I had one that I could *NOT* twist the top to open it. In desperation, I tried putting a line of glue across the stainless steel top, hoping it would dry and give me a ridge I could use for traction. The glue was too thin, started running towards the edge, so I quickly rinsed the glue off the AirTag with hot water. To my surprise, after the water had heated the AirTag the top twisted right off. Perhaps this trick might be useful for others.

Sadly, it was very difficult to rotate the battery cover on my key chain type of AirTag in order to replace battery. For over 30 minutes I’ve tried the suggested techniques mentioned to push and tried new ways to grip it sufficiently to turn the cover. However, it has not budged. Any other ideas? Maybe a slight design change to better grip the face of the battery cover might help.
I had the same issue with one of my tags, but not the other. I put a slip resistant jar mat under it and that helped me open the one that was stubborn.
Funny story. My friend, (in his 70's) was having a problem replacing the battery. I told him to watch this video. He did and was still having problems, so I went over to his house to help. I change his battery in 30 seconds. To my surprise he did not know that you had to take the AirTag OUT OF ITS PROTECTIVE CASE!
That was really easy to do it’s nice you don’t have to buy a certain kind of battery. You can get one at the grocery store. Makes it really convenient.
I thought it would be harder but the two thumb method worked instantly! Maybe it’s because the front side is sticky from having taped it to my luggage. Tip for anyone struggling: use scotch tape. Either side, just make it sticky.

About that "bitter coating". I tried a Duracell CR2032 and it did not work. Original Panasonic CR2032 put back in....works. Is the bitter coating on the label of the battery pack? I dug the packaging out of the trash....it indeed shows there a bitter taste.
Same here. Should have known it was too good to be true that I could use these leftover Duracells for something else. ALWAYS have to spend more money when it comes to Apple.

This may be a stupid question, but coming from someone who hasn't used Apple products in years (but is going back to iOS and MacOS in the Fall) do the AirTags send you a notification when the batteries are low or is it a guessing game?
