Dylan wrote this song back in 1963; yet it feels as though it was written for the society and the world we live in today. No wonder the man was given a Nobel Prize for literature.

Funny thing is that as I write this we need someone to stand in the doorways and hold up the walls because everything is collapsing under the weight of change. Not all chnage is good or positive. We have grown placid as a society. We need walls, we need thresholds to not cross. Regardless, always thought provoking music from Mr Dylan. God Bless 🥰

The Times They Are A Changin’
    Come gather ‘round people
    Wherever you roam
    And admit that the waters
    Around you have grown
    And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
And if your time to you is worth saving
Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a changin’
    Come writers and critics
    Who prophesize with your pen
    And keep your eyes wide
    The chance won’t come again
    And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no telling who that it’s naming
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a changin’
    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don’t stand in the doorway
    Don’t block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    There’s a battle outside ragin’
We’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a changin’
    Come mothers and fathers
    Throughout the land
    And don’t criticize
    What you can’t understand
    Your sons and your daughters
    Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a changin’
    The line it is drawn
And the curse it is cast
    The slowest one now
    Will later be fast
    As the present now
    Will later be past
    The order is rapidly fadin’
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a changin’

As brilliant as he was, Dylan was a product of his time and his words on this song echoed the mood of young people in every era.
The sad thing is, things never truly change. There are occasional small victories but the rich and the privileged keep getting richer and more isolated from the misery their greed produces. That is simply human nature. We need the elite to provide employment for the masses but the very nature of being elite means stifling any compassion one may possess. So we may as well enjoy the music, live for the moment and take our pleasures when they come. But don't tell the young for we all need their energy and sense of justice and rebellion to remind us of how alive we used to be.

American Conservatives really. From an Americans POV. And what blows my mind is my grandad didn’t want my dad listening to this song because it had “too radical a message” can you believe it? And as culture shifts and moves on we still see the old folks clinging to nostalgia, cursing young folks and how they’re “ruining traditional values” trying to legislate around the changes young folks are brining with them, all while not seeing that their previous generation did the same to them. My dad loves this song. So do I. It’s still very relevant.

I believe an important takeaway is that no matter what happen, the world will change. your childhood will change, what you were comfortable with growing up will change, and you too will have to change. Time is like a coursing river and it does not care if you are made of stone, eventually the river will carve through your stoney demeanor and you'll be left broken and smaller than who you're used to be. rather than be stagnant like a stone that get grounded down by the flow of time, be like a leaf and follow the current and maybe you'll see something new, something profound, something beautiful.

In the third part, that start at 1:10 he speaks to the politicians that don’t listen the people and think to their own business

@Kurt Standiford Your comment is, itself, based on petitio principii (which means 'assuming the initial point'). You see, ending a sentence with an ellipsis of omission creates a logical fallacy; in this instance, you attempt to lead to a conclusion based on an assumption, but that assumption is more in need of proof than the premise you criticize.
And, of course, Mr. Dylan's advice - "Don't criticize what you don't understand" is apropos as well.

It's sad that people make fun of Bob Dylan, his poetry and music is an art and a message for every generation and the world. Especially now how the world is. They thought the world was ending then and now it appears everything is definitely ending.

This comment thread is so toxic and many have missed the point of this song. This isn't a republican vs democrat situation. It shouldn't be. This song doesn't seem to hold true because we aren't letting it. We aren't willing to find compromising ground and talk things out. We prefer shouting at one another and trying to change someone else's mind instead of finding the middle ground in our beliefs. If we could work together and stop calling each other fascists and communists, we might get somewhere. I know for a fact this song isn't just valid for the American people, everyone is struggling even if they don't want to admit it. Please, for the love of God, find peace and try to understand eachother instead of shouting over everyone else. We're not only ignoring this song, we're proving Simon and Garfunkel right.

Though I like his use of words and story telling, I feel like Bob Dylan is fueling an unconscious desire in almost all of us to, in a way, not follow the status quo or follow a system. That is probably why he has grown so popular, yet his stance is very unclear. All he is saying is "get ready, everyone".

    • @Man-vs-Metal
      @Man-vs-Metal 6 років тому

Is there any single person that has no good reason to be ready?

    • @josiahklein70
      @josiahklein70 6 років тому +4

      Khalid Mostafa
      That's the point.
      If I may freestyle:
"We may not know what the future may hold, but the times, they are a-changing, so strap in for the long haul or bail while you can. Either way, better be ready for anything, man. There's a drive and a purpose beyond simple plan, for the times, they are a-changing."
It's all improv. History is what we make of it, and the future is nebulous and distant. We can try to predict and understand, but there are many things beyond such comprehension. All we can do is try our best to do our best...or not. It's our choice and our ultimate responsibility regardless of which we choose.

Politics in the west are still under the power of the people, we can make changes. We damn near saw it with Bernie sanders in the US, we *can* elect people that are actually decent human beings, and say *fuck off* to the establishment, and therefore make it so politics serve the people.

You, the fortunate ones. can and will resist with grace. I will push with the rested, werry, the tired the old, the minorities so we are told.
