    If you're curious about any of the gear or clothing you see in the video (I get comments asking about this all the time), there is a list in the video description!
    ALSO, DO YOU ENJOY SOLO BACKPACKING/HIKING? Why or why not?!

    Great video Justin! I also am a solo backpacker. Fourteen years of my life were spent in Latin America doing exactly that. Backpacking Ultra Light was impossible, as almost every journey was longer than 10 days and resupply was usually impossible. What you needed for the trail you packed in your pack or stayed home. Also, much of the Ultra Light philosophy would put you in deadly harm in lowland rainforest and in the Andes. Good topo maps were usually unavailable, GPS seldom functioned under the jungle canopy, and so the simple compass was king. There no bears, but puma, snakes and wild hogs had to be dealt with, and sometimes surly natives: Pemon, Choco, Quechua, Cuna and so on.
    Now back in the USA I have adopted much of the Ultra Light gear. So very much easier! But then again, I am 67 years old and have little desire to slog around the forest again with a 70 pound pack!

    I've been a solo camping youtuber for about 3 years now, and solo camped for more than 20. The biggest tip I give people about camping in bear country is to talk outloud to yourself! make noise. If you're afraid youre generally going to be quieter, this is bad in bear country, you do not want to startle a bear, moose, or cougar!!! Be BOLD in how you talk to yourself, to a tree, to a rock, anything! make human noises and smells! Be smart! if you find a dead animal GET AWAY FAST!!1 and dont expect nature to not be CRUEL! its not a disney movie, any critter in the wild will bite, scratch or maul you for seemingly doing nothing to deserve it. But thats about the best advice I can give about solo outdooring =)

    My favourite part of solo trips, is being able to do a hike completely at my own pace. I do enjoy group situations, and do most of my hikes with other people, but its often nice to head out and be completely selfish in my approach to a trip, when and where I take my breaks, and how quickly or slowly I get there.
    Definitely a good point about camp life being a bit boring. I like doing longer days when solo.

    2:55 - What you said about fear not overcoming you getting out there is key. That and preparation, and being safe. It's far more likely you're going to slip, fall, hurt your self if you're not clear headed. It's also much, much more likely you're going to get injured on your own than being attacked by a bear.

    Great content as usual. One of my goals for 2021 is to do a solo wild camp. I love both hiking and camping, but have an irrational fear of the dark, which makes this goal a huge challenge...

    • @damianrayner3171
      @damianrayner3171 3 роки тому

      I’m Still not a huge fan of the night but slowly I’ve moved into multi day solo camping and I love it because it’s helped me to get over my irrational fear (at least most of the time). For me I think the dark represents the unknown. So when I hike even with other people there’s always unknown’s anyway. There are some other risks like hiking in an area without good GPS coverage (dense trees etc) where it might be hard to find a place to get emergency support but I’m willing to take that chance because I love solo hiking so much. Maybe you could try by starting an overnight camp in the backyard somewhere getting used to all the little noises of tiny insects and things doing their thing. Sometimes it those tiny little noises that can really unnerve me but I’ve gotten through it!

    • @CDAFishboy
      @CDAFishboy 2 роки тому

      I did my 2nd trip solo and have 180 more after that. I had some pretty powerful headlamps when I started going to the Canadian Rockies ( grizzlies!). I had anxious moments cooking fish on trips with no humans for miles. I took mini lanterns in addition to my headlamp. I also planned trips for full moons. Of course topography and the time the moon rises spoiled that plan. Getting out of the tent to go to the bathroom is pitch dark is still the most anxious moment. To this day I appreciate starting in the Sierras in CA with predictable weather and no grizzlies to get me comfortable.
      Something not covered in this video is the length of time. It does get lonely in the evenings. I spend time taking pictures, cooking dinner, and planning the next day. Keeping food odors out of your tent will provide more confidence in going solo. Going with people that are not bear safe make for more danger than going solo.
      So plan a full moon trip, take an extra light, and avoid grizzly country on that first solo trip (if possible)

    Just a really nice enjoyable video. The views were absolutely breathtaking. Pretty much all my hikes are solo hikes. I work 4 days a week and have a lot of vacation time so I often hike in the middle of the week. It's hard to find other people with a similar schedule. But to be honest, I really enjoy the time alone, away from the world. I used the hikes to decompress and get back in touch with myself, listen to God, and generally, test myself a little. Even those rainy hikes are character-building lessons. Good tips in the video. I use a great free GPS on my phone and have an old phone all stripped down with the same GPS as a backup. I always get to camp early. It allows me to set up my fire and campsite so I can relax. I bring luxury items (a small speaker, my tablet for easier reading and bigger viewing for movies, special snacks, etc.) and that makes my time at camp alone more enjoyable and less scary. I've gotten more comfortable being alone over the years, though my wife still worries about me (God bless her heart!). Keep up the great videos! Peace!

    I solo 99% of the time... well, Gus, my Cattledog comes with me on all trails. All we have down here is black bears and they are more afraid of you than you are of them. We do have cats, and they do set me at unease. I don't trust them at all. I have to admit it is nice to have a human to hike with from time to time. Just completed my first backpacking trip which was also solo I’d say the biggest things were taking day hikes with a fully loaded kit to see how far I could go and still be able to return if needed (bonus points if it’s the same trail you plan to camp on), and even more important is planning/ reading up on trail conditions, a lot of blogs point out camp sites, also the satellite communicators are nice peace of mind. Ended up carrying too much food and water but in the end was still a success 🏕️ big thanks to videos like this and the vlog style videos you do on trip. Most of the worrying people do is at home, once you’re out there you’re too in the moment to worry about those things, just take the proper precautions like food/trash storage and make a bit of noise near some of the low visibility areas

No one else's feelings to consider or even their likes and dislikes. When someone asks me about going solo and worrying about things I always tell them there is three of us , Me , Myself and I. Myself and Me get along quite well but I likes to argue. Going with buddies is lot's of fun but to really get away , it's a solo trip.

    I have been solo packing for years. Just did three nights. It is getting right with myself. I have had many encounters with bears. You just need to have an understanding of bear behavior. Stand your ground don't turn and run. Over the years I have only had one occasion where a bear did a couple of mock charges. Had a few were I've had to talk to. This year I've had days that I've had as many as four encounters. I started carrying bear spray being a request from my family. Some backcountry areas require you to carry it or highly recommend it. I enjoy the solitude of setting atop a mountain or in some high mountain meadow, beside a distant lake at twilight. The things you can observe when you pay attention to your surroundings. Through trekking and discovering things about yourself.

Second, I find it easier to push more miles on my own. Probably relates to your comments about “keeping your own schedule”. Third, backpacking is hard and people inevitably get uncomfortable at times - including me! When I’m solo I can be in a bad mood and not bring anybody down, and vice versa. It'll be my first hike, my first overnight hike, and my first solo hike all in one! I'm definitely not rushing into camping in the Rockies, I've done it lots, just not backcountry. I also successfully completed a 91 days self-supported bike tour across Canada last summer so I'm used to traveling light. What definitely gets my anxiety up about this hike though, friggin bears! It's just the solo part that's getting to me I think. I flip flop between super confident and freaked out! haha. Only one way to get over it though and that's why I booked!!

      As with most things you start small. Start one or two nights in your backyard. If you don’t have a yard, find a local camp ground. This will give you an idea is what gear you are missing and how to use your gear. As you get comfortable walking with your pack loaded, you can venture to longer trails. You don’t have to start out in the backcountry.

    Can you do a hike at Lake Louise? I'm so infatuated by that area. It looks so stunning in pictures. Actually any of those turquoise colored glacial lakes are intriguing; morraine lake, peto lake, hector lake, etc.

    I don't track myself with my phone. I go in with a full charge. It stays off at all times except for informing my location once a day and contacting emergency medical services if needed to. Tracking apps drain battery. I put the cell phone's number on the bottom of my tent. Even better is to bring tyvek as a tent bottom protector. Double it up, I know its heavier, but this makes the number bigger. Its used to put those flying aircraft in communication where I'm at on the ground if needed. Using a signal mirror also grabs their attention up there to look down and see the phone number. This gives you more options to get help from besides just those wilderness beacon buttons you push for help. I suggest keeping the phone off and not just airplane mode on, to conserve battery for only these reasons.

      Almost 100% of the time I am in the backcountry, I don't have cell services, so satellite communication is the only way to have contact with anyone.

    I did not see an ebike ending coming. My guess was either a very long gravel boot slide to skip a lot of trail or maybe there was water that you were going to paddle or float down somehow

    Thanks for commenting on Redundancy for Solo trips!! One good saying I have heard is that for your life-saving or survival-dependant gear..... One is None. As in; if it breaks or fails you are SOL. so bring a backup of your most precious items is SUCH a good (potentially life-saving) lesson to teach!
    How would you give advice to someone who wants to make a Solo camping and outdoors channel but lives in the city (Toronto) and I don't have access to a car all-year long?

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      A great saying! My advice for a channel would be to focus on your scenario and story. I'm sure there are a ton of other people out there in the exact same situation as you who would love to experience content about that.

    One thing about bears is that we aren't really on their menu. If a bear is after you to eat you, something has probably gone wrong in that bears recent life. Usually they attack when you stumble upon them and surprise them or their cubs. So if you do something to make your presence known before you're within their range they'll usually just wander away. Fill a metal altoids can with pebbles so it jangles while you walk, some people sing down the trail, and as annoying as the Bluetooth hikers might be, they probably have the most relaxing method. I guess filming a UA-cam video also does the trick. Lol

    Dude!!! I subbed to your channel. Yes. I totally agree with the backpacks. I have a backpack for everything from work to hiking and backpacking. Also have my 2 briefcases that I take with me when I want one or the other I take them for work but I have a backpack for everything. Whether it is for work visiting friends and family or everything else. The backpack is a wonderful thing to have and their for sure is a backpack for everything. From work commuter backpacks to hiking day packs for hiking and backpacking backpacks. I even bought another backpack which is a hydration backpack.

    Honestly, the only scary thing is the first few times you’re walking in the dark with just a headlamp. If you’re not used to the dark, every little noise is going to have you on edge, you’re going to be thinking about scary things and seemingly manifesting faces or people in the dark because of your thoughts. On top of that, it’s really easy to get lost. I was walking on a trail I’m on fairly regularly the other day and thought a little trail that veered off was my path, so I took it and ended up in dense brush. I then tried to convince myself I was on the right path and continued to get deeper into the brush until I realized I lost the trail. For 10 minutes I was frantically looking around and walking in random directions getting more and more lost. I stopped, took a deep breath, and decided to backtrack then I found the path I was supposed to be on. Darkness is really the hardest part.
