I first listened in high school with "Caring is Creepy". I'm 33 now lol.

I never really listened to The Shins growing up, but discovering a few song of theirs lately, I can say that their singer seems like someone who is aware of the harsh realities of life, in spite of their sound and the impression that their music gives aka the typical 'care-free, indie melody". What do I know though.

My first LSD experience was to this album. Happy 10 year anniversary to that event.
The part where the banjo kicks in really gets my head bobbing, then immediately after it's complemented by the old-style sounding electric guitar.

Let's talk about your lyrics. I've never liked a band more in which I understood the songs so little. For instance, one of my favorite songs on the album is "Australia." ::
Well that song isn't about Australia, first of all. That's from my memories of working in offices. I've had a hundred different jobs, and there is a special kind of sickness doing a job in an office. I was a bookkeeper and a secretary, and there is something so horribly boring and defeating about it. That song is also about this woman from Texas who was just awful, a racist and a miserable person. I felt sorry for her. In Australia, she's Himmler. So it's partly me wondering, "Is this what humans are meant to be doing?" You're in this fucking cage and there's people you can see through the window and you see the gardener and you're so fucking jealous.

Others weren't. Haven’t read all the comments, but I LOVE THIS SONG, so 20 years ago (Dear. Lord. Has it been that long?!?!) I googled what the lyrics meant and they said that The Shins came up with this song after watching a woman in a window in Australia that was going about her evening.

You ever really like a song from a band and for whatever reason you don't look into what else the group has done? That's me with The Shins. I feel foolish. I loved the songs used on the Garden State soundtrack..(Caring is Creepy and New Slang) which I still listen to, but never looked into what else these guys did. I love this song and many others I heard for the first time just this year. At 55 I'm finally learning.

James Mercer is a better melody writer than Lennon/McCartney. Paul can write a catchy pop song with musical integrity, but James has the ability to make you openly weep while singing along. Fuck me this is a good song
