Hey, nothing wrong at all with X570. You just have to make sure to stayed away from the few models that turned out to be awful designs. But you are all set for Zen3 and have ALL PCIe4.0 connections so you will have a solid system for many years to come. No regrets!

Something I found to be a problem with cheaper, overlockable chipsets is that certain functionalities in the BIOS are lacking or not quite as well implemented. Now, that may not seem like a big deal, but since I'm very OC oriented, it really makes a difference to me if the LoadLine Calibration is configured properly or not. Same goes for the Vdroop and in general certain secondary voltages. I got myself a B350 from Asrock at the time and the VRMs were simply great. Great temps, great stability, but the overclocks I was getting simply were not quite as good as on X370, simply because of the LoadLine and of some voltages.

I'm glad to see that the VRMs are so good on the B550 Taichi because that means the VRMs on the Steel Legend and Extreme4 should also be really good. They use the same components and the main difference seems to be that they have 12 Vcore phases instead of 14.
The Taichi looks like a really nice board but the Steel Legend and Extreme4 for ~60% of the price are a lot closer to what I'm willing to pay, and they still have a lot of the features that I like about the Taichi (including a front USB Type-C header, an integrated I/O shield, a post code display, and even power/reset buttons on the Extreme4). No clear CMOS button or BIOS flashback though (and no Wifi/Bluetooth).

Appreciate your review of this board. I think that B550 is a good chipset. It's kind of ironic that as pricing is just approaching what is standard for Intel chipsets we are kind of balking at the "higher prices" but I think for the features you get this chipset provides a very nice value proposition.

Great review Tech YES City! Strange that no one else got this board for review. It seems this board is delayed since it is not available anywhere, I heard it is due to the Human malware situation. So it is 15 days delayed in some parts of the world. I Preordered this so hoping to get my hands on it soon here in Sweden. One minor thing though, you did not show us what was included with the board inside the box. Regarding front panel USB Type C connectors on the mobbos. It is worth pointing out in future reviews for instance that the Gigabyte B550 boards even the top end Master one is missing one of those and THAT IS SHOCKINGLY BAD considering the price of that board! And some of them like the popular MSI Tomahawk one only have the front connector as gen 1 meaning maximum 5GB/s so not the good kind the Gen 2 with 10GB like this ASRock one have. No reviewer seems to be pointing these things out.

Now that's what I call a motherboard review!
I had my heart set on an MSI B550m Mortar rather than the Tomahawk (I don't have the room for a full ATX) but according to one of the first reviews out there by PC Gamer when stressed out with an 3950X:
"We did witness alarming power draw on this board though, and performance
during testing was erratic, to say the least. Cinebench performance
dropped considerably towards the end of the initial sweep of testing"
Would be nice to know if this was a one-off with their sample as I've now got doubts.

It's a better board. It even fixed the internal USB Type C header positioning problem that the X570 had. You give up a bit of I/O but personally, I wouldn't be using that I/O anyway. I most likely wouldn't even be taking advantage of the PCIE4.0 M.2 slot, as I prefer Samsung SSDs. Maybe Samsung will eventually make a PCIE4.0, I think there's a 980 Pro coming but it won't be cheap. And even if so, I'd only need one of them. 3000mb/s is fine for a second drive. Heck, even 1000mb/s is.

In America on Newegg, they are the same price too; $299. Which board to get depends on your needs. If you need maximum connectivity then X570 is best. But if you only need "normal" amounts of drives/slots used then B550 would suit your fine. Two things I have to give the win to the B550 Taichi for are that it doesn't have the chipset fan, and it LOOKS so much nicer than the X570 model.

X570 owner. I lol when people keep knocking the chipset fan as if it's cooling the Sahara Desert while sounding like a jet engine.
B550 is a solid choice for most people. Feature set wise. Most people won't see the difference between the B550 and X570.
X570 will give you more pro consumer features if you utilize it or not. M.2 Gen 4 speed ssd's. Even then, most could go without an X570.
Just get what you can afford. Sucks that it's not as affordable as it was originally thought but that might be more of the world crisis.

Based on that I think it should also have really good VRMs, but I would also like to see an actual review of it with real testing to be sure. he's talking about chipset lanes (PCH) 16 CPU lanes go to the the top 16x slot, 4 CPU lanes go to the chipset which are then divided into the 4 3.0 lans and 8 2.0 lanes. I think there is also another 4 lanes on the cpu dedicated for an M.2 slot. So in total it is 24 PICE gen 4 from the cpu. 4 of them are reserved for the chipset and the rest can be used

Don't most x570 boards not support SLI (splitting the x16 socket)? I'm actually planning to downgrade from an Asus X570-P to B550 mainly to get away from the fan (Asus still hasn't added PCH fan control!🙄), and to be able to run more Gen 4 NVmes. Essentially gain 8 Gen4 lanes and loosing 2 (50%) from the chipset is a worthwhile compromise to me.
PS: It would be good to see a like for like comparison of power usage (X550 draws too much power IMHO).

Well, it's not entirely untrue that a B450 tomahawk can handle a more demanding CPU relatively fine and availability here seems to be ok. Still, looking to the future, I'd rather have gen4 support from the chipset, better VRM overall, more SATA ports, support for higher frequency RAM etc. Plus, not knowing the power figures for zen3 a B450 seems to be kind of an iffy choice. So an X570 does seem to be the best choice, all things considered.

And with all that left over space on the rear I/O would it have killed them to include a PS/2 combo port? Heck, AMD should be REQUIRING BIOS Flashback on ALL AM4 mobos except MAYBE the A320/A520 etc. since those are intended mostly for uses where it is INCREDIBLY unlikely that someone will be upgrading the CPU without upgrading the whole platform. I don’t mean that it should be banned from the A320/A520, just not required.

I still don't get why most if not all AM4 X570/B550 boards put those 5GHz memory speeds on the box or website. All of those familiar with Zen2 know that if you run your memory speeds outside of Zen2's RAM/F'Clock's 1to1 ratio (which is about 3600MHz-3800MHz on the RAM and about 1800MHz-1900MHz on the F'Clock) would watch there performance fall off a cliff.
What benefits is there running your ram at 4000MHz-5000MHz if all it does is cripple the systems performance. Maybe a CPU-z or AIDA64 screenshot is all about those memory speeds are worth.
That's one main reason i stuck with intel. I have a couple kits of 4000CL15 Elite dimms that were collecting dust, so i put together another 3 Gaming PC's to sell and used 3 more z390 ASUS XI (11) HERO's and 3 i9 9900's. What nobody realized or just plain missed is that the regular i9 9900's have a max turbo boost clock of 5GHz. So using MCE or all core turbo, you can run all cores at 5GHz. I'm almost dumb-founded that no one has done this or even made a video about this. Well, i'm sure plenty knew, they probably didn't want to lose there intel connection for showing others how to basically do non-K overclocking...lol. Though, really this time its on intel, for making the 9900's boost clock 5GHz. When someone hears 5GHz 9th Gen i9, they know its good for gaming...Also with z370-z390 boards, DDR4 can also be overclocked with 8th or 9th Gen non-K CPU's. Not sure about 10th Gen. I think intel put another road block in place for that. Just like there VROC keys on early x299. Why would they take away another budget overclocking option like RAM overclocking on non Z-series boards when that all everyone's been screaming for. AMD have at least listened. Anyways...
I've made great gaming rigs using 5GHz non-K i9's running 4GHz kits of Sammy B-die. Throw in a few $900 eVGA 2080ti's and you got yourself a top of the line gaming PC. With DELL, HP and all those Custom PC venders like Xidax or Cyberpower selling the same spec't out builds at sometimes over $3000-$3500, I had no issues selling one of these builds for $2500 or more, depending.
Lets just say i bought out Micro Centers 9th Gen. i9's (K's and non-K's) along with there what z390 boards they had left. Ram kits too. 32GB kits of GSkills Trident Z RGB 3200CL16 were only $180. I bought the last five kits they had in stock. That's $90 for a 16GB kit of nice RGB ram. For 16GB's of GSkills Ripjaws V 3200CL16, it was only $60 a kit. $80 for the 16GB kits of 3600CL16. All these kits can overclock to atleast 3733CL17 and that's the worst single dimms. I've had 2 out of 20 dimms that couldn't do 3800CL17, even with all the voltage in the world. The IC's just wouldn't. So i paired those 2 lesser 8GB dimms and overclocked'em to 3733CL17. Called it a job well done. No medium rare overclocks here. Some awesome deals on new RAM though. 64GB's of 3200CL16 for $240.
I remember paying that for a 16GB kit of GSkills FLARE X 3200CL14 Samsung B-die. I think that RAM was the only new components i bought. All that RAM will help out on some future builds i have planned. I only do this on the side but, it hasn't been a better time to buy last years high-end PC components, then right now. So, i'm investing a little more of my time to this PC stuff i love.
I recommend going to your local Micro Center or if you got a first party PC components vendor somewhere near you, go empty out there stock. I've got up to 70% off of some major parts like GPU's, CPU's, RAM and motherboards. I even got a whole pallet of 2018 32inch 144Hz Freesync LG-650GKF monitors for 70% off. Those exact monitors are going for $300-$350 right now.
Just last week these discounts did not exist. I hope you guys find the deals like i got. I wish these were online so i could share the goods.

Cheers mate, first review I've seen of this board. Features and hardware wise, it's my favorite AMD board right now, everything I need but without a chipset fan. I want to use this board for the next 5 years. One thing you didn't mention is that the internal gen 2 header on the X570 was in a really bad place, it's been fixed now with the B550. The only thing that could prevent me getting this motherboard is bios or hardware bugs that might show up after people start using them. Little things like random BSODs, wierd bootup/POST issues or coming in and out of sleep properly in Windows, or other quirks that I don't want to have to put up with. I've been using Intel for 10 years and my current OC'd Intel system is 6 years old and hasn't had a BSOD all year. Not one. This kind of experience seems rare with AMD. A lot of AMD users seem to think BSOD are normal. They shouldn't be. Anyways, this is the highest end board on B550 platform, it even has a backplate, and it's the only board with 8 SATA ports. It's also the only board that doesn't disable a PCIE slot, if you use the second M.2 slot.

    • @christopherjames9843

I have to disagree on BSOD's. To say Intel has less BSOD than AMD is anectdotal and hasn't been my experience.

    • @Jonw8222
      @Jonw8222 4 роки тому +1

@@christopherjames9843 I'm not saying I've never had BSOD. On this same Intel system I've had them, early on it was the Corsair RAM I was using (at stock XMP). I would have 10 BSOD a year (completely random). It could run Prime95 for days in a row.. but out of the blue, during idle.. it would just blue screen. After a few years, I upgraded to better Corsair RAM and most of them went away. My CPU degraded a little over time, so I backed off on the clocks a little. But 6 years since buying it.. in 2020.. no BSOD in 6 months. PC systems are complicated, it's hard to generalize. It's not necessarily an Intel vs AMD thing, but on this specific system it's as close to perfect as I've ever had. And I do see a lot of talk on AMD reddit.. where people talk about BSOD a lot. It could simply be.. these are gamers with budget hardware that are pushing their systems too hard.
There's so many things that can cause them, from the software side, graphics drivers, USB drivers.. it can be anything. I even saw some comments in the last 24 hours that Windows updates do it too. Generally though, I think people push their memory controller or memory frequency too hard. My main point is.. once you get used to never having them, it's hard to go backwards.
