this piece. It seems that Ariondo took it much further. This is pure wizardry at work. Very admirable. However, I'm afraid that it might not be the best approach to get the accordion out of it's closed claustrophobic tight circle. Don't get me wrong, this gentleman deserves praise, but our instrument still has roads to take before holding hands with other instruments and traveling down NEW roads. But Maestro Ariondo will go down the Hall of Fame, may God bless his soul.

if you look carefully the bass mechanism is enclosed in clear plastic. that's so cool! Also seems to be a reversed quint system with low octaves close to bass strap instead of near register switches.
