I love how you went to Jakarta without too much researching beforehand, or else you wouldn’t have ordered beer on a roadside warung because some “world travelers” would’ve told you that it’s impossible to do so in the capital of the world’s largest Muslim-majority country; or you wouldn’t have gone out to experience the nightlife after some know-it-all told you that the city goes to a total standstill throughout the month of Ramadan 😁 I find it really cool that you didn’t recognize Bintang, something that all the “certified Southeast Asian backpackers” seem to take pride in knowing.
Look, I love the internet as much as the other guy, but there’s such thing as over-researching and sometimes we forget that it’s good to let a destination surprise you once in a while. Cheers from southern Borneo!

Bintang beer comes from the old Heineken Factory in Jakarta. If you look at the star and design of Bintang it is exactly the same as Heineken. When the Dutch were forced to leave, the Indonesian people took over the factory and changed the name and logo to Bintang. As you might have tasted, Bintang is very similar to Heineken @Sabbatical

I can not check this but it might be that the export version is lousy while the local is good. Don't know. It's interesting that the firm was winning awards in the 19th century and nothing afterwords. The Czech have excellent beer that unfortunately does not travel the world. Shame.

I also got interviewed 3 times by students on my sightseeing day. When I posted my flight to CGK, a friend wrote "I hope you stay there only on your way to Bali". I guess after my posts and especially after the visits at Henshin and Skybar, the people were impressed that it can easily compete with Bangkok. Btw just a tip - try not to use your left hand when giving/taking things and don't use aku/kamu when speaking to a person you just met/anyone older. You can say "bapak/ibu" or "mas/mbak" instead (Like "Bapak suka yang mana?") or "anda" if you want to be really formal. Calling strangers "kamu" is seen as overfamiliar and in turn can be read as a bit aloof or impolite.

Impressive how you started learning the language only a month before and you could communicate that effectively. If I may ask, how did you go about learning the language, did flashcards or watching/listening to media in Indonesian come in handy? I'm learning a language (German) myself, but communicating on the spot is often a difficulty.

You should have called the vid "NO WAY!!! Eating COW BRAINS in the craziest city in the known universe" That would been both more 'vloggy' and an anti-climax at the same time. I'm glad that's not your style, Tommy. Enjoy the delights of Jakarta. Your observations about the vibe being a mixture of different things is spot on.

Jakarta, paradise for shopping and gastronomy lovers. Local, Indian, Mexican, Morocco, Asia, Europe, Africa and many more. Just say and explore. All restaurants are available, street food with thousand menu's, from the exotic to the weird. Jakarta has over 200 malls. Jakarta as the city's beauty and the beast. The Jakarta vibe from bad smell to good smell, from cheap to very expensive. From the worst to the luxurious. Jakarta is like a merry go round. Always very attractive and never sleep city. So, I would highly recommend you to come southern asian country( india, nepal, bangladesh, pakistan). Here are also many slum areas. IN southern Asia, many people understand hindi and english so you don't have to learn so many languages although I know you love learning local languages.
And another important thing is southern asian are very active in youtube you will get lots of views and active subscribers which will I think helps to boost your channel.
    Anyways, love from nepal🇳🇵

Landed in Jakarta, the traffic, smog and humidity was "gila", crazy ( to be fair, as most major cities)...after a few days I aclamitzed, then the city open up to me. Tourism was down cuz of the Bali night club bombing back in 2004,none of this refrianed me from traveling there...always had a great time with meeting people, eating exotic food, the whole lot...my main destination was the Boroburdor Buddhists temple...great memories...many speak English so no problem getting around...still, you are a Bule, foreigner, don't bother me, USA presence in far east is resent ed...some wore bin laden t-shirts, highly recommended nonetheless...
