    I'm surprised how ingrained the nature of traffic is in my psyche, once you've got your license, I got mine at least 15 years ago and I don't drive regularly, but every single picture of traffic, from my perspective, in the wrong side of the road, immediately gave me intense anxiety.

    I live near one of the UK's shortest motorways, 1 junction between the 2 ends and the junction is just an industrial estate, the way it ends is literally a relatively small roundabout, and before work was done to 'complete' the motorway, this roundabout didn't even exist - only sliproads (there was just a void of motorway, as it was originally intended to go much further than it does). One thing I should also add, is look at Hanger Lane, If I am not mistaken at some points it can reach 9 lanes, and it still gets extremely busy and there can be major traffic on the a406

    Roundabouts are the best option if the roads leading into it have low enough traffic that the roundabout can fit all of it at once. As soon as the sum traffic on the roads leading in is more than the capacity of the roundabout, ALL of the roads leading in will backup and come to a standstill. When there are no gaps left in the traffic in the roundabout, traffic entering has to come to a complete stop, which then means they need a bigger gap to enter than if they were merging at speed. This then makes the roundabout worse than a 4-way stop in terms of traffic flow. So when that happens, the logical solution is to turn it into a traffic light controlled intersection. Traffic lights impose gaps in each direction of traffic and thus allow all directions to flow at a metered rate. In places where it is predicted that traffic will increase beyond a roundabout's, capacity it makes more sense to save the cost in both money and land to just not build them. (There are lots of Cities Skylines UA-camrs who debate the fine points of this argument, if you want to go down that rabbit hole.)

    The flyover at 6:20 is just one directon, because (if I read the map before it in the video right) it conects two exits next to each other.
    The opposite direction of the flyover doesn‘t need to change level, because you have no conflict except padestrian if you just add a lane on ground level. The direction of the flyover would cross the other exits of the roundabout if it was just an additional lane.

  • @karl2673

    19:36 that's a stack exchange, named so, because it needs 4 levels of roads. A cloverleaf interchange has 4 loops for left turns (right turns for the UK) and is the most basic system interchange out there.
    You know, highway/motorway interchanges are a quite interesting topic to talk about, especially when you get to something like the diverging diamond service interchange or the braided system interchange... or the single-point urban interchage... honestly, I like them all. Well except the cloverleaf, that one sucks.

    • @qwertyTRiG
      @qwertyTRiG 2 роки тому

      We don't have diverging diamonds over here to the best of my knowledge.
      Most Irish motorway junctions are two small roundabouts and a single bridge, instead of one big roundabout. The traffic doesn't justify the expense of two bridges.

    When you zoomed into Los Angeles you zoomed into the busiest junction of highways in the whole city perhaps even the country, the East LA interchange! It’s not much to boast about though, especially given the history of the freeways in Los Angeles. That little neighborhood is known as Boyle Heights, in the 1960s it was sliced up with freeways. They weaved together 4 freeways with 3 interchanges in a neighborhood of around 17 square kilometers. Officials at the time destroyed the city’s most diverse neighborhood despite heavy protest. Meanwhile, the affluent areas had the rich folk complain one time and their neighborhoods were spared. History did not favor Boyle Heights :(

  • @gerrit2409

    A not too dissimilar example of the first thing - where a highway runs off into a city and there are driveways - happens in Vancouver! If you look where Highway 99 runs through Richmond heading north, it’s a proper highway. It crosses a bridge, and suddenly becomes a neighbourhood with million dollar houses and driveways and stuff 😅

Here in Detroit, where the car is king, people have been agitating for decades for more options, and all we’ve managed to bring about is a downtown looping elevated tram, and a 3.3 freedom unit main drag street car. BTW, you should visit Detroit (Sept/Oct is best). Easily the most interesting place in the US.

    I can't remember if you showed this before but show everyone the Katy Freeway. This is a section of Interstate 10 (I-10) between Texas Hwy 6 in Katy TX to Interstate 610 (I-610 or West Loop) in the western portion of Houston TX. I believe the widest portion has up to 26 lanes of traffic with at least half of the lanes bumper to bumper for several hours a day.
    You could make a full video on this freeway alone and how it's a perfect example of induced demand. Even the Wikipedia page for induced demand has a picture of the Katy Freeway
