I'm a 69yo Aussie & had the luck to see them live in London in the late 60's. They were incredible & one of the very best concerts that i have ever seen. All the group are amazing, especially Steve Windwood & Jim Capladi. Long live GOOD MUSIC.
Amen to that - I wish I had seen them in the 70-'s but I don't think they came to Boston around then -lots of memories of listening to John BarleyCorn & the low spark of high-heeled boys - I remember how unique the album cover was because iy wasn't square
Katie Sauve I attended SUNY Albany in upstate NY. I WORE out the Canteen tape listening to it over and over at the campus center. All the other students were listening to shit pop music.
David Sauer Definitely a killer version of 40,000 Headmen on Welcome to the Canteen. More stretched out than this version. I’m still trying to figure out what Steve mumbles at the end of that version. It’s after the “roaming and rambling” section. Every time I listen I’m blown away that he could sing and play so well but when he talks he sounds like he’ definitely “flying high above the clouds.”
I was 9, my brother was a senior in high school. He had this album (and MANY others) from this era. I remember hearing this song on the radio and being captivated by it. The music from this time period has stayed with me and I still like it today. It was very influential in my life. There was just a wealth of musical talent at that time. Cannot believe it was 40 yrs ago!! Time is flying by too quickly.
This knocks me out! How central and meaningful this song and Traffic have been in my life. I mean, for those of us in my small community of Heads who had psychedelics as a rite of passage back in the early-to-mid '70's, Traffic was part of the fabric . . . Joints smoked on snowy streets with Winwood's White Soul voice echoing . . . man . . . Too much!
Hey like far out, man. I was 18yrs old when I attended this concert. Flash forward 39yrs...w/ same hi school partner we attend the Clapton/Winwood Reunion Concert 2011(Hllywd Bwl). Both were fantastic events, I'll never forget. Big time Traffic fan here, b4 & after Blind Faith. Whoo-ya!
beautiful music. I remember my Babysitter would bring this record to my house when i was very young along with hendrix, joplin, and Zepp what a wonderful musical time.
I agree. Steve Winwood could sing out of the madness. How do you feel about thinking the world was mad 4 years ago? It is much worse than I could ever have imagined now.
I got to see them in Durham just before they released Low Spark. They did the whole new album plus 40,000 and other greats. Magical. Steve in a white suit, Capaldi and Wood perfection.
I stumbled across this concert VHS in a music store back in the late 80s. Good news is I bought it and watched countless times over the next couple of years. Bad news is when I moved somehow it got mixed in with my roommate’s stuff (who was totally immersed in 1980s alt music and didn’t give two craps about Traffic) and I never saw the tape again.
Great stuff. All these guys, Traffic, Jethro Tull, Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple and the rest were such icons. Pioneers in the true sense, melding jazz, folk, rock and roll, into a new form of music that dominated the charts for over 30 years. Winwoods voice still sounds just as good today by the way. Always liked Jim Capaldi on the drumkit too. Loved the epic masterpieces of music all these bands created. Real music baby....moving, haunting, mesmerizing, and rockin!
After all these years its still chilling to hear this a d I am still trying to get this flute bit down.... yes well how pathetic I am 63 yr old female who still thinks I could have been a jazz flute playing chick! Kayo in Texas
Karen Olivia Ha. I am a 59 year old man just one state above you. I once went with a chick because she played the flute, back in High School. Not pathetic, just human, all too human. Peace.
There`s a wicked-good version of this on the "Welcome To The Canteen" (live) album from `71, which featured Dave Mason, Rick Grech on Bass, and Rebop on percussion. I saw that lineup in `71 at the old Academy Of Music in NYC. They were outstanding, I really miss those days (six bucks for a concert ticket !)
I was at that concert, or possibly the one at BAM. They kicked it off with "Rock and Roll Stew" Rebop was wearing African Garb. I think Jim Gordon was on drums. Absolutely fabulous band.
@@bodegabonsai7069 Also, I seem to recall Rebop falling over at some point during the show. Does that sound familiar to you ? (The men`s room at The Academy was like a pharmacy....😊)
1968. University of Birmingham (England). I was in H.S. (6th form), on my dad's sabbatical. Our neighbor, the custodian for the dorm across the street, let me in. V. small venue, 17 y.o. what did I know? Must have heard Mr. Fantasy 2 or 3 times. Couldn't forget this one. Nobody quite knew what to make of it. So, drink more Strongbow & Ansell's.
...ooooh mr winwood,.......what big eyes you have!.........great piece......music like this will never be made again,....only one thing missing,.......dave mason...
I was touring with Traffic then and this was not my favorite tune. But I still love their music lol. My partner and did their tour sound as "Activated Air Audio Services".
It's a Mercenary song; '40,000 Headmen' "...couldn't make me change my mind....on my trail...someone told "me" not to waste my time." Richard (The Lion Heart)
Someone pointed out to me back then that Traffic always played independent of each other: each member kinda doing his own thing, but also bringing it together in unison. That was so cool, I thought. Watch it here and see - and then compare to Mick & Keith, for example, who seem to perform for each other.
i teach guitar and you wouldn't believe some of the mindless drivel that passes for music these days. i teach my students some older songs and they become addicted to the great stuff of long ago. i also remember the $10 bag of weed and seeing hendrix, the doors santana etc for $3.5O.i was really pissed off when i had to pay $4.50 to see the stones and later, the who.oh yeah, and when i saw the stones, stevie wonder was the opening act. not a bad show!!
Mr Blotto of Chicago would be the closest one could get today to the brilliance of Traffic in the early 70s. Lots of their tunes are on the Wayback Machine at archive.org.
the long hair thing in the 60's..... beatles started it i guessss... etc...the hippie trip as good back then. thot it would last forever...the govt put an end to it... HAIGHT ASbury ETC,.. phenomenon of the 60's...

If this song were 10 minutes longer, it still would not be long enough!!

Agreed. I could listen to the story all night long. Love Winwood. Firing 20 shotguns...,
or 40,000 minutes longer...
Chris Wood's grace notes here are so hauntingly elegant & so beautiful. Combined with Steve Winwood's voice, this song brings comfort to our soul.
This song still gives me chills...had the album. What a time it was then.....the best music

This song really helps show the band's talents. A great song done by great performers
This is actually one of favorite Traffic songs.
Brett Koeshall - Me, too! I like the jazzy feel. A mysterious story, uniquely told.
One of the most mysterious songs of its time.
steve windwood was very good at that :)
One of Traffic best songs!

We grew up in the time of great music. Then the marketers showed up.
yes it was....
My babysitter brought over the Beatles Yesterday, 1966
When baby sitters were music instructors!
I was at this concert at the Santa Monica Civic. I remember thinking that this was an awesome band!
Bring back these musicians to sing us out of our current worldwide madness!
basicdata Lucky, musicians like he, Clapton, Morrison, Knopfler, are still around. The U.K. Still rocks.
Sadly Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood have passed....
I agree. Steve Winwood could sing out of the madness. How do you feel about thinking the world was mad 4 years ago? It is much worse than I could ever have imagined now.
First heard this in 1972, it has that soft sullen sound, fusion of jazz and rock. Still sounds great.
I was there! 5th row center. Stoned out of my mind.
What I would do to see Traffic in there hay day. I'm starting work on a time machine!
purple micro here.
Steve looks pretty loaded here....
Stevie looks like he was right there with you.
I got to see them in Durham just before they released Low Spark. They did the whole new album plus 40,000 and other greats. Magical. Steve in a white suit, Capaldi and Wood perfection.

good ole 70's feedback......no classic rock song can be complete without it!

Timeless...Chris Wood the Man.

Luiz Fernando Carvalho I know exactly what you mean
It is sublime,
Luiz Fernando Carvalho You know English!
Steve Winwood is the answer. Check out Clapton Winwood - Can't Find My Way Home song, you will like:)
You express yourself very good. I agree with you.
Chris Wood, master of atmosphere. His work on Hendrix's last album as well.
I used to sing this to my daughter instead of reading her a bedtime story.
I regret not being there then...I was 9...and in Italy! I still enjoy it today though! Thanks for posting, I love it!
lol in 1972 I was racing motocross in Alabama listening to to Traffic,Hendrix,Zep,etc. Didn't even get high yet...
One of the best Concerts Ive been to and believe me Ive seen a few!
Maddie Malow You were at the concert in 1972?
How about a University of Birmingham (England) dining commons in 1968 - Headmen hadn't been released yet.
Thanks very much for sharing footage of this wonderful concert.

Richard Feld you knew them??? I'd give my right arm to meet Chris Wood, honestly.
This has been on UA-cam for 10 years and only 197,000 views? What gives??!!
It's a Mercenary song; '40,000 Headmen' "...couldn't make me change my mind....on my trail...someone told "me" not to waste my time." Richard (The Lion Heart)
glad they got that feedback under control fairly quickly!
did enjoy 72, good 10 dollar a bag weed, 7 dollars for a ticket and a bottle of boone's farm!!!
Amazing.... Brasil psicodelic.....
This was part of my first acid trip.....and many subsequent ones. Great words to contemplate this mystery called life.

I was there! I'm one lucky SOB!
Is this available on DVD somewhere? Love to have this whole show. Quality is great.

Is this available on a dvd since it was filmed here?
This so brings back Purple Owsley- Monterey Purple to many. Brother Stanley led me to Jesus. Could do a lot worse. Could do a lot worse.
Yeah, welcome to the cantee
n is a great version too.
Steve and Stones Akron Rubber Bowl? that's where i saw them together!
Still a tasteful morsel even all these years later.
...I worked @ the Santa Monica Civic around '75. Would clean the place after the shows & could spot a roach from a Camel non-filter @ 10 paces...

Steve's pupils were really dilated. It must've been very dark in there.

Wonder how much acid they dropped pre-concert?

Actually, they each took LSD showers before the concert.
What I've tirelessly been trying to figure out with my associates is how they managed to get the lsd in the water pipe system.
Alice Morales All you can SEE is pupil, there's no iris. That's the trip eye.
Steve does look stoned out of his mind here much like Carlos Santana when he performed Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock....
I used aside in those days but now I take antacids. lol

this band has a good mix of instruments, very well done , don't make them like that anymore.

To me the emotion in his voice just doesn't match his face. It's effortless for him to sing as he does, like magic or something.
