I've got a large 2 meter rack like these. I varnished the mdf boards to give it a bit of water protection and also got mats that totally cover them from Amazon.
All of my stuff is wood that I've sealed every nook & cranny of BEFORE assembling it & touching it up after. (ETA: If you're worried, get pressure treated lumber & plywood & paint it.) That's served me very well with my chicken coop that's lasted 9 years so far with no water damage - in areas exposed to constant rain for many days at a time. I don't trust metal as much as it will rust in spots you can't even see until it suddenly breaks.
They don't seem to sell the exact one I have anymore :(. This is the closest thing they still have listed for sale - www.diy.com/departments/s-rax-2-tier-workbench-150cm-x-45cm-x-90cm/5055986196259_BQ.prd
Beginner in the hobby, and learnt a lot from this.
I like to use wax on both the different wood bases I have so far.
Wax is a good shout! It should definatley be able to keep the wood serviceable for longer.

Thats definatley something I need to try on my next racks :)
Great video Shaun, I did have some questions about racking systems, but you answered all of them and then some!
Cheers mate :)

Thanks for sharing mate :) taking alot of notes for my next fish room as I want a big one with a lot of racks.
LOVE that set up!!!!!
Cheers mate :), its still a work in progress but its getting there.
@ I’m gonna start my “tank wall” one day using this shelf look! It’s so cool!
Thats what i'm aiming for eventually :)
Nice one ... personally I would just seal/paint the mdf
Good point mate, didnt think of it even though I have some sealant somewhere :(
@GlassBoxDiaries your like me forget the little things ..lol sealer cheaper than plywood kinda lol
Costco, lowes, home depot! $100 or less! I am waiting on moving to my own place later this year to get some and build out a fish room.
Theres some great deals on racking over in the USA, we usually pay almost double by what I saw on Amazon.
@GlassBoxDiaries Probably because your racks will last 2x longer 😌
These days there's an array of different waterproofing products that would work on MDF, and who knows, some of them might even strengthen it more.
Thats a good point mate, I have some water proof sealer for garden fences somewhere, I should have gave it a try to see if it helps.
Am having trouble locating the B and Q stainless.steel shelving you use for your heavier tanks, mind dogging out a link please 🙏
