I agree with you. But if more kids think that their parents will be held accountable for something their kids might do - it may help deter kids from doing this. As kids, we don't tell our parents everything. So I don't believe all parents are responsible. But I think they should be investigated either way in these cases.

It breaks my heart that the shooter begged for help and expressed that he was in pain and his parents laughed and told him to suck it up. My child started showing signs of depression in puberty, and I immediately got him into a therapist. I was a single mother without insurance, but i found a way. My sister in law decided to mock her teen daughter, her dad and step mom got her help, and she wound up in a situation at school that she convinced cps and her school admin that her Mom is cruel and she was not safe to herself at my Brother & SIL house. Now I haven't seen her in 5 months, but I know she isn't hurting herself, is receiving therapy, isn't being bullied at home, and her grades have improved, and she has eliminated toxic friends. ❤ I think about her everyday.
My parents were my first and continuous bullies, they made sure that my little brother knew that was expected. And if I spoke up or defended myself, denial, retaliation, vindictive punishment and oppressive rules.

This is not a case of are they good parents - they are terrible parents, being a terrible parent should not be a crime. Hindsight is 20/20 too.
The perp was charged and convicted as an adult - this means he knew the impact this would have on the victims and the community, he appreciated the consequences. He knew he was gonna shoot up the school, get arrested and get a life sentence. He did.
The state wants you to believe that failure to act is not only negligence but CRIMINAL negligence - you buy your kid a gun you're criminally liable for the school shooting.

Its going to be hard to see what the school should have done differently. He hadn't done anything dangerous yet, pictures are not a crime, so they couldn't just hand him off to police. They can't provide additional in school mental health resources without the parent's consent. They could have searched his backpack every day when he got off the bus in theory, but they'd have no way of knowing when he got to school every day or if he had time to hide something... you get the picture. Even if the school system is liable, holding one individual person responsible outside of the shooter and parents will never happen. They did take steps to try to prevent this, unlike the parents.
