The original Shenmue blew my mind as a 13 year old kid back in the day. I had never played a game so “real”, with such a vast living breathing world. I spent a lot of my time just running around, playing games in the arcade, and collecting Virtua Fighter and Sonic figures from bubblegum machines. It blew my mind that I could do that in a GAME. Shenmue was revolutionary, kids these days don’t understand how magnificent and awe inspiring this game was back then. Still till this day one of my favorite series of all time. I love Yakuza too, but there was something more “magical” and epic about Shenmue that I can’t explain.
I can understand that, Yakuza is a lot faster paced and action oriented than Shenmue. Shenmue is more about exploring areas and talking to people to find out what to do next. They are similar but different. But yea get it tho, who knows, it might win you over.
The Shenmue games are still better than most sandbox nowadays. This is one of the closest things to the One Block Sim Warren Spector dreams about. Most developers are happy with just having an open world of size and empty space with menial tasks and distractions to be busy and joke around instead of an actual living space of significant things to do and discover. Skies of Arcadia gives me more adventure and awe in its rudimentary overworld than any trashy sandbox/open world today.
Regarding Yakuza, of course it didn't feel as realized as Shenmue, it started as a spiritual successor without all the Sega powerhouse behind it, not to mention the tone overall is almost the polar opposite despite both being dramatic. But with each iteration the team got better, became their own very distinct thing and now they're worthy of carrying the Shenmue name; sadly no one apparently thought about putting Yu Suzuki with these guys. Maybe in a Shenmue IV?
There was no game like Shenmue when it came out back in 99. Not even close. It was revolutionary for it's time and back then I was such in awe and had this euphoric feeling that i cant describe that i dont get as much since we are used to games that have expanded on the concepts that Shenmue first implemented. I was so lost in Shenmue's world and absorbed in it that it changed my outlook on video games. If Metal Gear Solid for the ps1 felt like a cinematic interactive movie at the time then Shenmue felt like an Experience that you only catch lightning in a bottle once.
Now that I'm older and have seen more games developed over the period of time and more game developers expanding, i dont see game developers taking more risk and being creative compared to games that came out back in the 90s. Sure videos games have advance more in graphics and stories but I dont get that europhic feeling like I used to get when I was younger as teen back in the late 90s/early 2000s. The only games that kinda gives me those similar vibes and awe from this generation and the 7th generation be The Witcher 3, The Last of Us, Bioshock, God of War(2018), Uncharted 2, just to name a few.
the legend same here 🥺
You and I were the same age when it came out. It still holds such a special place in my heart as one of the most fun I've had playing a game, It's up there with Ocarina of Time. I still remember the 3rd disc wouldnt read at 4am so I faked sick and Ninja'd my way to Virgin Megastore to get a replacement, I actually have 1&2 downloading and intend to play through both this coming week. Im so excited and Im 33, haha.
I always wanted to play Shenmue and now I finally have the chance.
Have fun!
Buddy, you are in for a TREAT. It may now have a few rough edges, being 19 years old will do that to a game, but it's such an incredible and immersive experience. I'm so happy I get to play it again, finally. And I'm so happy that other people get to play it for the first time.
Also you'll get a little taste of why the Dreamcast was so beloved by those of us who were there for those all too short 18 months that it existed. A console too beautiful for a world that wasn't ready for it.
Enjoy
Just do it!!! You'll LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
Let me give you some advice. Most people who didn't get on with Shenmue got caught up with playing games at the arcade or collecting capsules all day. And while that's fun, the story is really the best part and so try to stay focused. XP
Yakuza & Shenmue on Steam.
What a time to be alive.
Right!?
ɳɕɾʘ Wait for Yakuza Kiwami 2. This will be a fantastic game. :-)
I played all Yakuja games. This is one of the franchise that made me love PS even more. I have to buy Yakuja 6. Cant wait to play Yakuja 6. PS has so many amazing games that I'm broke.
Shenmue 3 gonna be a epic PS exclusive.
@@asifmetal666 I love Yakuja
Looks more like a port than a remaster...which is a testament about how ahead of its time these games were, Shenmue I is 19 years old, and still looks good.
What's really the difference between an enhanced port and a remaster? Next to none, i believe.
When you start messing too much with the assets it becomes a remake.
It is just a port. Game was made in HD for dreamcast, believe it or not haha
They made enough changes in resolution, interface and options to consider it a remaster.
Not a port, it's up scale = Remastered to look good on today's tv's... Shenmue on Dreamcast is not 1080p with vga. There's a bunch of fixes too... This is like any other ps4 remaster or ps3 like God Of War, Drake's Collection... It's not a Spyro Remake / Remaster or SOTC witch is a remaster but changed models.
Patrick: Shenmue was not made in HD for Dreamcast. Dreamcast only outputs 640x480. That's not HD.
You can get adapters that upscales the visuals but it's still not true HD.
my god I love Shenmue.
Amen!!
i said the same thing to myself lol
Yup
It’s the reason I got a PS4. I’ve got both games for the Dreamcast but my console died.
“Kitty”. I never thought I’d see part 3. I gave them £10 for the Kickstarter, just hoping it would actually happen.
For that I’ve got the game and a signed thank you note.
Skies of Arcadia next I hope.
Yes!
Shenmue will always be my favorite game series. I remember being excited to get it when I bought the dreamcast when it was first released and I played it nonstop. I hope shenmue 3 is worth the wait. Been waiting over 10 years.
Coming full-circle. That's how you end a good story.
Craig Adams
Boy loves Shenmue; Boy creates acclaimed Retro series starting with Shenmue; Boy gets a modern remastering of his beloved game.
So cliche, I know.
Shenmue 3 won´t conclude the story though.
Which is asinine in my opinion as there's no guarantee of a Shenmue 4 which would again strand the community with no conclusion.
I don't recommend coming full-circle. It makes a mess.
Shenmue 3 could conclude the story.
I still have my original dreamcast and shenmue 1&2.
Me too
Me three 😁
Same
me too
Ditto.
Omg so it so perfect. Thanks for the great comparisons!!
Cool to see you in the comments. You and ACG just convinced me to finally jump into the Yakuza series with your Kiwami 2 reviews. Bought 0 last night and I'm loving it!
wow the racist is here
@@GM-xk1nw Sega Master Race
DreamcastGuy are there achievements??
FraudcastsLies Stfu You don't even play the Dreamcast just go back to making fake reviews.
I'm blown away by how well Dreamcast looked
Even with all that shimmering and aliasing, the game's visuals are phenomenal. And they aged pretty well as well.
Looked?
Now that we've gone through the technical details, can we finally discuss the whereabouts of the sailors.
haha nice one
Do you know anyone who could read the language of Chinese?
When are you making another Video vro?
Where you at fool?
I'll tell you where you can find sailors, after you play a game of Lucky Hit.
Shenmue on the Dreamcast was a goddamn magical experience, one of the top ten games of all time. Spent a week obsessively playing it. Sadly got distracted during Shenmue II and never finished it. So hell yes I'm going to play the hell out of these. Shenmue for the nostalgia, and Shenmue II for some shamefully overdue unfinished business.
same here I was obsessed with it and beat it in about 2 weeks
Same as me, adored shenmue but never finished the sequel. Let's hope I can find the time to kick these off before the third game
Same here
Shenmue definitely was a magical experience.
@MusicMoviesGames yup.. It was just as good if not better imo
Played both originals on Dreamcast - I can’t wait to jump back in and experience them again. For fans of the original this is a no brainier, and for gamers who never got the chance, you have to get this. This is the game that started the genre. It’s unique story telling and open world were different to anything else out at that time. Also, if you like yakuza - get this. Yakuza never would have happened if it wasn’t for Shenmue’s influence. Can’t wait to FINALLY get to finish the saga with 3, fifteen years later.
I have no nostalgia with the game but I am interested to finally play them. :)
TheJD that’s fair enough. For me, I just want to experience them again before the third game comes out and it’s been about 14/15 years since I played them so $30 isn’t too much for both games imo, but by the time the third game has a release date they probably will be decently priced in a sale.
MoviesNGames007uk they’re incredible. By today’s standards maybe not, but at the time they were so good I played them like five times each at least. And they had like four discs per game on the Dreamcast haha.
Jamie Rorison
I thought it was going to be a quadrilogy? The first is supposed to the prologue and the second the actual start of the trilogy.
That's likely to be a problem for new players. As much as I loved them then; these games are so frigging clunky in so many ways now.
This video proves how awesome Dreamcast was, while running at a higher resolution, the Dreamcast holds its own. Thank you SEGA, I miss you.
I bought the original game at a pawnshop. Someone put it in a nba2k case and when I got home I was furious! I didn’t play it for the first two months! But when I did I was amazed. The graphics was the best I’ve seen next to resident evil CV and don’t get me started on the music 🎶. This game changed my life literally!
I think that was fate brother
Cool story bro
The mere fact that we're getting a Shenmue III points to there being at least SOME justice in this world. This series needs to be completed so I hope Yu Suzuki and the team can keep going after the next one until his vision is completed.
Sega ported so many of our favorite games to modern systems in the last few years and we should be really thankful, they do an excellent job at preserving gaming history and I really appreciate it
I hope people who have already completed this still buy it. Simply to show Sega that there is interest in it and maybe (unlikely I know) encourage them to completely remake it.
I'll drink to that
When I got this for my Dreamcast it was best graphics I'd ever seen. Was just blown away
played shenmue 1 and 2 last week for the first time and finished them. the complete last part of shenmue 2 is one of the best ending parts that i have played in gaming. i love this series now and i am currently playing shenmue 3
a masterpiece! best game ever.. played it back in 1999 and now i bought a new pc just for shenmue
such an amazing game, just the soundtrack alone pulls you back, love it.
Playing it right now, and it's pure nostalgia. One of my favorite games ever.
I really like the sound of the compressed voices. Adds a certain charm
Shenmue is a MASTERPIECE.
Can we now get Skies of Arcadia, Sega?
I want SOA: Legends... but with the considerably less compressed DC OST.
that would be the dream
yes with 60fps of course just like it was on Dreamcast. Combine both and voila master version
This would be perfect!
Alexander Vynogradov Yeah man, I got it for the GC but traded it in.
Stupid mistake.
I can remember being lost and having to go a certain route under some clouds in the airship to get to a city.
I loved the sky ship battles.
I tried to appreciate the HD improvements while watching the video but instead kept thinking of how amazing the Dreamcast version looks even today.
I still own both Shenmue 1 & 2 on my Sega Dreamcast with all the discs
Again, me too
I must say that this is my third Dreamcast and i have to rebuy all my favorite games...
me too. also xbox version.
Almost forget, i have the Xbox version.
same here
Yaaaaaaaaaass! Much faster loading.
That is a vast improvement to qof. Not waiting half a minute to load a section. I think this will definitely improve the experience and flow of the game.
I feel your pain, that was me 18 years ago.
Remember hearing the Dreamcast optical drive whirring each time? "Whirr whirr... whirr whirr... whirrr"
Ha ha, that brings back memories.
Accidentally walking out of a building was a nightmare.
Poor old Dreamcast. Still love it though.
Sh4un1r1k knowing that the story will have an ending will be cool as well.
I got it fairly late second hand so knew there was no sequel.
I can now give Lan Di a well deserved butt kicking.
May the fans, community, and rest of the gaming world give this beautiful series a chance and breathe life into this masterstroke of human creation
This is a good time to be alive 💓
played shenmue for the first time this month... honestly the best game i've ever played
Word is d3t had to basically reassemble the original from *assembly code* and used Google Translate for the dev notes, because Shen1 was written in a native coding language, not a higher-level one like C. THAT, my friends, is a lot of work. So for people complaining that the audio quality is still crap, or that it's not a full remaster with high-def textures and animation... give d3t some credit. They rebuilt at least the original from basic hexadecimal code.
It's a great chance to enjoy this masterpiece once again, thanks for the review DF ❤️
The wait is finally over.
Now i only need to play the 3rd game and i can die in peace.
@@drasglaf2333 shit thats true, i always forget that there were supposed to be like 7 games if im not mistaken
Dreamcast was and still is my favourite console I owned. The games were revolutionary at the time, had so much fun.
I remember buying it on Dreamcast and was wowed . Then got the sequel on Xbox . Great times it was
I prefer Dreamcast graphics. Yes they may look a bit more blurry but I just like it, I dunno. It feels real to me. When you clean up old games and give them higher resolutions and whatnot...then you start seeing the wrinkles. Some of the magic is gone.
You can disable the hi-res rendering & change the aspect ratio to 4:3 in Shenmue I & II to get the original experience.
This is the first time I've ever genuinely thought "damn, twenty years? Now I feel old..." Guess there's a first time for everyone.
Resident Evil 2 being remade did the same to me.
Would be cool to see a graphic overhaul remake for Shenmue like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash trilogy, but I guess this will suffice until Shenmue 3.
That would be heavenly if this was treated and updated to SOTC remake.
problem is both games you mention have a huge following and sold millions of copies whiel shemune is a niche cult classic
Some things don’t need modernising. This is just fine.
I'm hoping for some good texture mods to appear for PC to spice it up a bit, maybe some nice FX mod too with bump mapping ect.
@@wile123456 Pretty sure Shadow of the Colossus is also a niche cult classic but that doesn't matter because Sony can afford to do it.
Playing the original games on my 24" CRT, the graphics looked like the remaster. Modern, large HD TVs expose the flaws. Old CRTs would cover them up. Imagine how impressive these graphics looked 20 years ago. I was blown away.
The two major sore points of this collection are the aspect ratio for the cinematics in Shenmue II and the lack of sepia tone for the flashbacks in Shenmue I. I hope these both get addressed and fixed by d3t & Sega. Also, hopefully someone will mod the brands back into the PC version. Timex, Coca-Cola, Sapporo, Zippo, Sumitomo, Hitachi, Case Logic, get back in there!
Great video, this game brings back so much memories, games nowadays not so great as the older ones, hoping for shenmue 3
I hope one day Illbleed and Jet Set Radio Future gets remastered.
SyKo Silent
i hope too, for jsrf
JSRF is such a fucking sick game 😭 I've not played it in years!!
I loved Illbleed!
Finally, an HD port that doesn't force widescreen on cutscenes that didn't originally have it, avoiding problems like Vergil's disappearing library book in Devil May Cry 3 HD. >.>;;

I needed Shenmue back in my life. I wat hed so many series continue that were nowhere near as good as this in my opinion. And it cut me deep. The writing and world that they built drew me in like almost nothing else. I felt like I was trully out alone in the world looking into the death of my father. Which may have also been boosted by the loss of my father irl.
On top of that, getting a job and paying attention to time and managing my money was a big part of this game that I felt when I was younger and I actually give credit to this series for teaching me these responsibilities, since as I mentioned, I lost my father before he could really teach me these things. Looking back, these things are kinda small parts of the game and maybe nobody else thought of them the way I did, but they make me appreciate them more.
And since my Dad was a gamer, I wish he could have experienced these gems. I just know he would have loved them. So glad we finally get a 3rd! And a hd version of the first 2 on modern hardware. Definite buys for me.
I have very nostalgic memories of playing the first one at my cousin's house every weekend as a kid. By the time I was old enough to really comprehend how good of a game it actually was, I had a PS2 and had gotten rid of my Dreamcast. This is amazing news, and I'll be getting this.
I can not believe - the Shenmue on PS4 PRO. This is something incredible. ahah
Only played Shenmue b/c of the love ppl have for it. Playing it now, it is relaxing and special. Hope to enjoy it more
I couldn’t imagine playing this on anything besides the Dreamcast.
My childhood is back and its just right.
I’m buying this now, it looks incredible! Thanks for the amazing review, I wouldn’t buy this without it. I think I’m gonna have a great time with this, as this is clearly the definitive way to play both Shenmue games.
Rented the first Shenmue on Dreamcast and have to admit one of the best gaming experiences of its time. It's one of the many games I have plans to re-explore when I have more time on my hands!!
Now if only we can get a Skies of Arcadia remaster
FINALLY!!! I get to play this masterpiece again since I played it last on Dreamcast.
I love that low res rendering feel like playing my old dreamcast!! gave me tha fuzzy feeling.. ooh John btw you reaalllyy should check out the new hat in time dlc that contain the "Nostalgia Badge" feature. It basically make the polygon low and texture fuzzy.. feel like looking at Mario 64. yeah I like old stuff.. stay retro right.
Cheers my friends... Shenmue I hold a strong place always in my heart legendary!!!!
I'm happy to see this on the surface cashgrab remaster having had a lot more work done to it behind the scenes than you may think at first. There are so many crappy remasters out there. As you said, they really paid attention to some minor details that make it a better experience.
Am I in the minority when I say that I absolutely hate waypoints in video games? Instead of developing a fully fleshed out world that you can explore and understand where to go by observation you just place a big yellow dot on my screen that's there at all times and just tells you where to go without any thinking required. I tried to play far cry 5 without the HUD but then you'd do certain quest where they'd tell you go somewhere and give absolutely no directions or descriptions of the area. There are some games where the characters don't even tell you what to do exactly and the message that pops up on your screen tells you. We need more games like this, speaking of which I think I'm going to purchase this game right now. I've never played either of these given I never owned a Dreamcast but I have little doubt I won't enjoy them.
Like it was said in the video, it depends of the game. Shenmue relies heavily on dialogues. It definitely helps the player feel he's in a realistic world rather than autistically look at a map all the time, because there's constant civilized interactions with NPCs. But Shenmue's map isn't that big either so it's easier to use that style of progression.
It could be interesting in some missions in GTA or RDR though.
I couldn't agree more. I detest waypoints in games. I appreciate that a game a huge as Breath of the Wild would present many challenges for most players, but there must be some kind of compromise otherwise I'll just go in a straight line to precisely where I need to go and miss on on feeling and observing the world the developers have worked so hard to construct.
Dark Souls
I agree with you 100%, I've almost stopped playing a lot of modern games because I'm tired of the constant handholding and mindless gameplay. I wanna have to think and figure things out on my own. But at the same time it shouldn't be obtuse and frustrating. If a game has no waypoints, the player has to be able to look at street signs, ask for directions and use their own spacial awareness to figure out where to go.
Sounds like a horrible way to play open world games like Just Cause or GTA
Love the production quality of your stuff, John!
Yes it is much better then whatever the PC guy can do. (¨¨~¨¨)
The load time difference is crazy! It makes me feel like I’m zooming through the game
Brittney Taylor Easily the most important and noticeable upgrade to this version. Makes it much more fun to explore randomly
This video is fantastic. You covered off every single thing I was curious about as an original series player. Many thanks to you for this sir !!!
The only thing I wished they’d done is with the cutscenes they’d have made it so you could have a cool wallpapered backdrop for the letter boxing/black borders. I think that would have made it much nicer to view the cutscenes.
Put the classic wooden TV borders in like the SNES classic haha.
Thank you so much guys - picked up the PS4 version at launch, and it's great to know I won't be missing much from the original experience. Once again - best gaming content on UA-cam.
I lived and loved those years of Shenmue, first and second, in 1999 and 2001, when Japanese versions came out. I spent months to play and replay that absolute masterpiece. I suffered enormously when Shenmue 3 was cancelled. Now, that I am a middle age man, I still prefer Dreamcast original version on a projection tube rounded TV screen, than Ps4 and Xbox one remastered versions on full HD oled screens. Those old textures look better on the technology they were born to. I would have preferred a total remake or a visual emulator of the visual style of old TVs.
Love that you have started to adress 21:9 aspect ratio in your latest videos, Thx for listening!
Well whatever this is (I'll go with modern re-release) it's great to see a game that was such a defining game/achievement (and sadly overshadowed by the abandonment of the Dreamcast and subsequent leaving of Sega as a console maker) so few people got to play these games at the time even the original Xbox version I'm sure.
Finally every current console and PC will get it (sorry switch maybe someday) it's just so good to see something like this finally see the light of day.
For 19 years I finally can try this game!
I always loved the shimmering from that generation for some reason
lol, I'm not saying that I don't like the improvements.
Naa. Won't miss that.
Just got it yesterday for xbox one. So relaxing, so fun
Better fidelity on the audio is not required. The rough sounding original audio is intrinsic to the experience in my opinion. Nothing says 1986 like scratchy audio that evokes a dodgy VHS copy.
daibonehead Yeah there’s something wonderful, and I agree, necessary about the straight-to-VHS, B-movie vibe of the original games . I wouldn’t ever change it.
Now, the audio mix itself on the other hand... is way worse than the great original; especially Shenmue 2
100% correct
I'm so glad the voices are still the same quality. Really.

I'll have to get this on Steam.
Thanks for this, man, really enjoyed your Shenmue videos. Great stuff!
man shenmue 3 really needs to fix the look of the characters and animations, they should get help from Sega and maybe use shenmue 1+2 cover art to get their looks right

@@Zaitekno yea hoping so
I remember sometime in 2006 I had a dream about playing an open world game set in Japan. When I woke up I had this one word in my head "Shenmue". The same day I started to look for a way to play this game and got myself a used Dreamcast. Maybe that’s why this game came to me in a dream :) I got myself both games and played them non stop for 2 weeks. For me never before or after there were better games.
John, when you criticize some things like the clouds in the sky. You seem to forget, this game was played on a CRT TV. There was no crisp Flatscreen digital input. It was all Analoge! So many of that stuff, was barely noticeable, if at all. Like the lack of AA etc.
If you write your text, you should consider the technology from where it came from. And how it really was back then. Because you sound like, as if this game was made yesterday. And the devs totally ignored basic game design. No hate
Remember when Mario 64 came out. And people tried walk around the TV to look behind certain objects in the game world? I was there. Im a witness of technological progression, when 3D graphics no matter how ugly or low on detail. Looked like Star Treks Holodeck.... and peoples minds blew up, left and right.
You are right. The Crt masked everything so I really can't remember on my old tv these awful clouds.

Shenmue is the original 80's gangster saga. Epic series.
I'll be stuck in the Arcades, playing those SEGA Classics!!!! Happy times... Back to 1985/6/7.....
everytime watch something about shenmue and remember the game i realize how ahead of its time this game was.
Ah, Virtua Fighter RPG. How I've missed thee.
Yeah, you mean the original Shenmue for Sega Saturn. Faar beyond anything the less powerful psx could handle. Virtua Fighter RPG: Akira's Story...
I was just starting high school when Shenmue 1 dropped, and I remember clearly how real the hype had been leading up. There just wasn't anything like it. Grand Theft Auto 3 was still two years away, though it intended to model a larger, more macro-level world.
Please do Street Fighter 3 one day
A DF Retro on the Street Fighter series would be awesome!
I'd watch a DF Retro on the Street Fighter Alpha series, but on Street Fighter 3 I think the Dreamcast port is arcade perfect so there is no point.
To be honest, there are so many amazing games on the Dreamcast... It would take very long to rerelease them (but I'm hopeful!).
An absolutely brilliant look and much appreciated.
How many FPS? Forklifts Per Second?
Best comment!
I'd love to have some of Digital Foundry's forklift analysis tools
IT'S OVER 9000!
I’m obsessed with Shenmue since day one
I would have liked John have made a proper PS4 vs Xbox One comparison or even Pro/X vs base consoles.
The PS4 version that I have played (at the moment 1.01) has some problems with audio (sound randomly missing) and cutscenes (some appear black or on a still image).
John seems to have played more on Xbox One and does not complain about these (this version seems to be 1.30 if it means something).
Can Xbox One users give their 2 cents about this?
Thanks.
Nice video, really informative. Like that the PC version can get above 1080p as that is where I will play it. Too bad the video didn't mention how much controller support the PC version will have.
Tom Blake Yeah, they should’ve mentioned that. I can confirm that an Xbox One controller works perfectly when you plug it in. No need to set any keys.
16:05 I miss this exploiring element, yeah i know that the games in the past were less "open world" and then easier to navigate, but currently you even have "redskins" and "wallhacks" in single player games (farcry5.. what a shame)
New open world games is just an ilussion because you are being told were to go all the time.
Except maybe for The Witness....
Avith Ortega Yeah man, some puzzles I’ve just got by accident though.
The ones with the scratches I didn’t see.
It got bad reviews and it’s easy but I liked RiME, similar art style as lathe Witness” Definitely underrated.
It’s short but it’s good, and pretty cheap. I think it’s £12. It’s on sale it’s good. Maybe that’s about $15.
Worth a look.
This game series / story so needs to be seen to completion... Yu can do it Suzuki San! .
Who ever disliked this video has no soul
