  • Out for a practice flight on the Sunday of a long weekend, doing some IFR training, and shooting a simulated RNAV while flying back to my home airport in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada CYOO. The circuit (pattern) was crazy busy and ATC was struggling to keep control and get everyone organized on their arrival to the airport. To all the pilots out there, I get it, we all have days where we struggle, but ATC was great, as they always are! At one point the controller had to put down the hammer to get everyone under control and down safely....great job ATC......Thanks for watching...hope you enjoy.....EYZ

This crap wouldn't "fly" when I was on (and in) the air around Oshawa.
There was a controller there who told one or two pilots over the years to park at the base of the tower for a chat. Quite a few more who were handed the receiver of a telephone as soon as they walked into the FBO/flight school. I know of at least one student who left oshawa to do his training elsewhere because he got chewed out so badly.
Sometimes I think I'd like to get back in to flying, but I see videos like this, and it puts me right off. The standards really seem to have slipped in the past 25 years. I'm prepared to cut students some slack, but this was ridiculous.

In my opinion this is just another example of too much money to purchase a $250,000 advanced aircraft and pass a pilot check with little regard for the responsibility needed to make the system safe. This seems to reflect our self-indulged society today..

Not to stir up the pot, and certainly not to be a jerk: I was a controller in the US for over 25 years, much of it at busy GA airports in California (mainly SFO Bay Area). It sounds like the Canadian system has a much more restrictive/positive form of controlling than the US when it comes to VFR ops. Almost seemed a sort of semi-IFR type of control where everyone's separated vertically by 500' in the "control zone" (our 'Delta' airspace) until such time that they can come in and join the pattern. Also appeared there was a restriction on how many aircraft could be in the pattern or even the zone at the same time but I could be wrong on that. With those restrictions the controllers did a good job (I assume one was in training) but it appeared to be double the workload for half the traffic I used to work. Not bragging mind you, I don't want to be interpreted as the 'ugly American' here, but it was like night & day to the way we work VFR ops in the States. Thank God you guys have Canadian whiskey and Molson's up there. I'd need a barrel or keg of each every night if I had to work like that. Oh, wait, I do...but it took 25+ years to get there. ;-)

"Not below" is odd phrasing. I'm not certain it complies with ICAO recommendations, it certainly doesn't follow FAA guidelines (I know the video is in Canada). In any case it is certainly not considered best practice in any form of technical communications. Best-practice for clear communication is to use positive statements and avoid negation, "At or above" being a positive statement.
The "at" is noncritical and can be safely missed, a "not" creates a single point of failure that completely inverts the core message.
The effect with radio trouble: "**ross XYZ ******belo* six **ousand" "**ross XYZ ******abov* six **ousand"
