Painting headstocks

- Fact: The first thing a guitarist looks at when they see a guitar is the headstock to determine the brand. This is why a great artistic design and look is so important. Here's a quick video of the process that I use to spray color on my headstocks as well as applying the logo.
How are you not more popular? Dumb ass youtube algorithm. Most folks don't show off enough paint job details. Thanks!
Thanks for your comment and for watching. You're right, there really isn't much out there other than painting with nitro. I'll try to post some more paint type videos soon. Cheers!
when did you peel the tape from the sides of the headstock? Was it still wet? the edges look flawless....
I peeled it away about an hour after the last coat was applied. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Saved this vid. Gonna do a neck this way. Espresso colour on the headstock. Oil finish on the neck. ✌️🎸✌️
Awsome John! I'd like to see the final finish!
They look great! Who makes those stencils for you?
Thanks! I had them made at a local sign shop near me. I gave them an .svg file of my logo, they loaded it up in their computer program and cut out 100 of them for me on a sheet of vinyl. Thanks for watching!
So do you put the lacquer or whatever you're using before you spray paint or after then Sand and buff
Thanks for your interest in the painting process. First, I spray the face of the headstock with a polyester sanding sealer, when cured, sand it flat with 320 grit sandpaper. This ends up being a very thin finish. I then spray the base coat color to the polyester finish, then a clear mid coat to seal in the color and allow me to apply a low tack decal and tape so it won't disturb the color coat. After it dries I lightly scuff it with a fine scotch brite pad and apply my logo decal (which is actually a negative) and tape . I spray the logo with color, peal it off to reveal the painted logo. That is allowed to dry, then I spray my clear top coats. I hope this was helpful to you. Thanks for watching!
now that's a flawless headstock. Mind if I ask, I'm about to refinish my guitar's headstock, my only concern is the sides of the headstock, any tips on how to get a nice result without having to buff off(at least not too much if must do) the sides? Thanks and Subscribed!
I use frog tape on the sides of the headstock. Tape right to the edge. This tape leaves a clean line with no bleeding. After the clearcoat is safe to slightly touch, I take the tape off. After it is cured, I sand lightly on the corners. I oil finish the sides and back of the necks so there is some fine sanding later. I hope this helps!
so what type of oil and which grit do you recommend?@@lesperanceguitars8381
Cool! Way to go! No fuzz!!!
The logo comes out crisp and clean with this process. Thanks for watching!
So you only sand at the beginning and at the end, then you buff correct?
I sand back the sanding sealer, spray color and clear. Then I final sand and buff after it cures.
For sparkly paint would u do the same process
Yes, the process would be the same. it is important to spray a couple thin coats of a mid coat finish to lock in the color and flake before you stick the logo on so that it doesn't lift any material off.
@@lesperanceguitars8381 thank you i appreciate your time an help.
