On the 9th July 2013, Zeynep Alemdar, Vice-president of the European Movement in Turkey was interviewed by EYCA about the protests happening in Gezi Park and the role of social media during these movements.
Zeynep Alemdar highlighted the importance of social media as a tool to fight against the lack of information on the movement. "There have been a lot of reactions from international media when Turkish CNN was airing a documentary about penguins when the protests were taking place and the police was attacking innocent people".
"Turkish activists bring humour and creativity to social media". Zeynep Alemdar explained that Turkish citizens have created a new type of protest with new political forms, expressions, and iterations, where social media is the central communication tool to create 'alternative' demonstrations, to inform national and international audience about what is going on and to denounce police brutality in Turkey.
