I know its a long time ago and doesnt matter much now. But the trick is to not tighten nuts up top. Just thread enough to hold it up. This allows for movement and play to adjust enough to get bolt lined up on bottom. Otherwise you are just trying to bend the strut being held by tight bolts up top.
