It's a hydrostatic four wheel drive system. You have standard shaft drive for your rear wheels. (which is nice because it's rather sturdy and efficient) If you get stuck, you engage a hydraulic pump which then drives hydraulic motors in the front wheels. Hydrostatic drives are less efficient, but much easier to route compared to using a transfer case, extra differential, and CV shafts. The pump and motors completely disengage when not needed so they don't impact efficiency when not in use.
@dwndak You mean the 6x4 in semi trucks? In Europe it is a very, very rare solution because the fact of higher fuel consumption and higher emissions. By contrast, construction sites, gravel pits and mines, etc ... used dump trucks 6x6, 8x6 and 8x8. 6x6 semi trucks are used by military for heavy equipment transport. Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Poland.
Its been a while, but modern diesels use the urea* injection as well it would appear to be a derivative of urine, either way it does clean the NoX and soot. I've seen the stuff in mercedes diesels, that stuff stinks and if your car/truck runs out of it the emissions controls will refuse to let you start, though it does have its own fill cap so anyone can replace the stuff. Australia sounds very tempting right around now, with both the US, and EURO going downhill. God speed man
If you want to impress me MAN, try getting that wagon up the hill when it's loaded! My old Actros gets me out of quarries that are steeper and slippier than that with no fuss whatsoever.
these system only works on short road climb , if the truck have to climb higher , how long does the pressure hose could work ? with 4wd , i would be worrying about it...
400 kg is not a lot for such e vehicle Audi makes AWD on automobiles with low ground clearence , for Winter situations so a truck , especially for Construction Site , needs AWD / 4WD even more
jeah but the audi awd vehicles use more fuel than the rwd or fwd and thats the same with trucks so the hydrodrive is good because you have the fuel econemy of a rwd and the traction of a awd
I think this is to demonstrate how to drive the front wheels of that semi without having to install the super heavy axles and transfer case. That stuff weighs quite a bit when designed for a semi. This way you can reduce weight, and most of the weight from the hydro drive component will be directly over each of the front wheels. Plus you don't need a huge pumpkin in between the front wheels.
There's a whole load of earthmovers and the like that have been using hydro-drive for ages isn't there? Some trains, too, IIRC. Question is, if it's this good, and can obviously spin the wheels pretty fast (as seen when they briefly lost traction), why not replace the entire transmission with it? Alternatively, what's wrong with using a pair of electric hub motors and making it part of a fully integrated hybrid system?
@ndawg79 actually its not true 4x4. the truck operates in RWD under normal conditions. Once you flip the switch the hydrodrive pumps oil to the hubs which actuate the cylinders and set the wheels in motion. Its not a direct driven 4x4 like in a conventional off road vehicle but more of a support for mastering difficult situations without loosing fuel economy to permanent 4x4.
I think the biggest problem by the time would be to get parts for the truck, and the lack of know-how at the repair shops concerning European trucks. But you can be sure that aerodynamics wouldn't become a problem, even as they look like a box, they still are very aerodynamic. At today's time where fuel is very expensive, aerodynamics have improved. And just think at the Autobahn ... if they wouldn't be aerodynamic and too much fuel, nobody would be them
@Andypan43 I think this is some sort of difflock type thing. Except the axles are being locked at the wheel instead of at the diff...if you get what I mean
I don't think you guys realize each country has their own conditions and the vehicles are specialized in those conditions. European countries are smaller and have more twists and turns ups and downs so they created a smaller truck that can easily maneuver around the towns and country side. While United States is more open with longer roads and usually needs to haul more so they make a bigger truck with power to do the task. After all both trucks do their jobs and were built for their country
Pretty much, yeah; advantages are less weight as compared to a full, regular 4WD setup, less fuel consumption and therefore more flexibility as compared to either 2 or 4WD trucks
So basically they took a hydrostatic transmission from a lawn tractor, scaled it up, and installed it in the front wheels. Not bad at all. Simple, and seems to work.
We need these trucks in the U.S. ,too, along with Mercedes-Benz, Tatra, and Scania.

bravo ..! this is one of the best inventions in the last century for trucks .. simple and efficient
To make a long story short;
If you get this truck stuck, turn the knob and you are unstuck... LOL
And bull shit

2:18 motorbike sound. Star of the video.
Nothing to be surprised, coming from the land of the technical perfection...
That is a really smart solution to this issue. Well done MAN!
Gewaltiges Patent, wirklich schön umgesetzt!

Geile Sache ! so ein Hydrodrive braucht man glaubich oft :)
Didn't understand a word said, but it looks cool
the reducing front axes means reducing 400kg for each truck. This is really cool thing i ever seen.
we have this beautiful TRUCKS IN AUSTRALIA
This truck is the MAN! Seriously!
Also ich weiss neda, des is ufach GENIAL! Leute!!!

Very good idea, an all wheel drive without the weight, when you need it

smart idea division of volvo
Welchen LKW haben sie beim Dreh verwendet. Achso, sehr gutes Video! Lg. hannes
is verry good
Well thats pretty cool. I dont know what he said. However it wasnt that hard to understand by pictures. He was talking about locking hubs and 4x4.
Interessante technik!
the purpose of video was to show an example of a real situation and how systems works.
Gut im Winter.

@Andypan43 ahah right! but i think that hydrodrive is a sort of 4x4 i think..look at 2:12..the front wheel spins and isn't common for other trucks
harika! büyük kolaylık.
great idea

This system is basically an emergency four wheel drive?

bus dump is same. TRANSPORT.

I was a MAN salesman and the Hydrodrive was already sold in 2006... At this time, Renault didn't have any system like this...
This looks like a R/C truck!
urban legend: the man who thought the cruise control in his trailer was an autopilot...
Awesome idea/design. Wonder how bad that repair bill will be when this system fails....

New Kraz 6x6 costs less than this system alone and can haul battle tanks with ease :D Old Kraz costs even less and is equally good.
very nice
Hallo, was meinst du? MAN
It is a hydrostatic transmission. The new invention of MAN will already exist decades ....Lolll
coole sache
warum baut man dann nicht gleich nen allrad rein?
Pretty much, yeah;
advantages are less weight as compared to a full, regular 4WD setup, less fuel consumption and therefore more flexibility as compared to either 2 or 4WD trucks
MAN klass Germany
best truck

It's not a true 4WD but it can be like a 4WD!
Don't you have an english version of that?

Not bad idea, on the asphalt saves energy, but now try fully loaded impossible with 4x4 and 4h4 at this situation drive in the trailer (maybe help)
@Andypan43 I do not understand the words but from the diagrams and the video I assume it is a hydraulic driven front wheel drive.
VERRY GOOD
cool,it has a presurized that powers the front wheels.mack is owend by volvo.
And what happens if the trailer is loaded? The 4wd is nothing, if the trailer is heavier than the truck...
needn't know german to love heavy trucks.
if you carry a fleet it better to have this Hydraulic system than a fixed 4WD. love my old school 4WD in my 1978 rig but recognized this is clever.
So basically you have come up with four wheel drive?
Why not simply use two electromotors in each of the front wheels?
