+lewisner I agree. It's as old as I am (born 5/57) yet looks new. I suspect it was shot on high quality film. It's one of the reasons shows like 'I Love Lucy' (1951-'57) and 'The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour' ('57-'60) still look 'new' also. I recently saw episodes of each show on the new CBS retro station, 'Decades'. It's remarkable and wonderful at the same time. Disposable junk like today's 2 Broke Girls' not so much.
The Killer was the only one from the artists appearing in " Disc Jockey Jamboree" who sang live! He refused to lip-sync "Great Balls Of Fire" when he was told to. The director was so fascinated of Jerry Lee that he played his song for or five times after it was already filmed...
This clip is from the 1957 movie "Jamboree" which is why it's so clear. Jerry lip syncs the song. This movie version IMHO is superior to the later take of the the song which was released on the Sun 45. The movie version is available on Bear Family's 18 CD "Sun Collected Works" box set which corrects an error they made with their first JLL box issued in 1987 where they billed the wrong take as the movie version.
Those little kids that have been born this year will never understand how good this picture was back then for the time... Also this shows how good he was at the piano, he's moving his hands around and slamming the keys and not even looking down
let's see, where to begin. first JLL has no microphone, bass player has no chord or amp, drummer has brushes instead of sticks and is not moving on the breaks. but this is great stuff.
IF not for a "horrible" personal life, Jerry Lee Lewis would have been the King of Rock roll it's been said. I agree. His personal demons were horrible (Marrying his little-girl cousin) destroyed him and his career. Elvis was very talented, but not as talented as Jerry Lee Lewis in my eyes.
Have you heard the tremendous range of material Elvis covered? JLL may have been better in one area of the spectrum. But Elvis's talent covered such a wide gamut of material of many genders and his voice when need be at some points was "opera" in its tessiture. No comparison!
Daniel Gajdoš A King, to remain one, has to have subjects who love him and, that means, worldwide, at least 100 million subjects. And with 50 million albums and 20 million singles sold worldwide JLL is certainly short by about 930 million records to the one who had, and has that BIG of a following. So big that 20 million including Royals, heads of State, celebrities of every walk of life, have paid to see his house. So big that a billion viewers saw his INTELSAT telecast back in 1973.
Daniel Gajdoš The title of King you want to bestow upon JLL is what destroys your agenda, since first of all a King is not necessarily the best, or the first, or the cutest, tallest, or the most talented, no that's not why they called the other the King. it was because he "reigned" , in everything possible way related to the advent of rock and roll as the top music medium in America, then the world. And secondly, a King is precisely what the one they call King hated to be called.
Jim Burrows Here's how and why the other "reigned". How about being responsible for huge increase in the sale of guitars, personal record players, recorders, jukeboxes, televisions, singles, extended plays albums, albums, let alone the cost of ads in primetime television jumping exponentially from US$90,000 to US$250,000 a minute, or how about drawing 250 million cumulative television viewers, 500,000 teenagers to see his live performances and seven million kids to his first movie. T ry, then in that 11 month period, selling US$20 million (1956 dollars) of apparel and other stuff bearing your name. Thats why "Variety" called him the King of Rock and Roll.
Jim Burrows Now, for someone to act like a King, outside of his profession, one must do something BIG for his fellow man like say, being innoculated on national television with the third version, which was untried, nationally, of Jonas Salk's polio vaccine and, say, hope for the best, right? If, in six months, your advocacy shot the inmunization level across the entire US from a meager 0.6% to a mighty 80 percent than you are, in fact, reigning over the lives of people most of whom, the older ones, care NOT to be your subjects. But those 30 million watching football on that Sunday afternoon of October 28, 1956, and had their game watching interrupted at halftime for 5 minutes must have called their friends and families because by April of 1957, polio was all but elliminated as a threat.
Jim Burrows Can you imagine a person of JLL's personality, and character (lol) having this kind of POSITIVE and what's more important, HUGE impact on an entire nation, in the 1956-57 biennium, even if he'd tried it? Just by looking into a camera, his mean gaze would make half of those viewing turn their eyes away from the TV set, as changing the channel on a nationally televised broadcast would offer not that of an easier option. LOL.
Gomer Pyle can sure hammer those keys! lol He would never make it today. He has to much talent. Todays it is just a beauty contest. With autotune, industry song writers, and back up band. You don't need a lick of musical talent anymore.
Well the bass player is J.W. Brown(still livin' today, 90+ y.o.) father of his ex-wife Myra and his family member. And the drummer is Russell Smith, originally drummer for Sonny Burgess, but at the beginning of 1957 he left to work with Jerry Lee. These two rock 'n rollin' wild men were playin' with Jerry Lee everywhere until 1959. Then they broke up. But in 1969, drummer Russ Smith toured with Jerry Lee again. He can be seen in Toronto festival 1969, The Many Sounds of Jerry Lee(tv program) or the Ed Sullivan show. Sadly Russ passed away someday in 2003. He will be remembered as The Wildest Rock 'n Roll drummer EVER! I hope I've helped.
Elton John shook when he met him for the first time on stage. John Lennon bent down and kissed his feet.
THE GREATEST THERE EVER WAS!!
Picture quality is incredible for 1957 ?
+lewisner I agree. It's as old as I am (born 5/57) yet looks new. I suspect it was shot on high quality film. 1:06 Oh yeah feels good...
Unbelievable that this is 63 years ago
When we were young, we wished to grow up to discover life... When we grew up, we wished to be young again to escape from what we discovered...
Those little kids that have been born this year will never understand how good this picture was back then for the time...
Also this shows how good he was at the piano, he's moving his hands around and slamming the keys and not even looking down
Love the early R&R with just a few instruments. I didn't appreciate JLL back in the day, but I do now.
That bass was ahead of its time. No chords, no amps! WOW!

I've never been jealous of a piano!!!
The weird thing about Jerry Lee Lewis iit is reported that he just had nature ability to play piano.
The sole remaining pioneer of rock and roll
Jack Renaud ...He was a serious badass on that piano!
Happy 80th.Birthday Killer..
Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935) .
let's see, where to begin. first JLL has no microphone, bass player has no chord or amp, drummer has brushes instead of sticks and is not moving on the breaks. but this is great stuff.

Rene J. Kirchheimer that is true, but Elvis did say he would’ve quit doing his thing if he could play the piano anywhere near Lewis’ skill
Pure and simple R & R... on video.
Who had the foresight and unquestionable intelligence to record this ?!
Where ?

SO badass, he didn't need guitars anywhere in his band. :^)
Recorded for the film, "Jamboree" released by Warner Bros. 1957.

Gomer Pyle can sure hammer those keys! lol He would never make it today. He has to much talent. Todays it is just a beauty contest. With autotune, industry song writers, and back up band. You don't need a lick of musical talent anymore.

A Piano, a bass and drums.
Well piano and drums anyway. I don't think the bass is plugged in.
It´s from a movie (Jamboree) and it´s playback, not live.
me gusta mas la interpretación de la pelicula
I like the interpretation of the movie more
Guess singers weren't all actors first back then !
