I think the thing I like about your videos is you are a pretty awkward guy and no hate cause I’m the exact same but you still put yourself in situations that may be uncomfortable and it’s admirable. Sitting here in a bus station in Ipoh Malaysia feels surreal as it wasn’t long ago I was watching in the comfort of my home in Canada. So I thank you sir for pushing me to be uncomfortable
Just came back from Bali and I am already on skyscanner to check flights for my return! What a magical island. Landscapes, people, food, history. It has all the ingredients for an epic vacation.
Thank you TOMMY and Mey..A beautiful Hindu ceremony..incredible experience..😮love the coffee/tea man..😊 Be safe..i get to travel the 🌎 thru ur eyes..ty
Experiencing history is never boring...going to the places and experiencing the sounds, sights, smells, culture all firsthand is very inspiring. But as for the phrase "history is never boring"...I have many middle schoolers that might argue otherwise 🤣. But I understand your point, and I personally agree...but then I am a wandering spirit that has always loved experiencing what the world has to offer...especially the older places where the true history is somewhat unknown, lost toa certain degree if not entirely, and open to speculations that serve as the inspiration for dreams and a great story 👍
That ceremony was beautiful and very interesting! Thank you so much for sharing this video with us! Fascinating country + culture. I liked the clothes they adorned you with. And that's a BIG event! So impressive to see!
I truly enjoy the touch of historical knowledge you provide. Bali seems very laid back without the hustle and bustle of many places and your expose has put this on my bucket list. As always, thanks Tommy (& Mey) for dispelling those pre-conceived notions by drilling down into life. Namaste. One love. W
This was awesome Tommy. This time you really got inside the culture and customs of a community. Amazing! Thank you to Mey, your guide, too, that protected you and oriented you.
Excellent video, Tommy! It was nice to see you go headlong into participating in the ceremony. PS from one pale NYer to another, a little sun wouldn't hurt!
Tommys demeanor and calmness makes every video informative and interesting. Tommy? Waktu kamu baca sama ini, terima kasih untuk video kamu. Setiap video, di Cina di Amerika Selatan, di Afrika, semua saya suka! Alhamdulillah!
Amazing as usual Tommy! Basically when someone says they’ve been to Indonesia when they visited for example Bali, you visited only part of it. Here they have Hindu tradition, where in other parts it’s muslim. Whatever it is, Tommy you are amazing, thanks for sharing everything with us!
Bro your first and last statements are true. It's so sad what the digi-mads have done to Bali. I use to go twice a year to surf and buy artwork during the 90's. Lived there in 2001, knew people killed at the Kuta bombing. I want to return so bad but the memories I have are too precious to be ruined by the way it is now. I always went alone, forced me to meet balinese people. I was taken to so many temple ceremonies and had unbelievable experiences. Very cool video!
I love Bali. Been there twice. The first time I went in 2014 on a whim. I was invited by a friend. So I went. I didn’t even know where it was and had to look it up. It was a magical 3 weeks based in Ubud. All the ceremonies and offerings bring back memories. As a fellow NY’er I think you would appreciate some of my stories from that trip.
Bali is a super cool place if you're willing to go off the beaten path and ignore the IG tourist traps. Awesome to see you documenting the lesser known parts of the island! Loved the digital nomad clown 🤣
As a non-bali Indonesian, I really love your interaction with the locals. And also you knowing the history is also pretty awesome. Cant wait to see more like this in another country
Mey was a really cool person, she felt like somebody you already know even if you never ever met her and just seen her in the video. I was surprise to see alot of trash around too, all and all I think Bali looks cool.
I am in Bali right now and I had no idea that it would be the way it is so many people here working online and up to there necks in instagram posts (tourists or digital nomads as they go by) but it’s a lovely place and the locals and food are incredible still so many people here for the wrong reasons in my opinion
Agreed. I find this also to be particularly the case in Chiang Mai and Palawan. Sabbatical is like the anti dIgItaL nOmAd digital nomad. Very rare, in my observations.
If you get out from the popular places and drive to the local areas you can see a less digital bali. The drive from Sanur to Ubud for example is pretty cool as you see lots of locals and locals stores shops etc
We were in Bali around the same time as you were, and found the same thing. Lots of temples, lots of religious gatherings, praying. We were able to visit some resorts as well as visit the countryside. We really enjoyed the hospitality of the people on the island and preferred being up in the mountains where it was significantly cooler and very pretty. We still miss being in Bali a year later.
I'm always amazed how you throw yourself into the culture and seem so at ease with the locals. Your commentary is always natural and unforced with just enough information to get the viewer to understand what's going on with out being oversold. Keep it up my friend. Safe travels.
As iam from west Australia it’s only about a 3 hour flight ; Bali we love it but also we respect it . People are lovely an it’s a great place to chill out at
Love it. I went to Bali back in 1999 - no such thing as digital posemads back then but was already very commercialised for tourists. I stayed in Nusa Dua so less brash than Seminyak but still had very much a resort feel. Would love to go back and see more of the place. Great upload as usual. Oh and nice co-host. Guaranteed a nice view! 😉
I could listen to that music for quite some time. I find it relaxing, which somehow makes no sense to me as it's very intense. Maybe some hypnotic vibe transmitted.
lol, I took 11 years of Bahasa Malay (melayu) as a second language, and you almost have more vocabulary than I do in a month...... as usual, very entertaining video. Definitely a fan of your vlog. thank goodness no drone filler footage, or royalty-free music in the background. Very "Tony Bourdain" - like monologue without the food bits
Loved the video but i am someone that like to see both sides of things and chances are i will probably never visit Bali so i do like to see the touristic side of places also,i get it you want to get away from crowds but looking at all it has to offer is great as well.take care my friend.
Pretty crazy that some other traveldudes have millions of subscribers and you don't. You are the man we watch. You should visit Sweden some day. Hit me up if you go to Stockholm or Uppsala. 👍🍻
Bali's beach is just standar beach in indonesia, not that special, but their culture and architecture on the other is on another level. As someone who was born and grew up in bali, and then living in many provinces, I won't come back to bali for beaches, but for culture and people hehe
I clicked for Mey and ofcourse you Tommy! Don't always comment but always like and watch the videos! Bali looks cool and the people seem very friendly even if you did have some trouble understanding one another!
Thank you for your channel. I used to be a traveler as well, and I traveled similarly to your style, but without your gift for language. I did travel photography and writing before the UA-cam era. But I met my wife in Taiwan and traded one life for another. I am a family man now with no regrets. Your videos make me feel like my old self is still alive. Now I have everything. I hope for my sake you keep going. I hope for sake you are able to settle down. Either way, thank you for taking me on your journey.
Bali is fun. In my opinion a great starting point for traveling through Asia. My buddy lives there so for me it was also a great reason for me to head out to Bali first. Fast forwarding years later I'm still exploring Asia and for me one of the continents I adore. My next trip will be Japan!
It’s admirable that you try to speak the local lingo and people do appreciate it. If you find them not that responsive, it’s probably because Balinese (like Javanese) is a stratified language with levels of speech. This basically means that there are different words to use based on who you’re speaking to and you have to establish your relationship with someone first before choosing the right level. Please don’t take it personally. You might be better off with Indonesian, since it doesn’t have that kind of levels of speech. 1:10 the banten (offerings) that you said a sign of Hinduism is actually one of the things that set Hinduism in Bali apart from Hinduism in India, but at the same time similar types of offering can be found all over Indonesia in various folk religions native to the archipelago. Another difference is of course the holidays and rituals, like the Aci ceremony that they let you partake in. 14:57 unlike koils or Hindu temples in India, pura or temples in Bali are not always dedicated to a single deity. There are temples that are designated to certain clans only, temples for certain professions, temples of the cardinal directions, etc.
Cool channel. I'll join. We spent another 17 days in Bali in March. West Bali National Forest! to Munduk, to Ubud. There is definitely a Bali beyond the thumping.
Holy Moly… you’re a linguist too!? …picking up the idiomas cuando estas pasando por los paises… muy rapido! You’re better than that guy from NYC who “learns” a language in a week… enough to go into a Nigerian convenience store to impress the shopkeepers with his patter!
17:15 , you and your accompaning companion for the day ( by the way , you chose well ) , did wonderfully . I was almost able to gat a sense of being there . Carry on young friend .
"To many god damn white people" Perfect ending. 😆 And your newly found friend seemed very nice and beautiful as well, which is a bonus i guess. 😇 Keep it up and enjoy every minute as i know you do.. cheers mate!

One love to all my Bali and Bule friends
great videos found you 2 years ago very enjoyable and im so glad that child in africa is no longer afraid of you anymore lol
Fantastic as always ‼️👍✌🏽❤️
mantap mas bule
One Love Sabbatical
Are you gonna go to vietnam soon ?
This channel is my favourite place on UA-cam to come and relax. No music, no unnecessary editing; just a dude with his camera walking the world.
Couldn't agree more or have said it better myself
Mee to this dude take me back nearly 40 years. When I was doing the same. But no you tube back then ……
💯😌
AGREE!!!!😃
Yeah, I used to watch a bunch of Bald and Bankrupt, but I get tired of the constant posturing and the need to always do something more extreme.
I think the thing I like about your videos is you are a pretty awkward guy and no hate cause I’m the exact same but you still put yourself in situations that may be uncomfortable and it’s admirable. Awkward travelers unite!
I think Quirky is a better description..
He's got a different style than for example Bald & Bankrupt but I enjoy watching both of them
ngl tommy isnt awkward at all lmao
Digging the music too. Frank Zappa meets Tito Puente. 😂 12:58
Thank you for providing great content, as always.
Been seeing this for 30 years, married to an Indonesian lady who is a member of a royal family. Love Indonesia!

History is never boring. 👍 It’s another reason I like your videos because you always educate us about the places you’re traveling to.
Right? I literally said "No I won't!" right out loud when he said that.

Hi Tommy, glad to watch this video. You are in Bali 😊. I was born in Buleleng. Notrhen Bali. It was in 1946. Bali has changed a lot.
This was awesome Tommy. This time you really got inside the culture and customs of a community. Amazing! Thank you to Mey, your guide, too, that protected you and oriented you.
Great chemistry between you two. She brings the light out of you.
Always a treat, thanks so much for your videos Tommy

Love your content brother keep up the great work!
Thanks so much Tommy!! I would never push myself to be involved so much. So the vicarious experience is priceless
It's the most beautiful country I've ever been to. The statues temples and natural beauty is stunning. Such deep cultural and religious history
It's chinese temples
What i love with your channel is that you keep being chill and down to earth despite having soon 500k subs.
Tommys demeanor and calmness makes every video informative and interesting.
