This applies to fishing WAY more than other sports!! It cost a couple hundred bucks to compete in baseball, basketball or football with decent equipment. When it comes to fishing however it costs thousands to compete. You can fish for fun for next to nothing, but it's more expensive to compete now than it's ever been and it's getting even worse with technology. Randy is correct in that fishing will never be recognized as a sport at the level it should be because it's not a realistic dream for everyone who enjoys it to be able to compete. With the way tournaments are run now, Im not sure that resources are abundant enough for the sport to get much bigger though and be sustainable anyway. I guess a real question is, would it be possible for competitive fishing to be more inclusive and control overfishing at the same time?

@@benonem I’m not exactly sure what point you’re making but if your saying that motocross and golf are sports that money doesn’t make a merge difference I think you chose terrible examples. Those are both sports that are much closer to fishing in the sense that whoever has the most money can buy the best equipment and give a large advantage. Picture someone with a 1995 unknown brand of bike racing someone with a 2022 Yamaha. The person with the new bike has a massive advantage and can reach top speeds at much better performance, the old bike simply can’t. And the same goes with golf, you can have the best swing in the world but if your using 30 year old dog shit clubs, the guys with brand new clubs are gonna out drive you every single time. Randy’s example of basketball is much better. Baseball is another good example of money not being a big factor. To go out and get a glove, cleats, and a bat isn’t that difficult. Especially considering you don’t really NEED the bat as you could likely borrow/use a team mates. All said and done you could easily be into the sport with good gear for no more than $500. Fishing simply doesn’t work like that. You can’t “borrow/use” a teammates rod cuz you don’t have a team. You can try asking a competitor to look at their livescope/electronics but good luck with that

My fishing boat is a 16' Aluminum alloy that probably dates from the 1950's. The trailer is an eyesore.
I care nothing for tournaments and never go out on the lake when tournaments are in progress.
The last vibe I want when out on the water is competition. To me it is incompatable with a relaxing day on the water with a good friend.
And as far as those folks born to high wealth I almost feel sorry for them.
Hemingway once quipped "There's only 2 problems with money. Not having enough and having too much."

Life has always and will always be an un-level playing field. People that can’t accept that ends up rotting their soul away. Instead of going around sipping hatorade, figure out how to better yourself and gain your own advantages. The most important thing I learned after 37 years in the military is this - life is not fair. It never was fair nor is it ever going to be fair so wasting valuable mental energy thinking, stressing about that things are unfair and we should strive to make them fair is a waste of energy. The elite in any competitive activity never spends energy on this type of thinking, its counter productive. When you were in your 20s were you thinking about whether is was fair that you had access to a jet boat and could get places others didn’t or some of the other creative stuff you did that no once else thought of? Why do you think those things you did got banned by rule? Because the TD’s thought what you were doing gave you an unfair advantage …

Good take on this subject, Randy. Having spent 20 years in the golf industry, I would argue that your premise is equally true in golf. Kids that come from money have access to the newest equipment, big name high profile coaches, access to the best courses and practice facilities, and probably the biggest advantage is having the money to travel to top echelon golf tournaments at the junior level. Can someone overcome those obstacles, sure, but it's rare. Another great subject and vid!

I believe you answered the question at the end of video. Surely, having no money worries is an advantage and being able to afford the latest and greatest is also a plus.
But this disparity has been around a long time. If it’s not trust fund persons, it’s the well sponsored competitor. Although trust fund person doesn’t have to keep sponsors happy, which is a job in itself.
Back to trust fund person, how many do you see make it year after year. I find in most careers, once these persons find out how much of a grind it can be, they bail. They are on to the next great thing.

You see youngsters in big bass boats running up and down the lake creating huge waves disturbing your fishing speeding to their honey holes they found on their expensive gear. And they've got their limit and videos by 9:00 a.m. and heading in. It's very discouraging what its come to. I fondly remember a completely different time fishing with my Dad back in the day.... Here is a comment and some personal experiences which are not intended to cause a rise in blood pressure...Fishing by definition is not a sport. It is a method of putting food on the table.Like hunting and gathering.Fishing is one way we as a species have fed ourselves since time began.
Tournaments(derbies) began innocently in our location as a way to compete with talented, dedicated local fisherman to establish bragging rights more than anything else.To have a man against man contest.Local clubs and businesses jumped on board to sponsor these events and in a few years fishing became a "sport".
My partner and I won our first derby in a 16 ft. Punt with a small outboard. It was the first big fishing event in our area and we were hooked. We had no trolling motor. No sonar or any other devices. That was 46 years ago.In the 20 plus years that followed my partners and I won and placed well in several trails and weekend events in our area.A tournament every 2 or 3 weeks was enjoyable, even if we didn't always win anything.
    B.A.S.S. was booming.Ray Scott,Larry Nixon,Denny Brauer,and a younger Randy Blauket among others were our hero's.
What ruined it for me?....When a 20ft. Skeeter with a 150hp was no longer 'enough'.When we discovered that groups of competitors were sharing their chips and waypoints with each other.Using guides, and their friends chips to get on fish..It was no longer team vs. team in some instances.
The sponsored business types with all of the advantages that go along with a no risk, minimal stress tournament experience had every advantage imaginable. We were one of the very few teams back then who were independent, and at the end we realized that we could no longer consider it an even playing field. It was no longer fun.
Also ..over the years we noticed smaller limits coming to the scales, on what used to be water bodies full of larger fish.Fish used to have places to hide...not anymore.
My partner and I decided that going back to fishing for fun,and the occasional fish feed was more enjoyable to us.That was about 20 years ago.
Got nothing against those who find fishing competitively to be fun.I wish everyone could experience the thrill of winning a big event, but it seems that only those with an enormous financial cushion will have that opportunity now and even more so in the future.
I agree with Randy when it comes to his pet peeves.Maybe stepping back and asking ourselves 'when is enough, enough' might be a good idea.

Agreed. Nascar had that issue back in the day. The ones with the most money to dump into their cars were always on top. Then they leveled the playing field by using templates for the cars by which the teams have to go by. I can't imagine how the pro tournaments could level the playing field that would be beneficial to the guys with less money. I could imagine the tournaments could suffer a loss of certain sponsors if certain equipment were not to be used. Then where's the money going to come from to make the championships the extravaganza that they are. I 100% believe in a fair game and I almost like watching anglers catch fish as much as myself going out and catching fish but that's just my view from the bank.

I hope you can bear with me here for a minute. My raising, Dad was a Korean U.S. Army sniper vet. Self-trained, refer to historic decision to the Army deciding to discontinue sniper training after WWII. Dad had to learn from a child how to fish, shoot, skin his game, clean his fish, on his own. All because life was tough and you HAD to learn how to track, read game sign, listen to sounds, feel the wind, EVERYTHING to become ONE with nature to become successful. Fishing. I transferred what I learned fron hunting and reading terrain to then "imagine" humps, creek channels, tree stands below the surface. Then explore the bottom with search baits and by concentration feel and imagine what was down below the surface. I learned to become one with the enviroment to be a successful fisherman. I had to learn how a fish thought. Fish physiology was important. Today what are we one with nature or electronics? Stick to your guns. Imagine how incredible now George Perry was! Now that was a fisherman.

The lower the cost to entry the greater disparity money creates.
Another example is pinewood derby. Money has made that so toxic for our kids. It really hurts to watch. I offer my workshop with lathe/manual mill/drill presses/sanders/saws so that anyone can have access to learn the mechanics and build an i credible experience. But some parents don't even have the abilities to drop their kids off and pick up two hours later.
Then "that guy" buys a built car with cheater axles and shaved wheels. The kid like the short dopamine shot of winning but the long game pride doesnt exist. There is an emptiness to their win that is palpable.
It ruins it for everyone in the room except the dad that wanted to beat elementary kids via proxy.

Your parent was a rich alumni that donated money the child gets admitted . Rich kids today get personal trainers and teaching pros , pay to play in advance AAU teams .
So this is not unique to fishing .
So what can be done ? We both know almost nothing.
Except people like you and me that grew up in lower to midge income houses without discretionary income - have to do it the American way - Work Harder , Work Longer and sweat and blood our way there .
It is satisfying to know you have done it yourself.

I don’t think data actually supports this. Most of the top guys started with very little however they did win big tournaments early on that made a big difference.

Well said Randy! I agree probably the best bass fisherman out there will never be known because they can't afford to do it! Sad with a lot of other sports too! It's sad that it takes money to be competitive. Fortunately I gave up the competition part ( I had the bass boat ) , now I run a 17ft with a 90hp and LOVE the sport of fishing ! I am a Canadian and it's certainly a lot different in the states but it is still the same up here too. You need money to keep up with technology to compete!

Very honorable of you to address this in a realistic and honest way Randy. One of the reasons why I love your channel! No BS, no extras and no sugarcoating! I love to fish for bass, it was passed down to me from my grandfather and uncles who were very avid and knowledgeable anglers. When I started getting a little serious about bass fishing it hit me like a rock that I was not going to be able to afford all of the gear that others were using for advantages to catch more fish and have an overall better experience on the water (boat, motor, battery, fish finder and all these other high end fancy and expensive electronics. ) My best chance at getting a real bass boat with all the fancy accessories and electronics is winning one of those 1 in a million sweepstakes 🤣😂 Going pro is pretty unrealistic for me right now but even entering small local tournaments is out of the conversation because I just can’t afford the proper equipment. Im not mad at anybody who’s got it thru daddy’s money that’sjus life (unless they’re complete a**holes lol) but it is mind boggling of how far apart the 2 extremes are when it comes to bass fishing. I will strive to change my circumstances and make a way for myself. Thank you Randy for all the valuable knowledge and information!

At least, I sure as heck hope not.
The kids with the decked out rigs are just getting an unfair (maybe) head start into tournament angling. They’ll either sink or swim.

Clear line between fair/not fair when it comes to available wealth. Shimano vs Lews reel, Okuma vs GLoomis rod, etc. As a bare minimum entry fee, a boat, motor, rods/reels, and lures to compete. There is no cap on it though. Inherently what comes easy or hard to individuals has a life lessons rather than what's fair/not fair with tool availability. It is discriminating to judge any individual based off of their economical status alone. As a parent I afford what I can for my kids. If you cannot afford what I can but we both meet the set minimums then I would say "do better", for your kids and yourself. At the same time I also ensure morals and ethics to having and not having so that it doesn't go unrecognized but rather respected. Now, if you want fair I would say look to the tournament holders and have them set minimums and caps to even the playing field. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Let's face it, anyone that is free from financial worries or concerns that if they don't cash a check they don't eat or their family loses their home has a huge advantage. To be able to go out and just focus on the fish and dedicate 100% effort to only that part of the game with zero regard to finances, would be the ultimate game changer.

It's more than just fishing. I played hockey with cheap equipment, couldn't travel when making travel team. Then you have Olympians, who has the money for a private coach and rent an ice rink for 2 hours everyday for figure skating or a snoboarder whose families packs up and moves to aspen so you can ski all day. Money is involved in a lot more sports than you think. To look away from sports I wonder what it must be like to go thru college without having to work 2 or 3 jobs or just be able to pick a medical school and have daddy pay for it. Some people just have it easier

I think we call this life! I was picking up my 2021 19ft bass boat two 10" screens and a 200. The boat sitting next to mine was a 21Ft with 5 12"graphs and a 450R. Yep disparity! I have competed against those kids with Family money in both fishing and motorcycle racing. I did ok, I was happy to do what I could, and you know as well as I its always going to be there.
