7:45 Thats true. The French motorway system is a lot newer than Germany's and thus takes into account modern demands. Its also funded completely private mostly and thus you pay on average 10 € or so per 100 km in toll fees. The companies behind it are earning monopoly high profits as a result. Its up to your own to decide what you find best.
Based on my travels throughout the Northeastern US last year for the first time, I was shocked by how much more… “modern” many of the 1940s-pre interstate era turnpikes were compared to plentiful suburban expressways & freeways. Which withstood the test of time better before an expansion, reconfiguring of multiple interchanges, or even a top to bottom redesign/rebuild? The rural toll roads? Or a growing share of rural interstates, much less suburban freeways in general?
Kind of odd that Calais isn't on the signs even at the A5/A31 junction (the A5 at that point was originally the A26) and that Paris was signposted all the way back to Dijon (from where you would surely use the A6 to get to Paris).
A31-A5 is considered an alternate route to Paris. It has helped reduce congestion on A6 on mass travel days during the winter and summer. A6 used to be pretty bad but nowadays you can see it all green on Google Maps traffic during a 'Black Saturday' exodus. There is a toll plaza near the western end of A5 at Melun that is hugely oversized for its average traffic. It's designed for busy travel days.
I like the French Autoroutes, BUT they don't build 3,75m wide lanes like we have in Germany. Also the middle section is very narrow. So in Fact they build a 6 lane Autoroute in a space of around 30 meters, where we build a solid Autobahn with 4 lanes with a standard planned 29,5 meter wide cross-section.
I guess this is for security reason because Autobahns have no speed limitation. In addition, in France we save space. Building a highway means destroying environnement, forests, or fields with agriculture. There is nothing good in building too wide roads.

As a Frenchman I can assure you, German autobahn is free and mostly without speed limits.
Police is far far more tolerant than French police.

For people living in the east or north of Paris, I wouldn't use the A6 to get to Paris from Lyon but the A5.
Traffic to eastern/northern Paris can also use A6-A19-A5 via Sens. It's some 50 kilometers shorter than A31-A5 via Langres.
