Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- The French have cracked the German radio code on the Western Front and use their advantage for a counterattack at Matz. The already hastily planed German attack during Operation Gneisenau is called off after just 4 days. Meanwhile Austria-Hungary plans another offensive in Italy and German and Ottoman forces fight each other in Georgia.

4 years on, and Conrad Von Hotenzdorf is still in charge of an army group that bears his name. When will Austria Hungary learn?
Apparently 200,000 Hungarian deserters were not so stupid ;)
unleecensedminky they saw enough rumbles on the Isonzo so they wanted to get out before the Rumble on the Piave!
Until the Empire dissolves ;)
13th round? This is the story of the greatest boxing match ever.
At this point they decided to change arenas because the Isonzo had turned red with blood.
There are two types of people in this world:
artillerymen and targets
You are confusing me ;-)
Lassi Kinnunen all artillery men are targets, but not all targets are artillery men
Artillerymen know neither friend nor foe, just targets.
Lassi Kinnunen depends how well you are dug in .
We in the infantry think of ourselves as the queen of battle... at least until we run into your artillery.
You'd think the Austrians would know by now: If Conrad von Hotzendorf orders you to attack, don't.
60 half-strength Divisions, some of which struggled to walk due to malnourishment...sent to attack just so that maybe A-H can gave better spoils after Germany wins it all for them. Un. Real.
What I learned today in history is:
OIL DESTROYS ALLIANCES
Angelo Cortez --Let me get this straight: Ottoman troups, led in part by German officers, attacking Georgian troups, led in part by German officers. SMH. Wait! "For Oil!". Now it all makes sense.
that’s how America wins it’s wars
@@charlesbaker7703 Are you sure about the Ottoman troops at this point being led in part by German officers? I doubt German officers would fight other German officers.
@@LordVader1094 I am German and I don't doubt.
1918 and the Austrians are still Hötzendorfing around.
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and they put it into my food.
well the war must grind on in many ways LOL
Lawrence of Arabia? Meet 'Colon of Arabia'.
I love youre writing
You should make movies...about wars among the stars
There was only one way A-H could defeat Italy in the upcoming offensive: They would somehow have to smuggle Cadorna on the post of Italian army leader.
wrong war?
@@qkljd A-H = Austria-Hungary. I assume you understood Adolf Hitler
Well folks, time for me to pay tribute to my great grandfather, NCO Chief Warrant Officer Henri Bruge. Enlisted as a professional heavy horseman in 1903. Fought Argonne, Champagne, Verdun, the Somme and the Chemin des Dames with the 4th cuirassiers (on foot, as horses were more a liability than an asset at the front) Finally MIA at the Matz on june 10th 1918.Wounded and cited several times. He left a widow and 4 orphans including my grandfather, the late Colonel Bruge and his brother General Bruge. This generation deserves a thought, as they were made of solid material, I suppose. Thanks Indy for a huge amount of work, and hi, Flo.
Salute to your great grandfather. Verdun was the height of French courage.
Verdun ,Somme , champagne and chemin de dame. Dude how did he survive these? These are like the worst of the battles.
From 2022, he’s still remembered.
Its a little mind blowing that a you tube channel has the most detailed, comprehensive, researched and entertaining documentary / information about the First World War that I think has been created to date. Outstanding. Came a little late to the party (mid 1917 or July 2017) - so when this finishes in November I shall go back to July 1914 / 2014 and cover what I missed...............looking forward to that.
Alfredo Jonstone do what I did, binge watch the first 3 years.
I've heard about the channel since the start, but I've been in the trenches since '16. I say binge it.
They do some catchup episodes that you should watch, about 4 or so per year.
Right. Very detailed. It took getting used to and some people cant handle it. But i like it
My Grandfather was one of those 200,000 who deserted in the first three moth of 1918 from the Austria Hungarian army. They said he ate a lot of "Palacsintas" a Hungarian Crepe.
6:00 So, 200,000 Hungarian soldiers had deserted in three months. Understandable, especially when the military's lack of food is detailed later on. My question is, where did the deserters go? Back home? Did they have to steal civilian clothes (and food) to make the trip? Was there any effort by the military to go after them?
comet1970 That question tickles me too! I would also love to know more about that
My grandfather was a Pole who fought in A-H army on Carpathian and Italian front and deserted twice in 1918.
The first time, he got caught and sent back to his company, second time, in the last days of the war, he succeeded and joined Haller's Polish Legions formed near Neapoli.
The lack of food, hygiene and slave-like treatment from Austrian and German officers often described in his brother in law diary. No wonder so much people deserted.
In 1918 the Austrian empire didn't have the power to run after anyone. So run after 200,000 hungarian soldiers....
Yay! Hotzendorf is back! We missed you and your goofy antics, Hotzy!
Hotzendorf is at it again!!
Aguila701 no need to give up, he has convinced himself that he will win so why quit when you're on the imaginary cusp of your imaginary victory?
Yeey! vön Hotzendorf is back! Oh I missed that old man and his funny tricks :-) Let´s see what he´s up to now again... Let me guess? ´Thousands and thousands of casualties for no gain´?
With that face, Charles Mangin could star as tough guy in a Spaghetti Western
Le Cowboy
The Great War Is the move to the new studio completed?
He was quit a character in and by himself!
He was a strange kind of racists, in that he had come to the conclusion that Africans didn't feel pain, the same way an European does, so he preferred using troops from Senegal as assault troops.
If you were assigned to his command, troops generally viewed it as a death sentence.
But at the same time he wouldn't ask his troops to do something, that he wouldn't do... He is the only 4-star general, that I know of, that lead the attacks in person, during the war!
He looks like Charles Bronson... Like the later "Death Wish" sequels Charles Bronson rather than "The Dirty Dozen" Charles Bronson...
Dawned on me yesterday... Put some dark glasses on Indy and have him sit in a wheelchair and he'd look just like Dr. Strangelove....
Later! OL J R
He is one of those rare persons where you can see exactly what he is by physiognomy - a cretin.
Mangin was nicknamed "the butcher" after the Chemin des Dames failed offensive.
He was tough. Harsh. Hardly surprising from an officer not coming from a staff background like most, but as a colonial infantry combat seasoned veteran. And a quite skilled and successful one, specialised in offensive operations.
But he was also opposed to the "offensive à outrance".
And was recalled only after an enquiry cleared him.
Considering him an incompetent/ butcher/both seems therefore quite unfair.
Another note: during the first battle of the Marne, while leading his division, he fought alongside his men. Literaly.
So the "butcher" was not just opposed to useless slaughter, he also didn't ask others to do what he hadn't already done himself, and was still ready to do.
So Mangin was one of these typical French bad asses, who eventually broke the back of the Germans. Type De Gaulle, who only survived because he became a POW.
That honestly goes against a lot from what we saw. I mean, he launched an attack on Fort Douaumont even when it didn’t have any strategic or tactical benefits to it and when the odds were completely in the enemy’s favor (let’s remember, it was HE, not Nivelle, that suggested the attack in the first place). He also fully supported Nivelle’s offensive despite the all too obvious signs of disaster.
To say both failed disastrously would be an understatement.
Great War episode along with world cup match. Paradise...
Yea
Great stuff, as I expect from your team.
And-Hi Flo!
Hi
Hi Flo Hi Flo, it's home from work we go :)
Hi Flo! Could you please transmit the info ? For ua-cam.com/video/JxURw7B3wuQ/v-deo.html , Reims is pronounced with an S sound at the end. :)
Indy finally gets 'Bojna' right!
Indy, i heard a story from one Georgian writer, that Germans changed Uniforms to Georgian trying to stay undercover fighting Ottomans on the way to Tiflis. Thanks, Great War/Great Show!
Hi Indy and crew, this is a question for Out Of The Trenches. Can you explain the situation of Gibraltar during WW1? Did some important event happen? Thanks and keep going!
So basically more incompetence
You've essentially described most of High Command, be it Central Powers' or Entente's
I think that's the official name for the war
WWI: So Basically More Incompetence
Zoabdy yes
No, it a story of Incompetance of SOME.. you are mistaking incompetance of a few with incompetance of all....
Perhaps you should learn the difference.
Of course, you, with a knowledge of 100 years of combined arms warfare have 100 years of 20:20 vision to work with....
so:
1) Do not associate incompetance of a few with incompetance of all
2) Learn what the commanders of the time a) Knew, and b) had availabe (including communications)
3) Learn more about the conditions in the field, by 1917 and 1918 breaking INTO the enemies line was the easy part, breaking THROUGH was the hard part....
4) Learn more aboiut the war full stop, the Lions led by Donkeys meme is exactly that... a meme....
the "commanders" knew they had been given an ORDER to have defensse in depth
AND they had the example of previous FAILURE that disregarding that order was a bad idea
still did it , still lost like retards .......so no point 2 is invalid
One key to victory for Italy deserves attention- mobile reserve divisions, Diaz's stroke of genius. 13 divisions and 6000 trucks, equidistant 3-4 miles behind the front all along the 370 mile front, ready to go where and when Diaz needed them. At Monte Grappa under the able defensive commander Giardino and his 4th Army, this would prove vital.
Just went to Fort Douaumont Fort Vaux and hill 62 recommend them all especially hill 62
Another brilliant strategy by Von Hotzendorf...
A pincer movement no less. His boldness is unshakable.
He's a gift that keeps on giving...
Imagine how different would the outcomes had been if more generals like Boroevic were in charge. He seemed to be out of place, having such foresight...
Another great episode. It still stuns how much the great powers have fallen. Before the war started, they would have thought this level of calamity unthinkable.
Can we get a special about the Chinese Labor Corps? Since they barely are getting recognized for their work during and after World War One
did you watch our China episode?
The Great War yes I just watched it right now lol but thanks for helping me find it
Svetozar Borojevic was the best Austrian commander of the war, not putting the bar that high huh.
the Admiral in "the Sound of Music" ?
Indiana Neidell my hotozendorf fan fictions
Hello Indy and crew, I have a question for OOTT.
What was the influence of American Enterprises during the war?
I'm talking about Ford, Winchester, Springfield, and pretty much any company that can provide war materiel for a war.
Thanks for having such a nice hair.
Remember when this channel was at it's height boy were those the days when every anniversary was covered in each video.
Howdy Indy, I searched this channel and I haven't found a special about Switzerland in WW1, could we have one? From what I know several Swiss volunteers fought in the Great War, that could be an interesting topic.
Guglielmo Cellerai nah mate, no one likes the swiss
matteastwood87 people like their army knives.
alexander williams and i suppose I do eat a raclette from time to time
I do like the Swiss.
I like Swiss cheese.
*"Two of the central powers, fight each other in the field"*
Me: Top 10 Anime Betrayals?
6:11 well that explains why 2 of my relatives deserted in Italy and joined the Czech Legion
Was arguing with someone who kept excusing the bad generals of WW1 saying they couldn't help it and didn't have hindsight... They had years of hindsight to look back on, and explicit orders to maintain a defense in depth, which they ignored! I don't think you can excuse something like that.
Just when we're close to thinking that we've seen everything in this War, Indy's new hook up shows up and tells us how far we are from understanding how irrational wars can be. Cheers Indy !
10 years in prison for opposing the war? Wouldn't have guessed that could happen in the land of the free. Who is this Debs? Think we need a special episode on him.
Hi Flo.
Flo is my buddy to the max. He is my friend to the friendly end. He is a nice friend. I like him fairly well.
You'd think all of the Central Power's and Allies' strategic reserves of stupidity would have been used-up by this point in the war, however...
Excellent reportage; merci et bravo!!
"British and Scottish" you say ... hmmm ... Need I explain.
NO mention of the sinking of Szent István, the most advanced Austro-Hungarian dreadnaught which was the first recorded sinking of a battleship by a camera.
as you saw, the week was quite busy and we did talk about it in our episode about motor torpedo boats
The Great War It was only briefly mentioned.
I bet that sawdust and sand tasted just like chicken!
I ate 2,000 chicken nuggets today.
it gets more intense with every week... i think at the end im going to cry
I think Russia will win 5 nil
matteastwood87 True
matteastwood87 Actually, it's likely that Japan, Albania and Portugal will split German Empire and it's colonies, while Romania, Serbia and Montenegro will completely annex Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungarian Empire respectively.
matteastwood87 Boi you were right!! Tell me what you think about the other matches coming
Do you know this week's lottery numbers as well? Pls.
Same here
An episode on Eugene Debs would be great if you've not already done so. Wilson's crackdown on dissent was appalling, especially given his earlier stance on the war. Makes Joe McCarthy look benign.
Question for Out of the Trenches:
In 1918, United States soldiers (and Marines assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division) started wearing shoulder sleeve insignia so that they could be identified by their division. What methods of identifying troops by division did other nations use?
TGW--just as long, much more interesting, and no one gets hurt during production! You got me "hooked!". ☺
Always great to see what you found! Excellent photos!
Question for Out of the Trenches:
What were the main types of artillery used during the First World War? Could/were they be used as a way of breaking the enemy's lines? Could they be used to break a stalemate or would it just make it worse? What were the common anti-artillery tactics? Were there special units designed to target enemy artillery? Thank you and keep up the amazing work!
2:40 -- It was General Mangin who said that the armistice was a grave mistake and that the peace would last for only 20 years before another great war erupted.
You're right. I checked the documentary series "The First World War" (2003), episode 10 --
17:32 -- ua-cam.com/video/mkzM2zZSzAA/v-deo.html --
and Mangin said that if the Allies didn't invade Germany, then Germany would not admit that it had been defeated, which is what happened.
LOL I wonder how you learned so much about it.
Kevin Byrne I believe it was Foch.
One can only remember norm macdonalds joke about germany:"they decided to go to war with the whole world at once, and it being the world, you would think it took us like 2 minutes to beat the germans, but no, they actually almost won"
After 3 years, push algo push
Really excited to a see new episodes from you guys. You guys are the best.
Hope there is a special on Eugene Debs.
“British and Scottish” lol wut that’s like American and Texan troops lol
Louis Desaix but that still doesn’t change anything it’s still like say Texan and America
Hazzmati I know what he meant but that’s different to what he said, he should have just said British
Might be closer to "Texan and Yankee troops"
Many Scottish units have traditionally been made up of Scotsmen. It isn't much different than saying Australian or new Zealand troops.
It's like saying German and Bavarian. That's really a thing in Germany.
My great grandfather took part in the battle of Animation Folgt.
Ehy Indie, lets do an episode on Emilio Lussu, italian soldier and later politician and author in ww1! Great Show!
Excellent work as always !
Hi Indi question for out of the trenches.
Will you be doing a special about the British troops moved from Flanders to support the Italians, ?
Hi guys, I just want to thank you. Today I had my history exam and could chose my topic, I chose the first ww and got the best possible greade and that's just because of you. Thanks for your awesome videos^^
Hi Indy&crew! No mention about the sinking of the Szent Istvan battleship by the Italians on June the 10th 1918? There's a video about that sinking, one of the few that shows a battleship sinking!!
Quick addition - on June 10th the SMS Szent István was sunk by Italian motor boats. An interesting operation and one that helped establish the MAS as a major part of Italian naval operations.
This is the best channel on youtube, by a long shot.
"British and Scottish" oh dear
Was this action at Belleau Wood the famous "Lost Battalion"? Is there enough material on it for a special? I'm intrigued by their story thanks to the Sabaton of the same name (and in turn I learned of Sabaton through the Great War) and I'm looking to get the DVD of a movie about it.
No, the Lost Battalion was during theMeuse-Argonne Offensive.
If you think about it, Germany didn’t have allies, she had client states. All of them clung to Germany to get something they wanted, or in AH’s case just to survive, and in turn Germany only treated her allies like subjects
after everything conrad did they still listened to him that doesn't make any sense
What does the *animation folgt* mean at 0:32?
"animation follows" - a cue for editing, that somebody left in by mistake.
Animation Follows (folgt is German for follows) probably a placeholder not deleted.
Gareth Regan Why is it in German?
Mr. Dr. Genius The show is based in Berlin, so the editors are German along with most of the crew
Emil Andersen Oooooh, I didn't know that.
It amazes me that 8 km is significant game in this war I understand that this was a static War for the most part but it just baffles me hearing that
I hope you do a special about the lost battalion in the Belleauwood front because that’s a great story
That was in the Meuse-Argonne.
Do an episode on Eugene Debs
I really feel bad for Boroevic, having just watched his bio episode recently...
I must say i'm a bit disappointed for neglecting even the mention of the sinking of SMS Szent Istvan by the hand of Italian Regia Marina commander Luigi Rizzo.
I think such a brave endeavour is at least worth to be remembered.
Viva l'Italia, viva la Marina!
10.06.1918 Premuda.
German and Ottoman troops meet in the field. The Ottomans win! Who would have guessed?!
0:32 is what happens when you don't watch the video before uploading lol
I think the Finnish constitution sounds very reasonable and practical. I wonder if any of it's concepts are part of today's Finnish Government. Great job.
Hötzendorf is here again! Cheers!
Interesting. I'd love to see more similar videos (love your channel great content for ww1, the great war) :D
This was so interesting Indy!
I chose to watch this instead of the world cup
The real world cup begins in the round of 16...
Animation folgt
Indy: Two of the Central Powers fight each other.
Me: OH NO THEY DIDN'T!!!
Hötzendorf? Now that's a name I haven't heard in years.
what role did the French Foreign Legion play in WW1?
Could you possibly explain how badly conscription affects morale?
Really glossed over the American arrested and sentenced to 10 years for practicing free speech. Imagine if that happened today. Many don't realize how great modern freedom of speech is.
RIght, after all, that guy was just one of about 2.000 that were prosecuted for opposing such a "popular" war...
YEp, and is easy to tell just what special kind of bullshit that analogy and decision were...
1 of ~2,000 people that got prosecuted for speaking their minds in a nation built on Freedom of Speech. I did not get burned. I pointed out a historical event that was glossed over on a historical discussion channel.
Yeah, and they glossed over the thousands that flocked to Canada... to join the entente? No! TO ESCAPE THE DRAFT SINCE FEW VOLUNTEERED!
This is the war were the "support the troops" was born as a means to squelch dissent, remember that next time you hear that BS...
trauko1388, chill dude.
Dead Baron is talking about the difference in freedoms afforded by the first amendment between then and now, not debating the righteousness or lack thereof of the war, as you seem wont to do. Everything you brought up is either a red herring or a non sequitur. Take a chill pill, relax, reevaluate your life, and respond when you don't need all caps to make your point.
I have a question for out of the trenches.Did the respective empires have anything in place to protect the hearing of artillery crewman or did they improvise methods in the field?
There's something in the wind , a feeling that something climatic is coming.
Eugene Debs sentence to 10 years and for a speech and America is still known as the country of the free
I said it on Facebook and I will say it here.....PLEASE don't wait until 2039 to do the next series!!!
Troy Brand I don't think they're going to do a WW2 series?
I wonder why at this state they dont listen to Borojovic which seem to be very competent during the whole war while Hötzendorf was the exact opposite
Many Victoria crosses were awarded to British Indian Military personnel fighting the First world war. Peculiar British recruitment pattern lead to depopulation of whole villages in Punjab especially. They merit the attention of Great War team, if not much, then like Fifi and TuTu of Tanganyika.
indee "i start every episode with a hook. right?" well, thats better than starting every episode with a right hook.....
British and Scottish troops are the same thing. It's not just us English folks that are British.
why haven't done a video on georgy zhukov.
Earlier this week I saw a post about WW1, but I didn't read it because I didn't want to be spoiled for Thursday.
WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH ME?
Potentially The Butcher would be more useful in the coming weeks? Against fortified trenches, such aggressive tactics have been proven futile but with the nature of warfare on the western front changing, would these techniques be of more use?
Damn Belleau Wood only a footnote? It's where Marines earned our Devil Dog namesake.
in the whole picture of the Western Front it was pretty unimportant. Not the Marines of course and we will dive into it a bit more soon.
PS The Devil Dog thing is very likely a myth.
That is what you get for believing propaganda! XD
"British and Scottish troops" 🤔
