One business that wasn't mentioned here was the Carlyle Quarry Tile Company. They made the tile you see on the floors of many commercial kitchens. it was made from clay from the natural clay pits in the area. Up into the 1960's they used donkeys to carry the clay from the clay pits to the factory. They couldn't find any machinery that could do it without getting bogged down in the clay.
