    Excellent and informative video. It’s now March 2018 and I’ve begun discussions with our local VW dealership management to consider providing the APR Plus purchase options in the future,: 1) optional with a new car purchase, and 2) as a upgrade option for existing MK7 and MK 7.5 owners 😎

    APR must have updated there literature since the launch of this video because in the APR+ tune description it now says you can pair this with an inlet, intake, IC, piping and catback exhaust, pretty much everything except a downpipe for added power. Even their power power figures are up, last I checked it was around 320whp / 355wtq for the MK7/7.5 Golf R.

    An insurance law needs to be introduced that requires the insurance company to pay back at least 50% of the entire premiums paid if a claim is never filed over the term of the policy for each year. What better way to promote safer driving than money back in your pocket?

      If you buy a new car and sign up within 90 days, for $27 a month you can get geico breakdown insurance. This covers everything on your car from brakes to engine/trans. If something goes out they will have it fixed at the dealer for a $250 deductible. You can keep this on your car for up to 7 years. I do this for all my cars.

    I tried the 87 oct stage 1 which is equivalent with the Apr plus tune on my wife’s new Tiguan. It was very mild and not a huge change. I opted for stage 1 93oct and the Tiguan feels substantially better. I will do 5k intervals for oil. Very pleased.

  • @Ryem3
    @Ryem3 6 років тому +1

    To clarify as someone intimately aware of the Stasis debacle, warranty claims had little if anything to do with their bankruptcy. The acquisition of REVO probably was the biggest factor.
    I have seen dyno graphs from APR showing stage I high torque tunes adding close to 80hp. Not sure where the low HP numbers come from, although there are also milder versions available.

    Great job . And bout time VW and APR team up and retaining a factory warranty with additional power upgrade. Not much power , but it's a good start to a beginning. Wish they covered my mk7 golf r stage 3 + lol not anytime soon but..... works well for me and it's reliable. Not my 1st heavily modded Volkwagen may I add with Apr and other after market Company's 👍 great job Paul as always .. cheers ❗

    I just bought a 2021 GTI. I'm very much interested in squeezing some more power out of it through tuning. I heard APR was great and was very intrigued by the warranty coverage. I did not know it was a financed software. This decision has already squeezed my budget significantly. And the potential for a dealership voiding other warranties is also concerning. It seems like it might be best to just go with an accessport and hope nothing else besides powertrain is voided.
    Thank you for the great information.

    Paul- you mention a lot about bringing tuned cars to mod friendly dealers, but I'm confused. If VW corporate gives the same software detection program to all dealers, and standard procedure for techs when diagnosing problems is to plug in and read the ECU, doesn't the dealer computer flag the car TD1 in the database regardless of if the dealer wants to overlook your tune or not? And I'm assuming warranty work will then look at the database to see if it's been flagged? Or do mod friendly dealer techs break from procedure and not scan it when diagnosing if they can help it? Trying to understand how "mod friendly" dealers get away with getting reimbursed for warranty work on tuned vehicles

    One technician from one side showing the real flaws of the other side in simple terms that we can all understand and relate to. Thank you so much Paul for doing this. If Paul had not done this research for us, we either would have not known about this, or we would have learned from a disgruntled Apr + user about the shitiness. By which time apr+ will already have our money, and may have moved to a different twist of their policy. So once again Paul, thank you for this early warning. However, as you may all know how progress works, we now need someone like Paul in Apr+ to make a similar presentation about unitronics. That's the only way that we the common consumers can be empowered(assuming apr+ and unitronics don't collude). You have to always here both sides of a debate. I can guarantee you that every side tells you only what they want you to know. It's human nature. Hence the need for checks and balances.

    • @JamieHarveyJr
      @JamieHarveyJr 7 років тому

      Has nothing to do with any of that. Has to do with offering a very specific product that the market has asked for. They are buying a new car, want a bit more power but don't want to drive around withthe potential of no warranty coverage. It's clearly not meant to be for everyone but those options have always been around anyway. It's just filling a void for a specific buyer.

    • @iNeedMorePSi
      @iNeedMorePSi 7 років тому +6

      Jamie Harvey JB1 or JB4 tuning box is undetectable. Had it on my BMW no problems for 4 years. My broinlaw 10++years Master BMW Diagnostic tech could do not detect it on the car or off the car. Meaning jusy for visual safety everytime before going in for service take off or if you break something on the side of the road take it off and have towed to dealer. No reason to pay $3k for a shitty watered down tune. There is a market already for not TD1'ing your VW it's called JB1, Neuspeed tuning box etc for under $600. There are no black recording boxes to see history of what may or may not have caused the issues on these cars. 9.9999 out of 10 time something fails it's not your tune or aftermarket parts it's a random defective OEM manufactured part that was bound to fail soon and be glad it happened under your short warranty..
      TLDR Don't want a headache of possible TD1? Go undetectable with JB1/JB4 or other tuning boxes like it for under $600 for more power don't pay for a price gouging $2800 BS tune from the Comcast of euro car tuners.
      Literally APR and VWoA is Ebola right now.

    • @JamieHarveyJr
      @JamieHarveyJr 7 років тому +1

      iNeedMorePSi hate on the option all you want. It still is an option that is now available for those that prefer it. Some people don't want to fuss with removing hardware every time they need the car to go to the dealer. If they forget and it's found to be on the car by a tech, TD1 can still be triggered manually. There is nothing wrong with more options on the market. If it's not for you, simply don't buy it.

    • @iNeedMorePSi
      @iNeedMorePSi 7 років тому +3

      Jamie Harvey nope it's BS, the fine print and restrictions are too and I have a raging hard on right now to educate others and hope for failure to be quite honest. Cut the price in half, allow intakes and exhaust at least. Then it's OK.
      Also the 2 VW dealers around me who are APR dealers among other brands, if they do this I will cease to do business with them for cars or parts and I've bought over 150k of cars from them over the time and that's not including parts. They never had issues supporting modifications and dealing with VWoA for their customers.

    1- Does it reduces life expectancy on the engine/ car?
    2- Does it effect fuel economy?
    3- For a daily driver car, would you recommend a tune or stock?
    4- Can I still service the car at the dealership, I know the warranty will be voided only concerned about the service given that golfs have no history issues and they're very reliable?
    5- Only repeating the first question about milage and life expectancy for the car, also when would be the ideal time to install the tune?

    I wasn't going to comment becasue I see it's a year later, but I see there are still people saying how informational this was just a few weeks ago....... What I would like to know is where you're getting your info from??? Because APR Plus on a (2017) MK7 Golf R is $1,199... not $2,399!!! Power gains are... HP from 292 to 357 (65hp increase) and Torque from 280 to 349 (69 lb-ft torque increase). I will be getting APR Plus on my basic 2017 MK7 Golf S 1.8t this week, and like the fact that it has a warranty. I understand that it's not for everyone, and that's fine. Now even on my little Golf (1.8t motor) hp goes from 170 to 234 (64 increase) and torque from 199 to 273 (74 increase). Im paying an extra $400 to have the warranty. Those numbers are also the same numbers as APR Stage 1 on 87 octane. Now once I have APR Plus/Stage 1, it will only cost me $149 to upgrade to Stage 2 because of being a "loyal customer". Which APR Stage 2 will now put me at 246hp and 275 lb-ft torque, all on a 87 octane tune. You can get up to 247hp and 301 torque on a 93 octane tune. You guys seem like a reputable company and have really good reviews, so I dont want to bash you guys. But these numbers you pulled to show for APR are wrong (according to APR's website)!

    Just saw this video, and I think things have changed regarding the warranty covering the software tune only and not any physical mods. From their site, for the Golf R at least:
    "Oh, and you want even more power, APR Plus is fully compatible with our linup of Stage 1 compatible performance parts, such as the APR DSG/S Tronic TCU Upgrade, APR Intake, APR Turbo Inlet Pipe, APR Turbo Muffler Delete, APR Intercooler, APR Boost Hoses, APR Catch Can, APR Boost Tap and more as found on goapr.com."

  • @PeakDecline
    @PeakDecline 7 років тому

    It's the right idea but the execution is too limited. The fact I can't even choose other components from the APR catalog and still retain their aftermarket warranty is a huge issue. But the worst part is the price tag with such minimal power gains. I also wonder if the warranty is incompatible with APR's TCU software for DSG cars or other vendor options.

    According to precedent in court rulings, it is incumbent upon the purveyors of the warranty to PROVE that a failure is caused by an aftermarket part or software. A simple test will be whether it is reasonable to assume that the failure would not have occured without the aftermarket part or software. For instance, if your turbos grenaded because the oil pump failed or that the engine overheated because the radiator leaked. Is it reasonable to assume that if there was no aftermarket tune or intake filter that the failed oil pump or radiator would not then have caused the failure. If not, then it MUST be covered under the terms of the contract.

    The problem of course is that you'll have to drag them to court. The cost itself may not be worth it. Also, you contract may stipulate arbitration before you can sue. In any case, most owners are stuck with the decision of the warranty provided because they won;t find it worthwhile to take legal action. And, when you do have a customer determined enough or vindictive enough to go to court, they will frequently settle the case to avoid far reaching consequences of a ruling.

    So to what I'm understanding here, the APR + has the same numbers as Unitronic Stage 1 tune, and APR would only cover your ass for the APR+ tune, not their stage 123..100 tunes, that means, APR + is the safest, most friendly option to your lil EA888 3rd gen, which means, Unitronic tunes are more conservative than APRs. So, go with Unitronic if you couldn't care less about that 10-15 extra herspers.

    Seeing those numbers makes me think this is a cash play on APR's end to help them pay back the debts that they have accumulated over the years. Given my nightmare experience as a Stage 3+ customer of theirs, I wouldn't want anything to do with it

    Can I do a jb1 tune and just remove it when I bring my car to the dealer

    • @CapeVoice
      @CapeVoice 7 років тому

      No. No matter what you do it is impossible to reset the flash counter on the new models. The computer regardless will flag your car with a TD1 error. Even on a piggy back where there is no flashing involved, it will store parameters showing more boost pressure and fuel mixture operating outside normal parameters. They're making it impossible to tune these cars without getting in trouble.

      Jason Rothman remove the JB4 and erase the codes (if there are any), and you’ll be fine. The piggyback isn’t flashing the ECU, so the flash counter isn’t moved. Also since it’s a piggyback, the higher boost levels never get to the ecu, so Boost levels never exceed stock levels.

    I was shocked when he presented the APR Plus increases where is said the HP gain was 292->320. I wouldn’t pay $1200 for that. Thankfully, the current APR Plus tuning is 292->357 HP. That is much more reasonable for $1200 in my opinion!!!

    • @Osprey1994
      @Osprey1994 5 років тому

      Only thing that works is JB4 from what I know if you flash your ECU it doesn't matter if you flash it back there is information that can be traced. So stuff like the Cobb AP which stores your original ECU flash when you marry it to your car doesn't prevent you from being caught. It's really best to talk to your dealership first and clear it with them. If they aren't interested then maybe drive a little farther and talk to a different dealership.

    just a few things:
    test drove a base GTI S DSG with this software just yesterday at the dealership and it's pretty amazing. I really liked the power band...I can see why some risk adverse customers like myself might shell out the money for this.
    the dealer quoted me $1500 for this software add. so basically 1/2 the power of normal stage 1 for 2x the cost. they really have you by the balls with the warranty thing.
    I ended up walking out the door with a brand new Sport GTI without the APR+... had I watched this video beforehand I might have done it.
    does anyone know if this tune will get more power on a Sport/PP than a normal 210hp GTI?

    • @HaHaThatIsFunny
      @HaHaThatIsFunny 6 років тому

      elgruffo: the stage 1 APR tune brings all GTI's to approximately the same total power. You actually get more power gain from the non pp MK7. The horsepower gain on the pp is from an ecu tweak. The reason to get the pp is the better differential.

    My dealership installed APR stage 1 software on a 2yr old CPO MK5 GTI. They said as long as it was serviced there they would honor the remaining factory + CPO warranty. I think the law puts the onus of proof on the manufacturer/dealer to prove that a modded part voids the warranty (at least that used to be the case).
