      @@tiannagraham5210 I feel like some people just lack the empathy to understand how much work it is to create a knitted piece. On the other hand, I knitted my aunt a blanket for Christmas with specified yarn that I knew she'd love, and she had tears in her eyes, in complete shock and awe that I took the time to make it for her. She even asked where she should put it to "cherish it correctly." Moments like that make the "less than ideal" reactions so worth it.

    My crochet horror story is that I almost got taken advantage of by a high school friend I reconnected with as an adult who made wreaths and cat toys to sell at farmers markets. She wanted to team up and have me make around a 100 amis (which I mostly make with my 2.75 hook and are usually ~5inches in size) and she was essentially going to pay me $5 per ami(I sell them at $8 usually) then resell them for $15-$20 after attaching them to a stick…anyways I ended up blocking that friend for a few other reasons as well, but this definitely was a deciding factor

    Wanna say about the aunt story i think this is a good lesson to bring up, never knit someone a handmade item unless they ask you for something specific. And this isnt to say that handmade items are a bad gift but you gotta think of why you’re giving them this gift. Just using a sweater as and example here. Do you give them the gift because you know they want a sweater or do you do it because YOU want to make them a sweater. If theyve never asked for it although they should be appreciative regardless you cant make them want it. Think of it like it was a item you purchased if they wouldn’t want the store bought version then you shouldn’t suddenly expect them to want your hand made version just because you put a lot of effort into it. Basically if you wanna make someone something do it for them as a random present and try to only gift things you know they want need or would use for those main gift giving events.

      @@Tfwcrochet agree 100% about being kind, it is a tricky situation cause obviously if someone doesn’t want/like your gift it’ll probably show up sooner or later which can hurt but idk philosophical question here. Is it better to be told straight up that they dont like your gift and never make them anything again or to find out years later by seeing them either never use it, regift it, or (hopefully not) throw it away. After youve made them more because they feigned a positive reaction.

    With a lot of these rejection stories I wonder if they're not fond of turn style crochet work.
    Since most fabric goods are machine knit, many people are unknowingly predisposed to like the visual appearance of front facing stitches.
    Often times, if the same item is done in a similar Tunisian Crochet style, crochet in the round, Row and cut crochet style (each row is made then cut from the supply, and restarted on the hook hand side of the project.), or ambidexterity made (switching every row between right and left hands.), that same person will love the item they originally thought was ugly.
    Honestly, it's sorta spooky how ingrained front facing stiches is apart of our layman fiber culture.

    I had the same thing hapen to me as the first story when I was in elementary school, but on one hand I was doing embroidery instead of crochet so what they took away was a sewing needle and I don't live in the states so the "children bringing weapons to school" thing isn't something that is a big worry. And the classmate that told on me to the teacher was annoyed that I was crafting on my free time in class and never got in trouble when he was getting in trouble constantly. The teacher, to be fair, took my only needle, and then lost it and couldn't give it back. I had to go to my mom to ask her to get me a new needle to finish the project and I never took crafts to school again. Before I had taken crochet and knitting to school and no one batted an eye, which may be why my classmate was upset. The main difference is that he disturbed other students and was noisy and didn't finish his pork when I only took my crafts out when I was done and disturbed no one.
    And I had a story with my one and only knitting project and my grandma that is kind of like the aunt story. I knitted her a huge scarf, in red white and green because it was a christmas gift and my parents (who were buying the yarn, all poliester we found in our closest stationary store and not very high quality) thought it was a good idea. It was as thick and tall as I was at the time, and I was about 10 years old for reference. And because it was so big it took me forever to finish. Come christmas my grandma accepted it, put it on, and at the time I was pleased. She wore it the next christmas and then never wore it again. Then a couple of years later when I was better at crochet I crocheted her wine glass coasters, and she was like "I'll use them more on mugs". I was a bit disappointed but let it go. I never saw her actually use them.
    A couple of years go by and in a dinner with the whole family she started to mock the scarf, saying that he colors were ugly, the yarn was scratchy and it was uncomfortable, and she only wore it to humor me. All of this to my face and in front of not only relatives but also her friends. She obviously thought it was funny but I was hearbroken. Months of effort and hard work and she though not only that it was terrible but that it was a funny thing to mock in public to my face. And then I kept on thinking of the coasters and how she must not have even bothered to keep them as I never saw her use them, and how she likely also threw out the scarf after a bit as I hadn't seen it in years. I was so hurt that I promised myself I wouldn't make gifts for others ever again.
    This year my mom has been hounding me to make her something again, and after so many "no" she hadn't heeded I told her I'd do it if she buys the yarn. She very much doesn't want to do that and my dad doesn't either even though he likes the idea of me making a handmade gift to his mom, and I know that the won't do that, so after a couple of "you buy the yarn and I'll put the effort" she has stopped. The only people tha will get the effort are those that actually appreciate the time and labor handmade takes, and even then I may have them buy the yarn for whatever it is I'm making for them.

    My mother in law does this thing where she rotates one person she either forgets to buy a gift for, or it's just the cheapest most thoughtless gift possible. Like dollar store kitchen hand towels that don't go with their decor at all. Sometimes though like this year apparently, she will be digging through her hoard and offer you something with the explanation that if you're willing to accept said gift early, it will be your Christmas gift that you're getting early. So last week she calls and offers me her yarn stash from when she used to do crafts. Not wanting to seem ungrateful and always encouraging her to pare down her hoard I said sure. Girl.. She sends my father in lae over with 3 grocery bags of some of the ugliest dirtiest acrylic yarn. Im talking some of it had gotten wet and was stained still skeined up, some just had bits of leaves and mouse poo, dry rot because it had obv been exposed to the elementars... I don't even know. She feels like her stuff is still as valuable as if it was new, or that I should be grateful even though she would never try to pass on such things to most of her own 5 biological kids. Same person though will buy a load of tomatoes and let them sit until they are starting well into rot.. Then send them with jars to me and ask me to do the (gross) work of cleaning them up and canning them.. Then splitting the resulting canned tomatoes. Her money for jars and fruit I just have to do the work. Except I am fine financially. Im not in need of 10 jars of botulism risky food. I usually just send all but 1-2 jars back.. And she knows that. So obviously she's making the offer knowing I hate to see her be so wasteful. So im sending all but one bag of of yarn back that hopefully isn't too bad.. People are weird.

    I would never tell someone I think their project is ugly, even if I think it is... The thing is, we ALL have our opinions, our personal tastes. Something I find beautiful, someone else may not like. I may say that something doesn't fit in with my personal tastes... and that's okay... because we are all different. I, personally, have been crocheting off and on since I was 8... I'm 56 now, and I was originally taught by a babysitter that was in college at the time. Never had to deal with crochet hooks being taken away as a weapon, but I lived most of my life in a much simpler time.
    For the crochet related injury... I can actually relate to this one. I have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in both of my wrists, so I can't crochet for long periods of time like I used to. At one point I used to do a LOT of crochet work for other people (think commissioned work), and I just can't do it anymore. I only take on 1 or 2 commissioned projects a year, now, depending on what it is. I have, however, found a new way to hopefully make extra money with my crocheting. I got into writing my own patterns. This allows me to crochet at my own pace. I write up the patterns I create, send it to an editor, then test the written pattern, all so I can sell my crochet patterns. It just so happens that I'm currently working on a commissioned project that will become a sellable pattern in the end.
    As for your own horror story... This one is kind of touchy all the way around. As I said, I design my own patterns for sale as well. I don't mind if people make and sell the PRODUCT, in fact I do give permission in all of my patterns to do so. I DO state, in each of my patterns not to give, share or sell THE PATTERN, as it is copywrite infringement and theft of my intellectual property. Now, the person you mentioned that saw your photo, and worked out a pattern for herself, I hate to say, is not actually copywrite infringement UNLESS you have a copywrite on the product itself. That's actually more she was inspired by your image, and decided to create one of her own. Unless it matches your design exactly, it's not copywrite. As for the moral implications, that's where we end up in gray areas and muddy waters. We have ALL been inspired by ideas we see. For example... I've seen pattern designs for sweaters and thought they would make fantastic blankets. I've turned blanket stitch patterns into ponchos, or curtains. I've taken a base pattern, and changed it up, introducing different borders, or maybe combining one stitch pattern with another. I'm not producing the same project and calling it mine. If I remember where I saw the design, I will give that person credit, but what if I've seen a particular pattern idea from more than one person? Like I said before, muddy waters there.

    Sometimes if the yarn has been stored for a while the ball band can fall apart on the glued edge. It's possible this is what happened. Also long term storage can cause the outside surface of the yarn can become slightly felted, it's still usable, but you may have to waste the outer strands of the ball or skein. When someone copies your designs without permission, it's a breech of intellectual copyright and you can sue. You have to prove that your pattern was offered for sale first.

    I want to share my horror story. I am on a tight budget now. I bought 3 balls of wonderful yarn at a local yarn store, in order to start crocheting a cardigan, then estimate the amount consumed, and later order the exact amount of more yarn balls I need. Later it turned out that this color has been discontinued by the producer, Katia, without mentioning that on their website on that yarn page. This is so painful. Now I have to frog it and to do something else with this yarn. And to find enough of some other yarn for my dream cardigan.

      I was thinking this same thing when I heard that particular story. The aunt definitely did not respond in a kind or appropriate way, but the first question that came to my mind when I heard that story was whether there was an obvious texture that was off putting to her. I personally find any animal fibers intolerably itchy, so even if I loved the look of a sweater someone made for me, if I could tell just by touching it that it was made with wool, mohair, or anything like that, it would give me an instant, involuntary ick reaction.

    The copying thing is so tricky. I was recently really mad at this "loaf cat" design all over instagram because I had seen and created (for myself) a loaf cat that was nearly identical to this one, but made by someone else. It was made YEARS ago, and I just couldn't tell if it was a case of them creating a loaf cat from their mind and happened to look similar, or if they saw it and made one. They have other "loaf" animals so I didn't comfortable saying "hey this design looks a lot like this other one just with some tiny tweaks" but it still grinds my gears. I know that the loaf cat design isn't so incredibly intricate and unique that it MUST have been copied. It easily could be a genuine coincidence. This stuff is hard, and I think there's not really much you can do unless the pattern is exactly yours. Or if, like in your case, they admit to having taken your design specifically to sell without your permission.

    • @Tfwcrochet
      @Tfwcrochet  4 місяці тому

      It is SOOOO tricky. I have unfollowed some people over the years because I feel like there’s no way they didn’t at the very least replicate something from a photo to compete with an already popular design. I know there are limited unique designs out there but sometimes it’s obvious people are copying.

    • @FlareHeart
      @FlareHeart 4 місяці тому +3

      @@Tfwcrochet Being inspired by someone's photo and having the skills to replicate it for yourself is NOT a bad thing. I know it feels morally icky, but there's only so many ways to do things in crochet and gatekeeping it behind "soandso did it first!" is not morally right either. It is disregarding the skill that the person doing the replicating has honed. It's not easy to replicate from a single photo. We should all be supportive of the creativity and skill of each other. Does it suck when you're trying to sell things that there are other people out there selling similar things for cheaper prices? Yes, absolutely. Is it illegal, or even morally wrong? No. Not at all. There are tons of people all selling similar things out there competing with one another. Competition is not illegal or morally wrong. You will NEVER be the only one selling something. Expecting to be is unrealistic.

    • @Tfwcrochet
      @Tfwcrochet  4 місяці тому +1

      @@FlareHeart eh I feel like you’re devaluing the fact that it takes the original person a lot of time and effort to get all the proportions and details correct. Sometimes that alone is months of work.
      I can replicate things from photos pretty easily. It’s a skill set I have. But I don’t take people’s exact photo and copy it and then try to sell it. I may copy it for myself for personal use but I wouldn’t try and sell it.
      There is a difference to me when two people sell similar things and when someone actually copies from another person’s photo like the person admitted doing to me. This happened back when there weren’t as many patterns out there as there are now so now I can see how these days someone could get accused of copying when they didn’t actually copy and they were just similar.
      It is a tricky situation and there are lots of different opinions on it but let’s take the example of a company like Shein who copies from small creator all the time. No one thinks that’s morally right so why is it okay for other small creators to do it to each other?

However her pattern would be slightly different from yours and the number and type of differences will be a factor in court. The more unique the stitch pattern-the easier to prove its your intellectual property. Amigurumi makers suffer because it’s all single crochets and the most popular patterns consist of construction techniques that are more straightforward.

    I had a PM on Ravelry and checked it out. They asked me where I got the image
    Apparently, she was the owner of the image and couldn't figure out where i got it. We finally figured out she put her photos in the Cloud.
    She was very nice about it and asked me to take it down, which I did right away. It could have been a very ugly scenario though.

    Eh, whether the student who reported the op for having a weapon had a vendetta against them or not, the wild and messed up thing to me is that the school actually validated it by saying op couldn’t bring a crochet hook on campus anymore. It’s so beyond ridiculous.

      I was the one who made the lockdown story! It was fucking wild. Our school was in a bad area in a small city in Ohio and we got multiple threats and had minor lockdowns pretty often. Because of this they take accusations like that VERY seriously. I didn’t even get a chance to explain until AFTER he had already destroyed my locker. He calmed pretty quickly after I showed him my hook but told me I wasn’t allowed to bring it anymore because “it would cause a problem”. I don’t really know what went through her head because I had never talked to her though I was bullied pretty seriously at this school for being openly gay.

    The gift story i find difficult, because it is really a gift if the recipient does not want it? I mean, we all know the feeling, right? Getting something and have to act happy because of social pressure but inside we are so unhappy because it is something we just don´t like. Of course the way that aunt reacted was rude! But especially handmade things are so much work, and we do put in so much time, money and good thoughts for the person, so we do want the other to be really happy. I just give crochet gifts if i know for sure that the other one wants it and will be truly happy with recieving it. Because for me, that is why i give gifts, to make the other person happy.
    The marketplace story, there are a lot of shops other than temu that have really good deals if you order a lot. If the scammer ordered like 400 skeins for cheap, put in that bit of work of re labeling and maybe shipping, they could have quite a profit. Like, normally a 6 $ skein of lionbrand yarn x 400 = 2400 $, but you can get more or less similar yarn for as cheap as 6 $ for 6 skeins, so about 402 $ for 400 skeins. So even when they sell the scam yarn for half the price it is quite some money for really not much work.

    Not a lawyer....
    But I think copyright would be for the written pattern. The actual product would fall under trademark or patent.
    This is why you can write about an orphan who attends a magical school and is the chosen one to defeat the bad guy. Rowling cannot sue you for that unless you are actually copying what you wrote aka plagiarism.
    Trademark is you can't make Disney characters and sell them. Because that is a violation of Disney trademark. I don't think you could even say you are giving it as a free gift with an order because you are still using their property to make a profit.
    But I just avoid it all because who needs that legal trouble.
    As far as your Dino I would definitely talk to a lawyer to see if you could do anything about it.

    On the facebook marketplace “scam” honestly it probably wasn’t a scam possibly some mixed up yarn labels but if the person was new to fiber art and didn’t know any better then the yarn was likely just a bunch of value yarn, unless the listing had specific fiber contents then they weren't scammed so much as made a uninformed purchase

    The problem for the student was not the crochet hook. It was the girl who said it was a weapon. If the admin thought it was a weapon she would have been expelled so fast. Also she would not have had to explain that the crochet hook was what that girl thought was a weapon. The admin told her not to bring it because that girl said it was a weapon, so someone else might as well

    Ok so first a little story that your story reminded me of and then my own little scuffle I had with a crocheter online.
    The other day I stumbled upon a Loaf cat tutorial on UA-cam and it looks exactly like the one that's gone viral. So clearly it was replicated from a picture. Some people did point out how unethical it is to do that but most comments were defending that person saying it's not exactly like the written pattern.
    I personally think it's morrally wrong and very rude to share a tutorial of a popular plushy to get views and hiding behind "but it's my own version of it"
    Some women was bragging about being able to freehand anything just from a photo 🙄 like first of all, being humble is cool, I promise you! And second of all, behind able to replicate anything doesn't give you the right to just steal someone's design and share it publicly.
    There are way too many immoral people on the arts and crafts sphere unfortunately.
    Now for the story. I was on a local artisan groupe on FB. A woman shared a collection of snow white finger puppets she was selling. In her post she wrote that it took her about 50h to make and I'm sure it's true because it be like that with cotton yarn. Only the price was so low that it came to about $2/h pre material and in Switzerland this is slave salary. It's just plain old unfair competition at that point and I'm pretty sure she could get a fine at the very least. Anyway, I confronted her about the price and the value of handmade items, the fact that she was devaluing it for everyone else on the market and that customers will start to think it's normal to pay so little. She just laughed in my face and said "oh I'm just a lady that enjoys crocheting" just make gifts for family and friends then don't undersell and make it impossible for anyone else to sell at a decent price.
    The worst is some people took her defence which is mind boggling on an artisan groupe. You'd think that if anyone would understand what I was trying to say it would be other artisans. I had to contact the moderators and explain my point of view and they took that post down but geez that woman was so rude and unethical.
    If it's hurt a hobby and you don't care about selling it a good price, just don't sell.

      Here’s the thing- I’m a person that can freehand things from a photo. But like you said it doesn’t give me a right to just make other people’s designs and sell them. And making a free tutorial of a paid pattern feels so icky to me. I’ve seen such mixed feelings on that one but I’m with you.
      As for the other lady I agree with you once again but it’s once again one of those things that people are so touchy about! Unfortunately a lot of people don’t want to buy my stuff because others charge soooo much less these days.

    • @WeirdSnakeGal
      @WeirdSnakeGal 4 місяці тому

      Yeah it's kinda disheartening. I have ideas for pattern designs but it makes me sad to know only a pourtion of people will be respectful of my work.
      For the price it's always hard. I did my first market on the 14th and I underpriced my items a little bit because my mum kept telling me people don't want to pay extra for handmade blablabla.
      In the end I sold a lot and made a decent amount for a first market but I wish I could have priced what they were actually worth. It wasn't too bad though but $2-3 here $5 there makes a big difference in the end. At least now I have something to base my pricing on because I haven't seen a single person talk about selling crochet from my country so what works in the US won't necessarily work here and vice versa. I went in completely blind and was surprised by the enthusiasm it received despite having a direct competitor right across from me.

    that first story from the high school sounds like a lawsuit to me. If it had been me my response to not being allowed to bring my crochet work to school would be: Ill see you're "not allowed to bring it and raise you to I'm going to do it anyway and when I'm using it if you even breath wrong in my direction I will sue you into oblivion for the embarrassment you just caused me, and I will win so hard that I won't have to work a day for the rest of my life if I don't want too and take care of my aging parents so they don't have to either (my grandparents adopted me in 91 so in my case I could have made that part of the treat in earnest) and if I were a parent and that happened to MY kid, you best believe they would be seeing my face the next school day and they would be tore into haaaard and given my families general response to how their kids get treated in schools by facility, there would be job loss. My mother has had several teachers fired for various reasons, there is precedent and were I a parent I'd be exactly the same way. Don't mess with my kid. My mother was a cute little super woman...she was feared. I miss her XD.
