Not many people realize that this channel is the best powerlifting channel on UA-cam. I am an Italian powerlifter and here we take technique very seriously, much more seriously than pure raw strength. I am decently good in the deadlift (280kg-617lbs kg in the -93kg weight class in IPF competition), of course not even remotely as good as Bryce, but I think of having a fairly good technique. This (except for some minor things) exactly matches the way I believe that a sumo deadlift should be done. I just can't believe this channel only has 24k subscribers, you should have at least 500k for the quality of these contents... I look at people like Omar Isuf, Alan Thrall, Buff Dudes... And while they are funny to watch, they don't offer even 1 quarter of the quality that this channel offers. Those channels are entertainment, this is ACTUAL CONTENT. Keep this up, and again congratulations for this awesome channel.
280 kg sono tanti se sei del '95, pupi migliorare tanto. Lui è bravo e competente, e dà consigli molto validi, però considera che molto probabilmente è dopato essendo di oltreoceano, ed anche per questo ha numeri eccellenti.
Best Sumo-DL video tutorial that I've seen to date and I've been watching lifting videos for almost 3 yrs now. Goood Job in making this common basic tutorial video still relevant and informative.
I used to pull narrowed stance sumo and back roundness not keeping back flat and ended up stiff legging it (posted the last meet in my page). After seeing your deadlift multiple times its been hell lot better. nomore lowerback pain and issues on lockout.keep it up bryce!
When you described pulling your hips down leading to knees being over the bar I realized this was me! Thank you, I’ll be working on correcting my form!
Thanks Bryce! I'm doing sumo DL after 3-4 months since last time along side my conventional DL and hear tips from an elite powerlifter like you is very helpful.
Very informative! I tried Sumo today and can make ALOT of adjustments to my form thanks to your exceptional video. I am very happy to have subbed! Thank you Calgary Barbell.
This is what I needed to hear and see. Pretty sure I'm pulling my hips too far down and end up putting my knees slightly over the bar. Great info here man.
Thanks Bryce. As a dude trying to work on sumo deadlifts who hasn't done them a ton in the past, I'll definitely be keeping these cues in mind. Good stuff!
Even as someone who pulls sumo mainly and has been for a while it's just really nice to see such a well executed tutorial on the topic, very informative👌🏾
wow, now I know why lately I haven't been able to lock shoulders back at the top of the sumo. way cool and thanks for the info. also good stuff on knee position against the bar and path of travel.
Calgary Barbell yeah I'm not sure if you have done it yet but it would be cool to see you do the difference between high and low bar squats and the front squat! and once again awesome videos!
well I have been pulling conventional for a very long time, and I hit a plateau just recently so I decided to mix it up with sumo. I haven't pulled sumo simply because it was way to different compared to a conventional deadlift. If I had to choose one of my biggest problem is getting off the floor and where my shoulder would be positioned before the pull. I do seat back, tighten my lats and focus on the pull. But when the bar is to close it puts me in a awkward position, and to far would cause to much a lever to lift any higher weights.
As a lifter who has dealt with pain/swelling of my joints 24/7 every day for over 10 years I can understand your concerns and path. You might benefit from reading the article "The science where your pain comes from" by Dr Austin Buraki a coach and lifter you may heard of. The article hits slot of points that I already learned dealing with my disease, but it is based on medical studies and facts. Wish the best with your training and life.
Hi Bryce, great channel! I'm strugling with hook grip on sumo DL. I have short arms and, at lockout, my fingers scratch on my inner tighs and I lose my grip or cant even finish the movement... any hints on this?
at 5:35 you mentioned that if a person sets up with knees in front of the bar, the person might kick back their hips and stiff legged dead lift from a less than optimal position, but i can't see how that would be less optimal as it would be the same as a regular sumo deadlift from what i can imagine? i deadlift that way to tighten up and pull the slack out of the bar. (just finished a deadlift session, saw this video and subscribed by the way)
People say lift the way that's best for your leverages. How can I figure out what my leverages are? And how can I use that info to adjust how I squat/deadlift?
dunno why, but as soon as my legs are wide open i feel weak as fuck in my abductors. that's why i squat high bar close stance, weightlifting style, and pull conventional.
overhead camera angle is good thinking and only reason i clicked on this video....why does it look like in 1:26 that your knees are pointing/angled more outward than your feet....i don't know if that's a problem but it happens to me too? please, let me know if that's an issue..can be or should be avoided? thanks in advance
I'm working on my sumo deadlift but I'm unclear about the "tension behind the bar" thing, or "pulling the tension in." I understand I need to brace my core, and put tension in my lats, but is there more than that to this? I'm just not sure exactly what to do for putting "tension behind the bar."
So I just finished testing my deadlift and with piss poor form i managed to pull 530 for a single. lt was nasty. prior to this I finished a program and pulled 415 for 12 reps rpe7 with a flat back like 7 days ago. no early hip raise or knee lock out. I would say I lifted that amount so easily because I was lifting so efficiently. now I feel completely thrown off by my one rep max and even more baffled on what I should expect moving forward. could my lifts still be so inconsistent or could their be some cns frying carrying over from a heavier bench and squat earlier in the week. Have you ever had a really off day or where the rhythm or set up just didn't feel right. would more frequency help this? thanks Bryce I appreciate it.
Hey Bryce! I've been pulling sumo for about 8 months now and I feel that my back is in good position throughout the movement but I still always fail at lockout with good speed off the floor, any recommendations? If you'd like to see an example watch my junior provincial video pt 1 and let me know what you think!
Eh. I think it can to a point but you're also losing out on specificity if you train only w straps and then use over-under for meets. Hook grip hurts, and I'm a wuss, so I train and compete over under. I don't know if there's a definitive answer to your question, but lots of anecdotal info for either side.
How tall are you? With long legs it can be hard to fit inside an IPF comp bar, but using a deadlift bar can make things a bit easier on longer proportioned folk
I did at one point find it very useful. I did a training cycle where I pulled almost exclusively sumo, doing only light conv work to maintain technique and had huge success. Not to say it'll work for everyone but it did for me at that time.
Hey new subscriber here ,you have great videos ! I wanted to asked u something i would be thankful if u have the time to answer me :) Before 4weeks i had issue doing conv deadlift my leg slipped out on warm ups ...and after that i have so much pain on lower back, high glute ...cant squat or conv deadlift ...can i switch to sumo to prevent losing all the strengh ? How to work around this pain/injury ? Any specific stretch or rolling ?
That's really hard to say man. From what you've written it sounds like you may have strained something, so it would definitely be best to see a professional. A chiropractor, physiotherapist, or someone like that would be able to give a proper diagnosis. If you can do sumo without pain, it will help to maintain your strength, but if it hurts, you could just be making the injury worse.
I wouldn't worry too much about upping the volume. Just do what you can for now then slowly add in light competition movements and gradually progress them. You'll be back before you know it, just accept the process and take it slow.

Im gonna listen you ! :) Thank you, wish you everything best about the channel and growing it up ! You will get the amount you deserve ! Btw do you have any video about your training program?
Hey Bryce, I have a lockout problem on my sumo because of my back rounding. I have naturally rounded upper back and it is causing issues. Do you think a chiropractor would solve this issue? And also do you have drop in passes at your gym? or is for certain athletes? Thanks!
it depends if the rounding is due to a structural hyperkyphosis in the upper thoracic spine, or if it is due to bad posture. If its due to bad posture, a chiro can help you with that and it is very fixable. If you were born with a congenitally increase arch, then there might not be much that can be done other than consciously trying to keep it as flat as possible
Hey buddy, I'm willing to bet we could make some strides in fixing that. It's tough if you have some postural issues, and yeah a chiro could probably help, but also just learning how to position your back could be a big thing. We def do drop ins, send me an email on my website CalgaryBarbell.com!
Never take advice from a kid with gauges.....It shows poor judgment....lol Let see Sumo???? spread your feet wider with the angles aligned with your hip posture and lift...you need a video to tell you how to do this people?

Calgary Barbell can't open my hips enough to get in a position worth pulling from

Calgary Barbell yeah I'm not sure if you have done it yet but it would be cool to see you do the difference between high and low bar squats and the front squat! and once again awesome videos!
Killing it with the information! Recently found your channel, I am using your free 8 week to peak for my meet come November

Thanks for the sub dude!
great information! been struggling with my sumo tech.
Any part in particular?

Excellent - this really helped me. Thank you! By the way, awesome ink!

Holy shit, this is greeeat! Really appreciate your content
Glad you dig it man!
Great information. Now we need one for conventional and squats
Soon!

Hey Bryce, can you do a conventional deadlift video next?
Definitely! Might even just do a vote to see what people want next.
Hi Bryce, great channel! I'm strugling with hook grip on sumo DL. I have short arms and, at lockout, my fingers scratch on my inner tighs and I lose my grip or cant even finish the movement... any hints on this?

When you're doing sumo is your weight evenly distributed over your foot or are you sitting back more on your heels?
Amazing content guys! Thanks.
Hope it helps!
Brilliant vid, a vid for squats would be great!
Once I get my squat healthy again, I'll have a lot of new tips and tricks for that one! Someday soon!
Serious question: will his ears ever heal if he takes out the ring things or will he be stuck with huge wrinkly holes when he's 70?
With that size of plug they probably won't heal. They could shrink a bit though
People say lift the way that's best for your leverages. How can I figure out what my leverages are? And how can I use that info to adjust how I squat/deadlift?
Excellent video. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Just found your channel! Awesome content! Subbed! 👌🏻😊
dunno why, but as soon as my legs are wide open i feel weak as fuck in my abductors. that's why i squat high bar close stance, weightlifting style, and pull conventional.
Thanks so much bryce!
No problem man, hopefully it was helpful in some way!
Such a solid tutorial brother, respect!

Glad you think so! Thanks dude!
great video, thanks!

I understand I need to brace my core, and put tension in my lats, but is there more than that to this? I'm just not sure exactly what to do for putting "tension behind the bar."
Now do Bench plseeee!
Well ok.
Great vid! How about knee pain after sumo deadlift?
When you bend down to first grab the bar, are you hinging at the hips or just dropping down and the hinge comes when you bring all your weight back?
Hey Bryce, when doing the sumo dl do you need to rotate your knees outward and pushing them back to achieve a more vertical back position? Thanks
So I just finished testing my deadlift and with piss poor form i managed to pull 530 for a single. lt was nasty. prior to this I finished a program and pulled 415 for 12 reps rpe7 with a flat back like 7 days ago. no early hip raise or knee lock out. Do youa know what would cause lower back pain during the movement?
This was really helpful :D
awesome. Thanx.
Do you find sumo deadlifts to be easier on your lower back?
Hey Bryce! I've been pulling sumo for about 8 months now and I feel that my back is in good position throughout the movement but I still always fail at lockout with good speed off the floor, any recommendations? If you'd like to see an example watch my junior provincial video pt 1 and let me know what you think!
I'll take a look here man...
Killin' it mane!
Hey Bryce, thanks for this video. Just curious, approx how tall are you? Thanks
does mixed grip cause imbalances/ twisting/ shearing of the spine? Ive heard pete rubbish talk about using double overhand with straps to avoid this.
ADAPT ONE shoulder imbalances, bicep tears blah blah, use hook grip
Eh. I think it can to a point but you're also losing out on specificity if you train only w straps and then use over-under for meets. Hook grip hurts, and I'm a wuss, so I train and compete over under. I don't know if there's a definitive answer to your question, but lots of anecdotal info for either side.
Its pretty challenging for tall guys like me

Nice vid and new sub from Fort Sask. You fella's from Calgary AB?
Currently yeah, although I (Bryce) was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Sask
Do you have any tips on widening your stance?
Why are you widening your stance? Wider doesn't necessarily mean better.
Really good video...
awesome video
What about long torso?
LOVE THIS.
thankyou!
You're welcome!
Do you have Polish roots? Nice vid :)
Ukrainian actually! Thanks!
Can you do a video on how to conventional deadlift?
Congo Nguyen he already did
I can do an updated one, but yeah there's one a ways back in the channel.
Calgary Barbell ok thanks! I will look for it. i just want to see from your perspective since I do conventional in competition
Somehow close to barbell brigade :O
Are your shins touchin the bar???
Boom pullin sumo today
As you should.
I'm a conventional kinda guy... grip dip and rip 😂

Hey Bryce, awesome vid! What's you opinion on the "2 part movement" like explained in this video? ua-cam.com/video/-819cFzPQeI/v-deo.htmlm4s
"and then you close your legs and do it conventional coz you're not a little bitch"__some random woman on the internet
Please go work on your insecurities.

Kevin - your mom DID love you. She just didn’t hug you enough. It’s ok. You can cry here. It’s a safe place.
