Face blocking ball when serving.
The rule against hiding the ball is like the traveling rule in the NBA. It says it’s illegal but it is not enforced over 99% of the time. It’s unfortunate that sports allow rules to be broken just so players can “be better” and the game can reach “new heights.” In reality, past players could have been just as accomplished had they been allowed to break the rules too.
Hiding the ball was legal up until 2000s i believe. But totally agree that he should not be allowed to serve like this
Hi Everyone, Look @ this Show WALDNER - BOLL : ua-cam.com/video/T6uBVt30coE/v-deo.html
Seems like a lot of people don't know what a legal serve is. The ball is supposed to be visible throughout the entire serve, not just the point of contact. From the ITTF handbook:
2.6.4 From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of
the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden
from the receiver by the server or his or her doubles partner or by anything
they wear or carry.
gman4911 i
Arkadi Danielyan
The ball is supposed to lay on your open flat hand before the throw. If you are not disabled, your thumb is not above your palm, but in front of it.
So its not even possible to cover up the ball with your thumb, if you follow the rules.
Hint: the ball isnt able to pass through your palm, which is necessary to be hidden behind the thumb.
Arkadi Danielyan
I have never said "below", but " in front", which means the same height.
And when your hand is totally relaxed and facing upwards, you are right. But most of the non-disabled people are capable of forming a flat surface with their hand. Probably you are playing and such a low level that nobody cares about that stuff.
If you are interested to learn a correct service I have a tip for you.
Put your palm at the wall, like you were pushing it away. abracadabra your thumb is not above your palm anymore (or is it stuck inside of the wall now?)
Arkadi Danielyan
It might sound impossible to you, but I can tell you from my own experience, that it is actually possible to balance the ball on your flat hand without letting it slip away
GMan @ just because it wasn't visible to you doesn't mean it wasn't visible to the opponent, don't hate
When the direction of the spin is that much a mystery to other professional players, it's a pretty good sign he is in fact obscuring the ball at the moment of contact, as a lot of others here are pointing out. Which seems pretty clear in the slo-mo replay at 0:57.
Well, from table perspective, the camera is at an angle app. 30° to the right. JSY is on the backhand position, thus being app. 20° to the left of MY. So in the end JSY looks at MY at an app. 50° other angle than the camera...but hey, it's pretty clear! ;)
Clearly using his head to hide the contact point with the ball. This is particularly effective against left handed players.
Raymond Kim you're forgetting the height of the camera he's not blocking the contact with his head because he doesn't contact till below his chest region.
Like so many before me I'd like to point out the ball has to be visible from toss to serve, not only at the contact point. Clearly, that's not the case.
Raymond Kim is it a legal serve?
Bas van der Graaff
Thats correct. But if the ball is just hidden by his head, that cant be the reason for all this mistakes by bis opponents.
Only if you dont have vision at the contact point, it is a signifikant disadvantage.
@@maxmustermann3876 I would like to see if he can duplicate his 'tricky' serves using backhanded serves instead of forehand. Using backhand, the entire serve from toss to contact should be unobstructed to his opponent, and if his technique is that good, then his serves should be equally effective. Has anyone seen him doing backhanded serves?
a good serve is an illegal one
Geoffrey Cheng jjhh
exactly, use his head to block the sight
This one Looks alright.

Geoffrey Cheng they ALL hide their serves. The pictures are out there.
2:09 when the anvil breaks in minecraft
3:14 yeah, that's illegal af
even by pushing the camera angle to the far left and down corner, still the ball is hidden behind his head. The "af" notion part is confirmed! :)
My coach once said that you shouldn't look at the racket position of the server in order to get a good read on the serve, rather, you should keep an eye on the ball, it's speed, trajectory and spin. Rackets lie. Balls don't 😁
The rules say otherwise though
Easier said than done
@@operationblackout1095indeed.
Yes😊
Most of his serves are actually illegal, throwing the ball into his body and hiding the paddle contact. But still, sick spins!
I can illegal serve too, hold my beer
sure, will hold ur beer. im pretty sure ill get your serve 100% of the times :)
Ok. *drinks the beer*
You funny because you know it's not so easy to serve like that even if all the pro players here claim it's illegal.
@@RonnieColeman80 the reason people don't practice serving like that isn't because it is hard, it is because they play by the rules.
@@RonnieColeman80 it indeed requires a lot of skill and touch. However, its effectiveness is largely based on the head hiding the ball for a very long time, making it clearly illegal.
Still lost to xu xin :)

PingPongGod1 the vídeo gives the impression that yoshimura is winning, but obviously not
yeah I found that funny too. Chinese players are just invincible.
PingPongGod1 .
@@theviniso actually it is, when the opponent cannot counter your serve
It is not insane, it just is illegal service because yoshimura is hiding the ball when he hits the ball.
Bruh check 2:12 how is it illegal

round glasses he doesn’t hide all of them completely, the referee can always see the contact point, but half the time the player cannot

Don't get
What are the rules of serving?
Marlon Morte well obviously you need it to bounce on your side and the opponents side but the rule yoshimura breaks is covering the contact area with his head/face, the opponent can’t see the contact of the ball which is very illegal
The contact point is not hidden everytime but the trajectory of the ball. This is illegal
Jeff Jefferson I think the reason is that this wasn’t considered as illegal until recently. By recently I mean sometime after or during yoshimura’s career? I could be wrong though but that’s my hypothesis if you like...
Yup, he makes CRAZY spin, but contact looks very, very hidden. Not legal.
Wait you can't block the vision? If so then that's a stupid rule lmao
@@parkyamato9450 of course you can’t. if the opponent can’t see how the ball was hit, then the opponent wouldn’t know what spin it is, then the opponent wouldn’t be able to receive the serve well.
Those slowmo really show how he hides his serve... illegal all the way...
Yeah maybe, is head in the way sometimes ?
Most definitely illegal.... Too many players get away with this. IMO they need to either enforce the rules universally, or do away with them entirely. It's not fair for the players that DO get penalized for illegal serves, when illegal serving is rampant in all parts of the game.
Yeah. He hides the ball with his head. Simple solution. Use that DHS plastic white & yellow two-toned ball they've used in the China super league and do away with hiding rules that everybody tries to push to the limit. If you want to toss the ball behind your arm? Go ahead. It was that way for years and TT was fine back in the day. With the two tone going on, players could better see the spin to help make up for the fact that everybody would be hiding their contact point. Would also be nice on TV slow-mo replays letting the audience better see the spin they're getting on serves.
I don't agree : his head hides his bat but not necessarily the ball !
CORRECTION: In fact more than half the time his head hides the ball but some times the bat only!
2:55 says it all! LOL he was about to go off!

Didn't know that a good serve is to cover with the body the ball/blade impact instant... Actually that's illegal under ITTF rules...
Gutzan you're going of camera angles for most of his serves he moves in time for the receiver to see when the ball hits the racket.
Its not illegal but it does make it harder
It's illegal because you can't see the ball from the toss to impact. There's times where it's blocked.
@@snakeman97 from the opponents angle it is not hidden. It looks hidden here because of the camera angle.
It's not illegal dumbass
This is the kinda serve that Adam Bobrow has a video on UA-cam about. High toss, contact with a very shallow angle bat creating top spin but a feint follow through, indicating back spin. He then varies with with actual heavy back spin confuses even the best players. Whether he hid POC with his big hair is subjective lolololol
at least i don't have to hide my serve against my opponents.
Any askers?
Yoshimura's serves are good, there is no doubt about that. But, to be fair, it's not crazy spins that give him the edge, its the unpredictability of his serves that seem to catch his opponents out repeatedly. Besides that the ball isn't always visible throughout his whole serve.
Nice serve Junnie boy!!! Go team payaman!
HAHAHAHAHA Kala ko Ako Lang nakanotice🤣
He lobs the ball towards towards his torso, then he leans forward in such a way that his head/upper body is obstructing vision of how his paddle hits the ball... that is illegal...
The ball spins from bottom to top. Yushimura makes contact with the rubber underneath the ball. So it's difficult to read the spin of the ball that doesn't have any sign or black list to know which spin is heading towards the opponent.
Meh everybody talking about illegal without even realizing that the camera is like 5 meteres above in the air, what is hidden from the camera is not hidden at the opponent's and referee's height.
What I am most amazed about is that at the slowmo at 2:11 it clearly looks like a sidespin, not a sign of downspin, and XuXin plays it properly like a sidespin serve, and it goes into the net, so where the heck did the downspin come from? :O
Xu Xin: WTF?
Liu Guo Liang: Hold my Pu Er (Chinese Tea)
Other teammates: He will be studied and destroyed.

@@martinjanas3324 they were illegal in the video. A lot of them. Read the rules of serves. Btw there are a lot and they cover a lot. Most umpires don't care to execute them.
Why than the referee didn't do anything?
@@lizardbyheart2817 literally tho his serves were completely legal
Check 2:12 he tricks people with contact differences
@@Teopong The rule writes that between the toss and contact of the ball with the racket the ball must always be visible for the opponent and that referees have a clear view.
The ball was evidentially behind his head leaving a short time of non-viability for the opponent. Sadly, this rule is hardly enforced.
There are MANY rules, especially when talking about serves, that are not enforced.
I think we should not be much harsh on player, a lot has been changed and accepted like as per ITTF rules, the ball must be tossed vertically straight up during the service but now most of the time it moves back in the air towards the player. Similarly, keeping in view the ball visibility rule, the ball must not be picked/hit below the table height but most of the time players do it, specially for extra spin.
This guy has the best serve ever.
I remember Roscoe Tanner in the 70s when he had the fastest serve in tennis at 150mph and still got beat regularly !
You need more than a good serve to win an international competition as the service is only one part of the game. You must be a good overall player too. Do you remember Ilie Năstase and his spaghetti string racket that was used to end Guillermo Vilas' 46 match winning streak? Those were the good old days!
@Helen Lee even Borg used the wooden racket to win a few of his Wimbledons, I think he changed to a Donnay towards the end and may have been a lighter composite but not sure but yeah, the good old days even though the last few years of tennis have been pretty good too !
Referees count these serves as legal even if the ball is hidden, because it is hidden by the body (shoulder or head) and usually referees dont count this as illegal.
Lebesson does the same thing : he serves and hides the ball, behind his shoulder / head when he serves short with backspin
+ the referee may have thought that at a face-to-face angle the ball could be seen by joo sae-hyuk.
In fact there's many thing that are barely legal that aren't counted by referees. For example, the ball has to be launched straight upwards because a throw taht goes a bit sideway could mess with the read of the spin. But you'll see that a lot of players actually launch the ball slightly towards them, so it doesnt really go upwards, but referees let that slide.
For all the people say that it is illegall, see 2:13 that he isn’t hiding the serve.
A good combination of side spin, back spin and low to the net serve hard to return it with top spin, not entirely his face blocking is the problem. Xu xin wins though.
serve is just illegal
Serve yang Bagus.. Bisa raih poin setiap serve..
Good job..
At 2:13 you can see the ball goes behind his head. Players should be able to challenge and have several camera angles to have it reviewed.
Wow, what a serve...superb
His serve got destroyed by Ma Long badly. I don't think he has even won against Ma Long
2:52 LOL hahaa, XX got headache
Against two great receivers
It's not a good serve, it's an illegal serve, as the ball isn't visible for the opponent during racket contact. This example shows the dilemma of the current situation. An umpire can hardly judge whether the serving player hides the ball or not from a position at the side of the table.
Because YOS was hiding the ball with his freehand, it is illegal...
Excerpt from the official ITTF handbook: "2.6.1 Service shall start with the ball resting freely on the open palm of the server's
stationary free hand.
...
2.6.4 From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of
the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden
from the receiver by the server or his or her doubles partner or by anything
they wear or carry."
Now check at 0.25 speed from 2:11. You say a player like Xu Xin and Joo Se Hyuk "doesn't understand the strategy of counteracting a top spin serve [and] is not in the league of star players"? Sorry, but their amount of success at top level proves you wrong.
Helll coach...sir just like to ask.. .. i changed my rubber now.. a TEBHAR K2 HYBRID hardness 57..and A HURRICANE 8 hardness 38..

Stopped at 3:16 it is clear that the ball is hidden from the camera and would be even more obscured from the opponent’s vision. This match needed better officiating.
Yoshimura's has insane spin in his serve. But it also looks marginally illegal: the contact point is arguably blocked by his body.

Very difficult serve to do 👏🏼 Under spin strike at a top spin height. I haven’t seen any of his recent matches to see if he is still using this service. I could see how it could be illegal but it depends on the umpire of the match
Everyone commenting saying his serve is illegal is conveniently forgetting that even when you see a close up of the contact, the fact that backspin results from that hit defies the laws of physics.
Those are my thoughts as well. He serves Xu Xin an underspin but it looks like the ball is moving too fast for that. Xu Xin burried it into the net.

What makes it incredible isn't that its super spinny or anything. It's that he serves with a lot of deception so opposing players read it wrong
Not deception, but completely blocking it
the serve is not illegal. it just depends on where you stand when u recieved the ball if you stand like ma long at the very corner you will have a chance to see it, look at the ones with joo, he knows joo can see it so he move serving position to middle table, however if you stand like xu xin then rip. it looks illegal on camera because the camera can only focus in the middle
