- Parents have voiced their concern in an anonymous letter after the school's pastor pulled the Harry Potter book series from the school's library because they glorify acts of conjuring the dead and evil spirits, among other things.

Well, except priori incantatum. And someone had to use a spell to make the ressurection stone. But those don't truly bring back the dead.

As a potterhead NONE of these spells are real. They come from Latin words. My parents are Christians and they are fine with me reading and watching Harry Potter. My aunt and uncle on the other hand don't like it because they think it's bad I mean ok if that's your opinion but when I asked if they read or watched the series they said no. Don't go around saying something is bad before you do your research. Plus divination is portrayed as crazy and absurd in the movies anyways 😂

The thing is that no christian should be interested in "occult" and "witchcraft". Why in the world would some devote christian have interest in those things? Clearly didn't even bother to read the Harry Potter books otherwise they would have realised that the series is full of Christian themes. @Matt Justice That's actually an alchemist phrase later added to the baphomet. The first Harry Potter book focused on an alchemical legend, and Rowling herself has openly admitted to studying the history of alchemy (which, FYI, wasn't necessarily demonic).
In short, there isn't a case for satanism here.

This Christian loves Harry potter. I'm already on the fourth book and I got them two weeks ago. My step dad and mom thinks it's satanic( I live with my mom) they never said anything about me reading it but they will eventually. Being an inquisitive person and having read about a number of subjects, it is my opinion that people believe in something because it offers a protection of sorts against the things outside of their control. It is easier to believe if something horrible happens to you ‘ it was god’s will’. People have this innate tendency of making sense of their happenings AND surroundings. Why were there gods of rain, sun, and other natural phenomena if not to explain such strange events? It is all lead by fear, specifically fear of the unknown. Why else believe in a world after death? We are governed by that fear, it is natural to want to survive. Of course, religion is much more. It is a system with its own qualities, virtues and such (and of course it varies as such around the world - every culture evolved in a different environment and had different set of beliefs/ideas) but that doesn’t mean that a person who has chosen not to believe in a religion has no morality. How many wars were lead by atheists? None. How many were lead in the name of a god? Many. And it still happens nowadays. Religion can be helpful, but it is often toxic. And I find Christian faith particularly toxic.

If people didn't intuitively know there is a reality behind the illusion, it wouldn't have the fascination for people that it does. Nor horror movies, nor fortune tellers. I assume that this priest is concerned about the effect of real evil spirits on the lives of children, seeing how tragically our culture is destroying itself. Occultism aims its deception and demonic power at children, and has become so powerful that it is used to entertain kids: to be their babysitter. I do not believe in Catholicism, but much respect to this priest for his stand. It is not a book burning; it is limiting the books in the school library to those they believe are not harmful.
@@Mcfirefly2 Harry Potter fascinates kids because it's an imaginative world where anything can happen, and while grounded with human characters, the types of events that unfold are always surprising and novel because of the magical world that JK Rowling created (which isn't based on the tenets of any religion, simply the cultural perception of what "magic" is, which is no different to things like the Wizard of Oz or Narnia etc.) Kids are quite attracted to the idea of having magical powers fly out of their hand etc. or flying around free as a bird on a broomstick. There's nothing nefarious about it, it's just fantastical day-dreaming.

Philosophical types love to say that "evil is just the absense of good". Yet in our real experience, evil is a palpable presence, and that palpable thing is a lot more than the absence of good. The palpable thing in horror movies is there, even when the story is too far fetched to be convincing. It's still about giving people a scare, and to that end, it glorifies moral and spiritual evil. I don't watch horror movies; I try to look away from a horror trailer on TV or UA-cam, and not have to see the overpowering, abominable images they use to inflict lasting damage on people through shock and awe. Many people have struggled to overcome the imagery they have encountered in movie. I was bothered by something I saw in a horror movie I went to with my cousins one summer, when the film flashed an image of babies in an oven on the screen. Later, I met a lady who'd been told by a spirit who identified itself as "God" to put her newborn in the oven and turn on the heat (she rightly identified the spirit as the devil, and she called for someone to help her). I cant help but wonder if she had seen the same horror movie? She was about my age. You would probably say "stupid Christians! They are so _ignorant_ that they don't know _their own minds_ from some 'spirit', and they attribute the changes in a neurotransmitter, etc, to the made-up 'supernatural' ". What we would say is that the spirit was real, but exploited a lowered threshold in her mind, probably because of postpartum depression. Where naturalism probably makes perfect sense to you, from what you've said, because "a supernatural explanation isn't needed", we think that naturalists are deliberately ignoring part of the picture, and that you are whistling in the dark to preserve your materialistic peace of mind.
I don't go to horror movies because they glorify very real evil spirits. But to me, the scariest movie that I will watch, is Steven Spielberg's _Duel!._ That's an absolutely horrifying movie, but from experience, we recognize it as all too real. It doesn't glorify the evil it presents, although I guess you could watch it that way. But the terrifying evil is the evil in human hearts, which you probably would recognize as real, although many deny that too. "Duel" is just very real, and I will put myself through watching it every so often, just to think about how life under evil is: the "human experience" under the rule of sin. But what you do not realize, is that the evil that vaunts itself in horror movies, and the evil in human hearts are very closely related, and work together. While I might endure "Duel!" every 10 years or so, I won't endure the deliberate, occultic evil glorifying itself in a horror movie.
And this is also true, and I'm sure that this is something you'd probably be pushing away, too, but the same occultic evil that is glorified by terror in a horror movie, is also glorified when occultic evil is _whitewashed_ to look like _fun._ Just like drugs: there is the big, scary drug scene you might be afraid of, but when someone tells you that it's not so dangerous, but really fun, and the cool kids are all doing it, and that you might even meet close friends that way, you might allow yourself to be sucked in to it. But when you do, it is just what it really is. There might be many painful, hidden traps that you didn't think about going in, and in fact, information about the existence of those traps would have been suppressed by the pro-drug pushers, or laughed off, so that you would laugh off the dangers, too.
Some of us do believe in the reality underlying the occult because we were enticed into traps, and we know that that palpable presence of evil is real. Anyway, something must be done, by people who care, to keep so many children from becoming trapped in the real traps out there. After all, there is an epidemic of suicide, among even _middle school aged_ kids. Everything in their lives is working against them, and it is tragic that where they look for comfort, is arrayed against them, too. So, if we care, we ought to say something.
