Dylan wrote this song back in 1963; yet it feels as though it was written for the society and the world we live in today. No wonder the man was given a Nobel Prize for literature.

As brilliant as he was, Dylan was a product of his time and his words on this song echoed the mood of young people in every era. The sad thing is, things never truly change. There are occasional small victories but the rich and the privileged keep getting richer and more isolated from the misery their greed produces. That is simply human nature. We need the elite to provide employment for the masses but the very nature of being elite means stifling any compassion one may possess. So we may as well enjoy the music, live for the moment and take our pleasures when they come. But don't tell the young for we all need their energy and sense of justice and rebellion to remind us of how alive we used to be.

American Conservatives really. From an Americans POV. And what blows my mind is my grandad didn’t want my dad listening to this song because it had “too radical a message” can you believe it? And as culture shifts and moves on we still see the old folks clinging to nostalgia, cursing young folks and how they’re “ruining traditional values” trying to legislate around the changes young folks are brining with them, all while not seeing that their previous generation did the same to them. My dad loves this song. So do I. It’s still very relevant.

I believe an important takeaway is that no matter what happen, the world will change. your childhood will change, what you were comfortable with growing up will change, and you too will have to change. I would like to read a young person's report on Dylan if just to see how he translated through time. I hope you captured a little bit of the flavor of that era. It was raw and like a wave.
@Kurt Standiford Your comment is, itself, based on petitio principii (which means 'assuming the initial point'). You see, ending a sentence with an ellipsis of omission creates a logical fallacy; in this instance, you attempt to lead to a conclusion based on an assumption, but that assumption is more in need of proof than the premise you criticize. And, of course, Mr. Dylan's advice - "Don't criticize what you don't understand" is apropos as well.
What at the time were the most terrifying lyrics on any song: "Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command" The greatest generation expected to be masters of their world and especially of their families.

This comment thread is so toxic and many have missed the point of this song. This isn't a republican vs democrat situation. It shouldn't be. This song doesn't seem to hold true because we aren't letting it. We aren't willing to find compromising ground and talk things out. We prefer shouting at one another and trying to change someone else's mind instead of finding the middle ground in our beliefs. If we could work together and stop calling each other fascists and communists, we might get somewhere. I know for a fact this song isn't just valid for the American people, everyone is struggling even if they don't want to admit it. Please, for the love of God, find peace and try to understand eachother instead of shouting over everyone else. We're not only ignoring this song, we're proving Simon and Garfunkel right.
Though I like his use of words and story telling, I feel like Bob Dylan is fueling an unconscious desire in almost all of us to, in a way, not follow the status quo or follow a system. That is probably why he has grown so popular, yet his stance is very unclear. All he is saying is "get ready, everyone".
Khalid Mostafa That's the point. If I may freestyle: "We may not know what the future may hold, but the times, they are a-changing, so strap in for the long haul or bail while you can. Either way, better be ready for anything, man. There's a drive and a purpose beyond simple plan, for the times, they are a-changing." It's all improv. History is what we make of it, and the future is nebulous and distant. We can try to predict and understand, but there are many things beyond such comprehension. All we can do is try our best to do our best...or not. It's our choice and our ultimate responsibility regardless of which we choose.
Seems like Bob Dylan was a prophet as well as a brilliant artist. Good luck America you are going to need it .Don't stand in the doorways don't block up the halls .Vote to get rid of that traitor . David C Milne

Politics in the west are still under the power of the people, we can make changes. We damn near saw it with Bernie sanders in the US, we *can* elect people that are actually decent human beings, and say *fuck off* to the establishment, and therefore make it so politics serve the people.
we need music like this to be a part of our political revolution. This song meant something to me in '64, and I've embraced it ever since. Let our sons and daughters hear it now. We shall overcome !

If I may freestyle:
"We may not know what the future may hold, but the times, they are a-changing, so strap in for the long haul or bail while you can. Either way, better be ready for anything, man. There's a drive and a purpose beyond simple plan, for the times, they are a-changing."
It's all improv. History is what we make of it, and the future is nebulous and distant. We can try to predict and understand, but there are many things beyond such comprehension. All we can do is try our best to do our best...or not. It's our choice and our ultimate responsibility regardless of which we choose.
Don't criticize what you can't understand
I was and it is.
well put.
Seems like Bob Dylan was a prophet as well as a brilliant artist. Good luck America you are going to need it .Don't stand in the doorways don't block up the halls .Vote to get rid of that traitor . David C Milne
Always timeless. Love Bob Dylan
I feel like this whole song was wrote for our time
"Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
The battle outside ragin'
Will soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'"
visionary and very political amazing words of bob dylan
As relevant today as it was 50 years ago..."prophetic".
First heard this on the Heartland was so powerful had to searched for it wht a song❤
Still suitable these times that indeed are changing
Nice video lyrics thanks!
This song is from my teens and all I can say is - what was old in new again.

Love this song 🎵 ❤ Johnny Depp's cover is lovely too
Watched the Capitol Hill protest a few hours ago. Come Senators, Congressmen, please heed the call, don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the wall. Still has meaning Today. That's what happens when people feel left out.
Never been more relevant😢
The THIRD verse is actually the one which is dead on accurate!
Congress: Adapt or get the hell out of the way!
I think the call to writers and critics is vital (verse two). There is a serious overhaul of the media establishment.
Have you two considered doing something yourselves instead of relying on politicians and media figures who have no reason to care about any of your interests?
Politics in the west are still under the power of the people, we can make changes. We damn near saw it with Bernie sanders in the US, we *can* elect people that are actually decent human beings, and say *fuck off* to the establishment, and therefore make it so politics serve the people.
we need music like this to be a part of our political revolution.
This song meant something to me in '64, and I've embraced it ever since. Let our sons and daughters hear it now.
We shall overcome !
+Vincentius Smith who the fuck are you to decide what others do with their time, mighty presumptuous of you, isn't it?
It applies to every generation since he wrote this.
'In the blink of an eye. Your whole world can change'
-Sekou Sundiata
...an it will. Ever anxious, never prepared, in the blink of an eye, my world will change. say it if you want it. It's. yours only if you want it too be. You, the fortunate ones. can and will resist with grace. I will push with the rested, werry, the tired the old, the minorities so we are told.
tHe Spirits are restless with nothing to loose by it... they never had it.

Awesome song.
Great Tune!
There's nothing wrong with facing a illness be it physical nor in your brain truth makes saner people. Truth makes people well. Never give up on yourself!
as relevant today as it was then.
More relevant than ever.
Make sense than ever those days...
This song is pure genius
True words that should be present
When Dylan was Dylan.
I like how he perhaps labled this in a very mainstream way yet he actually posted a very not known about audio track
*"The line it is drawn and the curse it is cast."*
And it will go on forever.
I really relate to this song
Whoa June 2023 if this isn't timely with what we're living through now. Dylan had it right😢
Pretty great /good song.
The phrase at 1:40 is a phrase that you can tell to a boomer who criticize modern young people
I like Johnny Depp's cover
March for Our Lives 2018 : the times they ARE a-changin', thank heaven!
