  • Last year Porsche sold over 84.000 Cayennes, so I picked the sporty 2014 Cayenne GTS to drive it on my favourite roads, to see if a true Porsche-fan like me can actually fall in love with this SUV ...

    Hi, I have had the 2009 GTS for 5 full years now, and I must say that the car lived up to every possible expectation. That's why I'm planning to change mine for the next generation with the same expectations +10% ). The big irrecoverable loss of what I have vs. what I can ever have in the future is the manual gearshift. And you well sounded the main inconvenience: the car decides for you which gear it wants, and oftentimes you just don't like it. Also the need to rev it up from 0 is an issue. However, I just don't feel like going for a diesel or a small engine because of what the 4.8 does when the car is on the move, and the sound... I'd love to have an X5M as a second car, but as I have to choose one, I'll go for the GTS!

    Guido, great review. I have to admit that despite being an avid fan of the GTS, I got mine in October; if I had to be critical about one aspect of the car it's the brakes and I don't have the ceramic option. They definitely remind you about the weight of the car when you push them. Other than that the sound is just intoxicating and I often just switch off the Bose system to take it in. That for me is what brings emotion to the drive as well as the magical handling.

    Excellent review! I always enjoy your videos. I just wanted to share that I recently returned from a trip to Germany with my friend. We were primarily in Bavaria and the Stuttgart area. I decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of driving a Porsche in Germany! We rented a 911 from Avis for a day (If you're curious, 280 Eur daily fee + 95 Eur flat refueling fee + 1 Eur/km for anything over 200km). I was expecting a base Carrera, and was quite surprised when the employee pulled out of the garage in a Carrera 4S with sport exhaust! We left Munich and drove on twisty B-roads to Hohenschwangau to see Neuschwanstein, then on the Autobahn towards Stuttgart, where we managed to reach 284km/h indicated. What a beautiful country, and what a spectacular car! I will certainly miss both. Though it seems I will be returning next year when my uncle orders his Cayenne! I've been trying to sell him on the V6 diesel, though I suspect he will probably get the gas V6 or V8. Unfortunately, no V8 diesel here. He'd find the GTS too extroverted, and the Turbo is just bonkers expensive. Given your comments on the power delivery of the V8, do you think it's worth the premium over the base V6? I haven't really talked to him about his preferences, but maybe the Hybrid is a possibility. Thank you for your thoughtful reviews and keep up the good work!

    I prefer my 4.8 liter Cayenne GTS by far over my Cayenne S Diesel and even my Macan Turbo. Nothing will ever match that final year 2014 naturally aspirated 4.8!!!

      Dude I crashed mine a month ago. Carmine red too 😢. Getting a 2023 GTS coupe now with RWS, PDCC and ceramic brakes so we’ll see how it stacks. But that 2014 GTS with the 4.8L V8 is coveted in cayenne history

    i love my Cayenne i went on a road trip NOT in the cayenne i was in a focus rs mk2 with 500bhp but there were four Porsche cars on the trip over the evo triangle in wales where a lot of cars are tested and the 2 911's a gt3 and a gt4 all left the road at one time or another on wet roads and i vowed then i wouldn't get a Porsche because of that rear wheel and rear engine instability, But ive ended up eating my hat by test driving the Cayenne Turbo the car is so well balanced especially with the active suspension it doesn't feel like a 2ton car at all, i had a range rover vogue with the 8 speed box and you really felt like you were in a heavy car and had a couple of 4 wheel slides (not big ones) but i knew if id pushed it any harder it could easily get out of control, thank you for a great review

    Hi Guido, first of all, my compliments for yet another great review.
    About the Cayenne GTS in this video, you state that this atmospheric V8 petrol engine is an engine with sports car characteristics. I think you are right in saying this, but i also think this Cayenne GTS is the only Cayenne model (disregarded the Turbo model, this is somewhat best of both worlds) that really fits the Porsche philosophy, meaning that it should be driven high in revs, trough sharp corners on its lowered and stiffened suspension, not caring about fuel economy and the tight but not super comfortable sport seats. On the other side, when you look to the Cayenne as a SUV, and especially in relationship to it's competitors and daily usability, both V6 and V8 diesel models are the better choice, and that's why these models are in my opinion sold much more than the petrol models (although here in Western-Europe). I'm only 22 years old but I'm very lucky to have already had the chance to have driven a lot of Porsche models, and when I would ever be able to afford one, I would go for the V8 diesel straight away, just because this engine fits this car the best in everyday use and is very good aswell when it comes to performance (but if i had this money to spend on a Porsche, I would never buy a Cayenne anyway). But to me it just looks like the GTS is the only Cayenne fitting the Porsche brand philosophy and that they just have to offer it, no matter how few there will be sold. And if you really want the Cayenne without compromise, you will have to go for the Cayenne Turbo (S), but in my opinion, the price is just absurd for a SUV as you compare to how much of 911 you can get for this price.
    By the way, those PCCB's were cold I suppose? I have heard more often they just start to get good in braking performance when they are slightly warmed up? Anyway i think it's a bit ridiculous to order this option on a Cayenne, because in the practical use of this car, steel discs won't be pushed to their limits in 99,99% of the situations this car is driven in...

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  10 років тому +1

      Great comment and I agree on many points you made ! The breaks felt like this all the time, but in general and on other Porsche cars I've driven with them, I really liked them. As heavy as the Cayenne is, I think they are a good option for people who drive alot Autobahn kilometers at high speed. I would have liked testing the Turbo S, but I picked the GTS because of it's suspension setup. Greetings from germany, Guido

    I agree, I'm leaning towards the Hybrid for bit more performance, or Diesel for bit more mileage. Only thing I wish they did was to include the nice GTS air intake grille on all cayenne's, since some of the air intake grills look like a strange pucker - like an overbite, while the GTS looks more like gnarly teeth. :-)

    Great review Guido! Quick question. I can't decide between purchasing a 2014 Cayenne GTS (with just 3,000 miles) or a Macan Turbo. Which do you prefer? I have driven a Macan Turbo, but haven't yet driven the Cayenne GTS.

    • @talkingwithgenz1912

      Hey Troy, I have a 2018 Macan Turbo and a 2014 Cayenne GTS. They are my two favorite daily drivers of all time. While the Macan Turbo is faster, I find myself driving the GTS a lot more. The final year of the very loud, very large normally aspirated 4.8 Liter V8 will go down in history. There is no replacement for displacement and that amazing exhaust note that the 3.6 liter twin turbo can never quite seem to match!!!

    Big and heavy SUVs like this one do best with the diesel engines with a lot of torque and low fuel consumption. Even in US with lower gas prices it's becoming tougher with huge gas cost for these SUVs.

  • @JChavsPorsches
    @JChavsPorsches 10 років тому +1

    Love the cayenne!!! Really is an amazing driving car. The absolute worst though is that lack of low end torque in the V8. It's so painful when your foot is down and you wait and wait until about 3K RPM and then the power comes. Other than that the GTS sounds amazing. I'm not sure why Porsche didn't go with the ZF 8 Speed instead of this Aisin model. At least on the non GTS models it does seem very slow and non intuitive. Oh well maybe the facelift will have PDK finally! Awesome review as usual.

    I pick up my Porsche GTS in 2 days - i think i've watched every single possible review on the internet about this car, and vids like your's actually helped me know more than the dealership sales rep did (not sure if thats a good or bad thing)....anyhow
    I see your only real negative is the fuel consumption - living in dubai means fuel cost doesn't ever come into a conversation. It'll cost me maximum 25 euros to completely fill up the car. But you're right, although its fast, its not that fast. It doesnt even enter into the top 10 fastest SUVs, however the Porsche turbo and turbo take spots 1 and 2 on that list.
    But it is a great 'drivers' car - and the interior when fully loaded is out of this world. Looking forward to getting the keys.
    Good review, and honest.

    Good review Guido! I like the looks, but that color is not very appealing to me. I always loved the Cayenne's though, even though I've only driven the previous generation. Good information about the lack of torque down low. Not having low end torque in a big SUV like this would be annoying to me too, so I'd probably go for the regular S or Turbo, even though I like the exhaust sound of this GTS the best. Sadly, here in America we only get the 240 hp Diesel model. If we got the Diesel S, that would probably be my choice. I hope to review a Cayenne in the future to experience this newer generation of the Cayenne for myself! Really nice review!

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  10 років тому +1

      Thanks Matt ! Porsche has given the Panamera Diesel V6 300 hp for this year. Hopefully they will use the same engine in the Cayenne Diesel soon. I just think it's all about the torque and even the small diesel makes more of it than the GTS. The sound is lovely, but you have to rev higher than 4000 rpm until it really comes alive :)

    I agree with your ending POV, diesel would be the way to go and I was looking at one here in the US last weekend. The Porsche feels very comfortable and well made but, it's styling and performance is not what I would like in a SUV but, this is personal preference, when buying this type of SUV, I would go with a Land Rover, G-Wagon, maybe a X5 or even/definitely a Chevy Suburban, like i said, it's personal preference and the Cayenne is to car like for me and I just don't get it, when comparing it to the other SUVs I previously mentioned.....which are more SUV / Off Road capable but, then again some people could only have one car and they could have both.....a car and SUV in one Cayenne in which it is neither perfect in either category but, it does the job for some people and on the other hand....I prefer multiple vehicles....the right tool for every JOB! Great review as always!

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  9 років тому

      VQSeries Thanks ! I'd say the Porsche has a slight advantage, but I haven't driven the latest generations of both cars, so that could have changed in advantage of the new X5 ( which to my eyes, looks way to conservative now btw )

    • @VQSeries
      @VQSeries 9 років тому

      Yeah I'd have to assume the Porsche probably has an advantage, but wow are those Cayennes pricey! See, I'm looking for is a vehicle that "does it all." An SUV/CUV (for practicality) from a repuatable brand with luxury and sportiness. "Fun-to-drive" factors such as steering feel, engine sounds, and a fast, responsive, well-ratio'd transmission to match and keep up with whatever fabulous motor the vehicle is running with (paddle shifters AND tiptronic are a plus!) are important to me. Therefore, the Cayenne GTS/Turbo S, Macan, V8 powered BMW X5, ML63, and Grand Cherokee SRT8 are vehicles I'm looking at, as if I could only own one vehicle lol... P.S. sorry for extremely long comment here haha TheGetawayer

    To buy a Cayenne S, do you think the wait for the 2015 model is worth it? I hear that they are replacing the V8 with a turbocharged V6 that churns out more horsepower. It's the gasoline one that I am looking at. And one more thing, do you think if I wait for the 2015 models, the New-Gen Q7 will also be worth considering alongside a Cayenne? What's your advice for me?

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  10 років тому

      Thanks Mohammed ! Well, I hear many good things about the new V6 and I think you can already experience it in the new Panamera to get a feel for it. Personally I would go for a diesel, even the small V6. It has enough power for an SUV and the torque is just as good as in one of the bigger V6s or V8s. Also have a look at the S hybrid if you don't want a diesel or V8 gasoline car. Greetings from germany, Guido aka TheGetawayer

    I'm not a SUV guy, if I ever had the money to buy a premium SUV I'd go for the Range Rover, as much impressive the Cayenne hability to corner fast, I prefer the Range Rover, it's like a Bentley that can go off-road. Sporty SUV don't make sense to me...if you want to corner fast, buy a 911 for the same money if you want 4 seats, buy a Panamera, easy math.
    As for the Ceramic brakes, if you don't go often to Track Days, it's a silly option, just for the city ride from point A to point B, Carbon Ceramic brakes only work well when they're extremly hot, so...no point at all! Good review buddy! Looking forward for the next one.

    Great review! I quite like the GTS but in my opinion it is too agressive for a suv. the monster 4.2 Diesel is the engine to choose in my opinion, truck torque and very good performances that you would expect from a car with this badge!

      Thanks ! I agree with you. The S diesel is the engine to go for but Porsche doesn't sell it in the US and it was the chassis of the GTS, that made me choose it as my testcar :) Greetings, Guido

    Met a Physician who drove a G550 and he said that it was a gas guzzler and matience was a pain in the ass... I told him I was torn between the G63 and the Porsche Cayenne and he quickly put the Cayenne over as the best SUV he'd ever driven, even better than the Range Rover.

    Hi Gatewayer
    Greetings from Australia. I am a big fan of all your tou tube videos. I am in the process of ordering a Cayanne GTS. Would appreciate your input regarding colour and interior? i made my mind about every thing else. Not sure if i should go with Jet black metalic and Carmine red GTS interior or Carrera White metalic with 18 seats Garnet red and balck interior. I am going for the new black sport classic 21 wheels. Thanks

    I totally agree about the powertrain. In a big SUV like this, you need an engine that has the power down low. You don't want to be ringing out the engine to redline every time to get the torque needed. Get the diesel, for sure. Here in the States we only have the 3.0 V6 Diesel as option, but 406 lb-ft is enough torque to push the Cayenne around.

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  10 років тому

      Thanks Mark ! I still hope you guys in the states will get the V8 diesels one day that we have here in germany. But like I said the V6 is great and in the new 2014 Panamera Diesel we get here, it now pushes 300 hp. More than enough if you ask me :)

    • @markrussell24
      @markrussell24 10 років тому

      TheGetawayer I was saying the same thing about the TDV8 from the Range Rover, but we never got it. My hope is that our country comes around and accepts diesels again.

      @@markrussell24 i found this video very helpfull .
      I think you most adapt to what the engine delivers and most of the power is on top of rpm,the opposite to a diesel.
      Problems with diesel are too big versus N/A engine.

    the problem of ceramic brakes is that as long as they are cold, their braking power is quite low. Using conventional brakes on public roads would make more sense to my mind :D . They have to be warmed up first,(Formula 1)

    • @TheGetawayer
      @TheGetawayer  10 років тому

      I had driven them on a few 911s and I liked them. The problem here wasn't the temperature of the breaks, I assure you that. It's a common problem that a few people have experienced with PCCB breaks. Unless you really drive alot of highspeed miles, like here on the autobahn, I wouldn't go for the ceramics on the Cayenne GTS
