If you paint it with glue and it does not stick you have let the process dry too long, I have seen a vid where they just breath over it and it helps to make it stick, I have tried this only a few times, so I am just commenting no expert, be blessed.

If you have a oil painting with metal leaf (gold imitation) on some parts. Do I varnish it all or put shellac on it?

I heard water based glue when gilding the glue dries and leaves gaps where the Gold doesn't stick too.

You said you are not using gold leaf, what did you use - you said it but I couldn't hear it properly
She was using dutch metal. It's an alloy sometimes used as imitation gold leaf
