An article a couple of years ago claimed that in 49 of the 50 states, the highest paid public employee was a college football or men's basketball coach. The best solution is to end big-time college revenue sports. Let the pros fund their own minor league teams.
He did take fault for hiring the guys. I do believe that he didn't know but... Stephen A. is right, he absolutely should have known given how much he makes, his stature and experience.

mid majors usually 20,000
high majors 50-100K plus other incentives i was told these things personally on numerous accounts
i remember i few years back when dennis smith jr took like 30k to play for team loaded to stay on the adiddas circut.
i also remember when all american isaiah whitehead took like 40k and a brand new bmw to go to seton hall a mid major who had no business signing him.
anybody that knows people within the industry knows that its pretty customary to monetarily incentivize most top recruits.

I don't think Pitino was completely involved, but I am sure he knew what was going on but maybe not the entire thing. It's not a coach problem it starts from the top. It doesn't start from a coach doing it just because it comes down for the AD and maybe even higher. Coaches know what's going on but they can't say anything because they will be blamed and shunned but they also get slayed when the entire story comes out even if they weren't involved.

+Jon Duncan. Truth. And the college coaches telescope the athlete's upside and get kickbacks for getting these recruits from/for the sponsor. The institutions know this as well because it means advert dollars for them in the long run. I remember years ago when Kentucky was in the mouth of every media outlet with Pitino at the helm. He kept his team in the spotlight and made 3 Final Four appearances while there. So he was getting major exposure and the shoe and commerce world gravitated to that school. There is NO way the institution wasn't aware of what was happening then. That's why Louisville wanted the guy! He could bring the same environment to that institution he brought to Kentucky! And Calipari is a spitting image of Pitino...or else he would NOT have been invited to run that program. So they know and knew...from the top to the bottom. It's just a matter of who's going to be the fall guy at this point because once names start getting dropped? It's going to get real ugly. And it's really just a shakedown. There's something larger at stake for the feds to get involved in all of this.
