К моему стыду не знаю это ката в Сётокан из 26' традиционных в исполнении ныне ушедшего сихана Хирокадзу Канадзава. Красивое динамичное ката. Благодарю за данный материал. Получил эстетическое удовольствие от увиденного.
I did not see this kata on his book of Shotokan katas. My theory is that some katas that the old Shotokan practitioners learned with Funakoshi did not make it when the JKA standardized katas for their syllabus. Kanazawa is a product of the JKA. There are modern versions of this kata from Shotokan karateka because they compete in the WKF and other leagues. I saw a video of Kanazawa performing Seinchin, I think. It was panned by the Goju Ryus, Shito Ryus, etc. but I thought it was excellent from a Shotokan perspective.
Never saw a Shotokan version of Suparimpei Kata before. Evidently the Karate Dojo some of these old videos are from, incorporated Goju Ryu forms into their curriculum. Thank you so much for posting this.
I just saw a JKS performance of this kata. It was very dynamic and does look like a Japanese version of an Okinawan kata. I had been practicing Koryu Gankaku from Kanazawa's SKIF and I think I would like to learn this, too. It looks like it will not task my 70-year old knees too much. Thanks for the post. OS!
@@matthewbaumann630 According to the late Master Kanazawa, it's an old version of Gankaku. In Shotokan, Gankaku is performed in a vertical straight line as opposed to Tekki which is performed in a horizontal line. Koryu Gankaku, on the other hand is performed in a diagonal line starting to the left. I saw it on UA-cam and it's on Kanazawa's book of Shotokan katas. In fact, it's the last one on the list. If you perform Gankaku, you will find the similarities because I think Kanazawa 'shotokanized' the original Okinawan version. This is not taught in the JKA as far as I know. I learned it to add to my paltry list of 24 katas. Long, this but I hope it helps.
Hundreds of variants but does anyone understand them? Lots of high dans charging about with full on opinions of where they come from. But again do they know what the hell on earth they are doing.

That is incorrect. There are two versions currently floating around called Hyakuhachiho. Neither one matches Shitoryu or gojuryu verisons. BTW - suparinpai was my godan test kata in shitoryu.
Looks totally different from the Shotokan Version we see in competition these days.

What is Koryu Gankaku? I can't find a list of SKIF kata online.

Many Shotokan katas have sanchin dachi, and there's also no shortage of katas featuring little to no zenkutsu dachi among those 26.
