How to Make Your First Batch of Mead

  • I've only been at Clawhammer for 2 weeks and Kyle has already left me ALONE to make some mead (I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING). Before this, I had no idea that all it took to make some was water, honey and yeast. I'm also using a kit by Golden Hive Mead, which actually makes the process pretty easy. Though, I'm still very nervous.
    Come back for part 2 to see if I totally messed it up, or if I successfully made some mead!
    And here's the kit i'm using: goldenhivemead.com/products/g...

    Ok, Libby was actually right about the gravity reading in an earlier draft of this video. The gravity was 1.20+ not 1.020 and Kyle messed up by telling her to change the voice over. He was probably still hung over from his vacation. We can't fire him because he owns the company, but we did let him know that you all think he is dumb.

      @3:56 it looks like the gravity reading was actually 1.122

      I'm thinking more like 1.120, and not 1.200, as first most hydrometers don't go that high, and second, that's about right for the amount of honey used and the amount of space she left in a gallon container.

    For those unfamiliar with mead making, one pound of honey dissolved in water to make 1 US gallon raises the gravity of the water by 35 points (to 1.035), Two pounds to make the same volume raises the gravity by 70 points and 3 lbs will raise that same total volume by 1.035. How much water was in Libby's jar? Her hydrometer reading does not make a lot of sense, but if anyone knows the likely volume of must in that jar, they will be able to calculate the likely specific gravity (density) of the syrup (must).
    Honey has no nutrients that homey needs to replicate in a healthy manner - none, nada, zero. That stresses the yeast. And stressed yeast are very karmic. They return the favor by stressing the wine maker with their fine production of hydrogen sulfide, a gas that smells like rotten eggs.
    And for many who live in cities, tap water contains chlorine and other chemicals added not so much for taste but for health reasons. You want to use quality spring water: chlorine free. The chlorine can add nasty flavors to the phenols that the yeast produce: think chloro-phenolic cough medicine.

But i really like these 1 Gal videos, as a new brewer I started with a 1 gal kit like most and actually bought from a different company.... Mostly because i didnt know yall had a 1 gallon set! would love to see some more one gallon recipes/brew videos for newbies!

    I would take the gravity reading before pitching the yeast. Not sure why the manufacturer of the fermenter also takes readings after pitching

    • @jacobsonye3677
      @jacobsonye3677 3 місяці тому

      My only thought on this is that when yeast is added, the specific gravity of a material is fully present. If you take the specific gravity of a substance without having all of the matter present of the water, honey, AND yeast, you’re taking a partial (albeit potentially negligible) specific gravity reading. TLDR: your density reading will be off because the calculation for specific gravity is derived from density of the object by the density of water.

    • @jmgacousticmusic
      @jmgacousticmusic 3 місяці тому +1

      @@jacobsonye3677 taking a reading at the start when you have pitched and mixed in the yeast will result in a higher density which will skew the results. Once fermentation has completed the majority of yeast will drop out of suspension hence your final reading will not include them. That's the reason for taking a reading of the fermentable fluid to start , and the fermented fluid at the end.

    I have a question about sanitising. I have sanitised everything well beforehand. During the process, I did rinse my gallon and airlock a few times with a regular towel, the airlock contains plain water from the tap and once I used a pipette that I forgot to sanitise for a moment... Could this cause a problem? Or is this normally not too bad?

    • @williamjrgensen9930
      @williamjrgensen9930 6 місяців тому +1

      It’s not that bad. What you risk of have happening (when not sanitizing) is allowing bacterial growth to grow alongside your yeast creating mold and what not. If your stuff is clean, then don’t worry. You’ll know if it’s gone bad.
