What a hero and inspiration to all runners in the RAF. I still recall my neighbor telling me the news that "Jonesie" had broken the world record. In 1984 I was at St's on a course with Kev Best (Bolton AC) and we called to see Steve. I was just a station runner (Marathon 2:44) but he still took the time to speak to me with advice. In Jan 86 I was posted to BZN with Mark Flint. What a team that station had. Mike Hurd, Deon McNeilly and a host of other quality runners. I then managed 2.33, but Flintie still called me joe jogger. Happy days. Jonesie "Alf Tupper" of the track. Keep well.
Steve never did or does not the credit he deserves. he worked hard and trained hard and the training sessions did were extremely hard and I did some of them with him. He did have an excelent coach in Bob Wallis. Hard as as nails.
The great great Carlos Lopes!!! Sometimes I wonder how things would be if for instance Carlos Lopes and Rosa Mota were wearing vaporflies, maurten, Garmin's, etc.
I This was my second marathon. Chicago was, and still is a fast course, but the conditions that day were certainly not perfect. Steve Jones has never gotten the credit he deserved. A truly great distance runner. I agree with "cesagabi," Steve Jones was a "real runner."
i trained with steve jones in the lead up to this marathon and he was on fire. peter jenkins should take credit also. Steve Jones is a hero to the people of Ebbw Vale and always will be
This man is and will always be my Marathon hero. True grit. True talent. True, total commitment. Thank you, Steve, forever.

He was in the RAF with my dad.
Hey cloverleaf. I believe Steve smoked for 7 years starting at age 12 and left school at 13 to learn a trade.
Definitely a legend!

I pulled a hamstring watching this
I believe the commentators are Australian. And yes, Britain has sports commentators. I believe this will have been an Australian broadcast.
S.Jones with 2.07.12, J.Smith with 2.09. 09, De Castella, 2.07.51.All three, nice legends, you know.
thx for posting this......someone should put london '85 on here though, great race between Jones and speading (SP?)
Fantastic running style.
That guys got some heart
I LIKE STEVE JONES.. NICE GUYY !!
Superman! pride of ebbw vale
Awesome runner. Still fortunate to run Pre-Ethiopia and Kenya. There are great non Kenyan runners who will get zero air time these days.
what about charlie grice? bronze medalist at youth olympics? that will take a lot of motivation
@mixedbreed19 They're Australian commentators, led by Bruce McEvaney...
3:00 : "they're all Smiths and Jones, these Englishmen"
And he's not even English.
Steve, do you know if Steve Jones ran in olimpic games of LA 84?... THANKS.
They are Australian...
@mixedbreed19 They're Australian......
By 1984 Alberto Salazar was already gone burned out!
amazing but true.
the dialect isn´t british, it´s australian...
Weren't there any black people in Chicago in 1984?
They hadn't yet discovered EPO.
Wasn't Alberto Salazar doping in 1984
