Have you ever dyed paper with red cabbage? We dyed eggs ( white ) at Easter. We left the eggs in the cabbage water over night and got a fabulous deep teal colour- so exciting. Am looking forward to using avocado and onion (red and yellow)
Those are beautiful, you could do so much with them. Use them as backgrounds to journals, make greeting cards, make journals covers and ATC. Have a great time using them and thanks for sharing Nina.

Just finished layering a bunch of these. Its my 3rd try. Still doing it with totally flat copy paper...not folded. I will fold it for a journal after they are dry to keep them from tearing in half when I o0en them to remove the soaked plants. All our leaves and flowers are gone for the winter. So I am using yellow onion skins and wild flowers I collected during the summer. I dried the wild flowers in a flower press my husband made for me. I dont know official names of the flowers but common names are Queen Anne's Lace, Rabbit tobacco, and a tiny yellow flower. I placed them in a turkey roasting pan. Its all I have that fits a full sheet of paper and is deep enough...lol My next venture will be to see if I want to try Marta's or the other video u mentioned. Gorgeous, every piece! I love even the ones you think are dull, they'd look awesome in a vintage-type journal. Ems idea is fantastic, beautiful results! I do believe the type of paper does make a difference. When this process started making its rounds on UA-cam, the first person I saw didn't add Alum and she baked hers. The next boiled hers and I had to try it! I got a couple of okay prints, wished I had waited and watched a lot more videos, Alum seems to be the key for great results! Framing them is such a great idea and some of them you may want to add a bit of water color paint to. Just to add a bit of color. These are amazing!!!!!
Ninna I did a course on Eco printing this summer and it was so much fun. It's really hard to predict what results you'll get and that's the fun of it. You didn't mention adding rusty nails or wire to the pot which helps bring out the colors too. For ones that aren't your favorites, you can enhance them with watercolor paints or do some ink outlining or doodling to give them more character.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the leaf print at 12:23! It looks like an abstract coy fish! I once designed an art project in college where I created fauna using flora. Your “Coy Fish” would’ve earned me a scholarship. You’re even brilliant on accident, Nina!

I don't mind the yellow but not always! I will definitely check out the other videos and thanks for that information.
I ha e seen folks wrapping their papers with wire that rusts and throw rusty things from the garage into the pot, and they get lovely rusty colors and texture. Your papers are cool, Nina. I haven’t played with this technique yet, but I will one of these days. I’d make a journal book with them. Just had a thought of putting in some wild blueberries.
Lovely papers! I left a comment on MARTA's channel if you would like to look, might give you some ideas! I also use dock , prunus, geranium and eucalyptus leaves, always reliable and leaves with lots of lobes and textures. Some flowers work, try Choreopsis and Cosmos esp the orange ones. And try red and brown onion skins and blackberries, mulberries, elderberries...if you live near the coast...red seaweed! I can't stop doing this, always experimenting and have stacks of gorgeous papers, something so simple can give so much beauty and pleasure! Ooh, have tried it on cotton and scarves as well, even covered a lampshade! I also took your advice for taking copies of your gelli prints and had some printed off so I have a record of results when original papers have been used! X

I have seen crafters use them in natural junk journals--making ephemera and stationary with wax seals, etc., and also frame them as you are going to do. You did a wonderful job Nina!!! It is all trial and error. I do subscribe to Em's U-tube channel. She never answers any questions from anybody. But I LOVE eco dying. It is so much fun to see what you get. It is helpful to watch video's from those who dye yarn with natural materials. The principle is the same. Alum is a mordant. It brings out the yellow hues. A copper mordant will bring out the greens. Iron will bring out the black. The bricks you used have those minerals in them along with other types of mordants. Try putting your bricks on the top and the bottom. For the copper, just buy some copper pipe at your hardware store and cut it into lengths that will fit in your pot. The dried Hibiscus flowers you used turned the water in your pot that purple color. Try sprinkling them over the paper instead. I could tell by your voice that you found a new hobby!!! If you wish you can look at my papers. I have them in my Esty shop. LadyLedas.

I’ve tried another couple of batches since this video and the last prints are fantastic as I’m learning to chose my flowers and leaves more wisely. I tried using regular copier paper, but unfortunately as I had expected, the papers tore and fell apart which is a shame because the impressions are beautiful. Hello Nina, Love your papers. I can see using the ones that aren't so pretty as background papers for cards or art journal pages. The paper with the fushia flowers look like humming birds. I can butterflies in some of the papers too. Lovely. TFS

You got some amazing results, Nina! I did this in early spring after watching Shannon Green and Rosemary Morris. I used vinegar and different rusty nuts, bolts etc. And very different papers, from printer paper to watercolor paper (watercolor paper worked best for me). I was so surprised; I got a clear print on every page! Even the texture showed up! I was so happy! I haven´t been able to do this since (my hands..) I have no idea why things worked the way they did, lol... Tfs, hugs, Fia

Oh you will have a blast Patricia and the results are well worth the effort. I have since made 3 more batches which have all turned out beautifully. Increased the alum and white vinegar to 4 tablespoons of each, threw in some hibiscus leaves, pink peppercorns and juniper berries and it worked like a charm. Enjoy 💕
I love these! I tried this as well and on some of the pages that were boring I took similar sized leaves and sprayed them with spray inks then flipped them over onto the paper so that I got the leaf veins imprinted on the paper. The result was a stark contrast that looks really pretty especially with the Dylusions shimmer inks.

Fabulous papers, Nina. I love the ones you ironed. That process seems a lot easier than boiling for 2 hours one and the results are stunning. The chrysanthemum paper is amazing. I think I will try the ironing process on some 300 gsm water colour paper with a view to making an art journal with them. Can you tell my where to get the Alum please Nina? Gorgeous papers. If you have access to grape vine give it a try. I "borrowed" a bunch from my sister and wow. Not sure why but small crystals formed when the paper was drying. So of course I framed the one she picked out for her. Peony leaves work awesome. The ones I did turned purple. I can hardly wait till next spring to start again.
Ooh, my friend has a grape vine. I’ll have to see if I can “borrow” some 😂. I noticed today that I have sparkly bits in mine. I think its from the bricks 💕
I did this years ago and have no idea what happened to them. I got very little color except from some deep red roses. I watched Marta too and thought her hydrangeas came out awesome. I love the ones you ironed too!
Thanks Debbie. You definitely need alum and vinegar to bring out the colour. I have done 3 further batches since this video and have achieved some amazing results. The colour is much more intense if the papers dry naturally whereas I started these of in the oven. I also increased the amount of alum and vinegar to 4 tablespoons. Nina these are stunning, I have watched a few of the tutorials on eco dying,, I have not give it a go yet, I wonder what poinsettia leaves would do, I saw someone put rusty bolts nails chains in the mix with vinegar NO Alum they turned out interesting.,... Not having a large pot is holding me back, I think a trip to the charity shop might be in order. OR maybe I can Iron them those are gorgeous I bet Bleeding heart flowers & their leaves would be stunning, Queen Ann's Lace
Very pretty. 🌺 I would be tempted to try but don’t have a big pot. If I used our big soup pot my hubby would not like it. I would have thought the papers would fall apart.
I have seen someone do this in a shallow pan and they worked well. I’ve tried 3 further batches since this video and the results have been amazing. I tried some on copier paper which took the impression beautifully. Unfortunately the papers tore and started to fall apart. Mixed media paper, watercolour and cartridge paper all held up fine though 💕
this is so very cool. I love the way your papers came out and you did make it look much easier than others I have seen. All of our flowers have gone now for late fall and our leaves are pretty much turned or are falling off the trees, I will probably have to wait till spring to give this a try. TFS this.

I have been watching for a while now. I had found ems channel through Gina Ahrens and discovered you had sent people over too. I find you so useful because you are based in the UK. I am too, so it is so helpful to have UK products. Can you explain about Alum. What is it and where do I get it in the UK. Thank you.
Hi Barbara, thanks for your lovely comment. Alum is used as a mordant, a fixative. Without it, the wonderful colours of the leaves doesn’t adhere to the paper very well. I purchased mine from eBay and it cost approx £6 for 500g. I have tried boiling with and without alum and it is definitely worth the investment. The white vinegar acts as a ph modifier as some dyes need a certain ph to adhere properly. I hope that helps 💕
I used 4 tablespoons of alum and 4 of white vinegar in my latest and most successful batches. I also added hibiscus leaves, pink peppercorns and juniper berries. My latest batches have turned out beautifully. Enjoy the process 💕

Gorgeous Nina, interesting to see the results from changes in the process. I think these would make lovely journal covers or excellent backgrounds for dried flowers.

Hello Nina, Love your papers. I can see using the ones that aren't so pretty as background papers for cards or art journal pages. The paper with the fushia flowers look like humming birds. I can butterflies in some of the papers too. Lovely. TFS

You got some amazing results, Nina! I did this in early spring after watching Shannon Green and Rosemary Morris. I used vinegar and different rusty nuts, bolts etc. And very different papers, from printer paper to watercolor paper (watercolor paper worked best for me). I was so surprised; I got a clear print on every page! Even the texture showed up! I was so happy! I haven´t been able to do this since (my hands..) I have no idea why things worked the way they did, lol... Tfs, hugs, Fia

Oh you will have a blast Patricia and the results are well worth the effort. I have since made 3 more batches which have all turned out beautifully. Increased the alum and white vinegar to 4 tablespoons of each, threw in some hibiscus leaves, pink peppercorns and juniper berries and it worked like a charm. Enjoy 💕

I love these! I tried this as well and on some of the pages that were boring I took similar sized leaves and sprayed them with spray inks then flipped them over onto the paper so that I got the leaf veins imprinted on the paper. The result was a stark contrast that looks really pretty especially with the Dylusions shimmer inks.

Fabulous papers, Nina. I love the ones you ironed. That process seems a lot easier than boiling for 2 hours one and the results are stunning. The chrysanthemum paper is amazing. I think I will try the ironing process on some 300 gsm water colour paper with a view to making an art journal with them. Can you tell my where to get the Alum please Nina? Gorgeous papers. If you have access to grape vine give it a try. I "borrowed" a bunch from my sister and wow. Not sure why but small crystals formed when the paper was drying. So of course I framed the one she picked out for her. Peony leaves work awesome. The ones I did turned purple. I can hardly wait till next spring to start again.
Ooh, my friend has a grape vine. I’ll have to see if I can “borrow” some 😂. I noticed today that I have sparkly bits in mine. I think its from the bricks 💕

I did this years ago and have no idea what happened to them. I got very little color except from some deep red roses. I watched Marta too and thought her hydrangeas came out awesome. I love the ones you ironed too!
Thanks Debbie. You definitely need alum and vinegar to bring out the colour. I have done 3 further batches since this video and have achieved some amazing results. The colour is much more intense if the papers dry naturally whereas I started these of in the oven. I also increased the amount of alum and vinegar to 4 tablespoons. Lovely results. The ones you are not so happy with, If it was me I would try as background papers - in a journal or as a background to add paint to or to draw on. What proportion of alum did you use?

Nina these are stunning, I have watched a few of the tutorials on eco dying,, I have not give it a go yet, I wonder what poinsettia leaves would do, I saw someone put rusty bolts nails chains in the mix with vinegar NO Alum they turned out interesting.,... Not having a large pot is holding me back, I think a trip to the charity shop might be in order. OR maybe I can Iron them those are

I have seen someone do this in a shallow pan and they worked well. I’ve tried 3 further batches since this video and the results have been amazing. I tried some on copier paper which took the impression beautifully. Unfortunately the papers tore and started to fall apart. Mixed media paper, watercolour and cartridge paper all held up fine though 💕

this is so very cool. I love the way your papers came out and you did make it look much easier than others I have seen. All of our flowers have gone now for late fall and our leaves are pretty much turned or are falling off the trees, I will probably have to wait till spring to give this a try. TFS this.

I have been watching for a while now. I had found ems channel through Gina Ahrens and discovered you had sent people over too. I find you so useful because you are based in the UK. I am too, so it is so helpful to have UK products. Can you explain about Alum. What is it and where do I get it in the UK. Thank you.
Hi Barbara, thanks for your lovely comment. Alum is used as a mordant, a fixative. Without it, the wonderful colours of the leaves doesn’t adhere to the paper very well. I purchased mine from eBay and it cost approx £6 for 500g. I have tried boiling with and without alum and it is definitely worth the investment. The white vinegar acts as a ph modifier as some dyes need a certain ph to adhere properly. I hope that helps 💕

I “stole” a pot from my mom to do this, lol! How much alum did you use? These are lovely! Would the colours return if you sealed them with medium?
I used 4 tablespoons of alum and 4 of white vinegar in my latest and most successful batches. I also added hibiscus leaves, pink peppercorns and juniper berries. My latest batches have turned out beautifully. Enjoy the process 💕
