  • In this video I share some first impressions of some samples of these new bottlings from the Springbank Distillery, which I got to try in a virtual tasting I joined through Kensington Wine Market out of Calgary, Alberta. First, I give my first impressions of the limited release Springbank 10 Year Old PX Sherry Cask Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This special release from the Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown is the first in a series exploring Sherry Casks. This Single Malt Scotch Whisky was matured for 7 years in a refill Bourbon barrel and then 3 years in a fresh Spanish Oak PX Sherry hogshead and bottled at 55%. I follow these up with my first impressions of the Longrow 11 Year Old Tawny Port Cask Scotch. This Heavily Peated Single Malt Scotch whisky made by the Springbank distillery in Campbeltown Scotland was matured for 7 years in a refill Bourbon barrel and then 4 more years in fresh Tawny Port barrels. I love Springbank and Longrow and feel lucky to get a chance to try these. Find out which of these whiskies I would buy if I ever had the chance. Cheers.

Makes sense about Longrow heavily peated adding layers of complexity compared to the SB distillate being drowned in PX sherry.
Having said that… I’ve tried the Longrow 13 Cabernet and will be comparing that to the new Longrow Pinot 15…. But in general I’m gravitating more towards less lipstick and more distillery character.
    Cheers 🥃

Yeah I hear you about the Lipstick John! I was reminded of that last night as an ex-bourbon Deanston 18 outclassed(or at least held its own) against a Red Breast 27 Year Ruby Port Cask.
I passed on that Longrow 15 Pinot as the only store I saw it in wanted $425. Sounds pretty fantastic though, glad you've a bottle. Cheers 🥃

It is a tough call but I'm with you on this. I did a head to head comparison as well and the Longrow came out on top. There's a reason why Longrow Red series is mostly a hit every year. The peat integrates really well with sweetness especially red, fortified wine sweetness. The Springbank lost it's character under the super rich PX but if they are going to continue to do a yearly wine finish Springbank, I think they should go for lighter wines like Chardonnay, White Port or Sauvignon Blanc, then I think the Springbank character could mash up better. Cheers my man, this was a much needed review on the whiskytube 🥃

I think you've hit the bullseye on this issue. PX is an overbearing maturation in my experience. It covers everything with sweetness. A Palo Cortado, Fino, Manzanilla, ect or White Wine finishes would allow the SB character way more room. There's a Longrow 17 year single cask that I missed out on a few years ago that was a Chardonnay Cask. By all accounts it was excellent. Let's see how the next 4 in this series go. Thanks for dropping in, cheers 🥃

Just recently tuned in to your channel - and been watching past reviews - really happy to see all the Springbank and family reviews. I am a big fan of all 3 expressions. I am fortunate to have been able to get many versions of all three. I opened the Longrow Red Tawny Port a few weeks ago and really enjoy it. The reviews of the Springbank PX kept me from pulling the trigger in the short window that I could have gotten it. I missed the Springbank 15 2022 but have the 2021. Also good. Also currently enjoying the Hazelburn 14 Oloroso. Great reviews - just subscribed!

Glad you're able to get your hands on so many of their expressions. I rarely can get much these days(a lonely bottle of SB10 in the last year), so I really relish these opportunities to try samples of the limited releases. Cheers 🥃

I hope to someday taste my LR Reds.......don't hate on the collectors!
My liver can only handle so much single malt. I'm not a flipper, just hoping my kids can profit from the stash when I'm gone. Or I'll live long enough to see me stop feeding the FOMO.
Thinking of the SB as the first in a series is tantalizing, but not at triple retail. I might sell one of the kids for a fino or Manzanilla but not a PX.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast

Trust me, I know that tenuous balancing act. I have many unopened bottles, including a Longrow Red 10 year Malbec, simply because I know I have too many open. And you're right, if they remain unopened while working your way towards them, if your circumstances change they can be moved on. Practical and sensible decisions.
I'd say fair trade, the kid for that Manzanilla when it releases! Cheers 🥃

SO, i believe u had chosen stronger peat/smoke in the DNA of the LG malt (during processing) rather than the external (finishing) peat/smoke of SB - or sweet port over PX . . . I prefer PX, it has staying power on my palate. PLus, I never was a fan of wines-k(e)y or wine-finished malts.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Рік тому

That could be the determining factor! Interesting angle on it. I am certainly more partial to Oloroso than PX. Port can be tricky to do well too, always risky. Still, I'll take a chance on Port quicker than Rioja, Pinot noir, Amarone, ect casks. Cheers 🥃

i got two 10PX with US retail price, i opened one in store to share it with staff who saved me a bottle. I was expecting too much sherry like the local barley 10, aka investor's holy grail
Surprisingly end up better than i expected, although its still sherry dominated, but you can find some springbank DNA in the bottom of the dram, and some floral note that i rarely detect in springbank, which is interesting

You sir, are a gentleman for cracking and sharing it with that staff member. I like your style. It's great to take care of those who take care of others. Glad you're still picking out the SB DNA. I think I mainly only got it at the backend of the palate to the finish, but I'd have to check my notes as the memory is starting to fade. I drank it in a blind that also included SB10 and SB18 so the Springbank DNA was on full display there, maybe helped take away from his one for me. Either way, glad you're stocked up on this one, It's a rarity in my parts. Cheers 🥃

I commented at the time that I ranked the Springbank 10 over the PX version because I felt everything I loved in the 10 was being drowned by the sherry finish.

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast

I think you nailed it. The beauty of that 10 was covered up in something way more common. I preferred both of the SB18 and the SB10 over both of these, though the LR Red was either 3rd of 4th overall. That was a killer tasting. I think I had to PX 5th.
That LR10 Malbec sample winged well and arrived in my midst today! Thanks again man, that was an unreal collection of samples. started with the Daftmill and it was a classic. Cheers friend 🥃

In late 2017/ early 2018 While doing my weekly walk through the flagship LCBO in ottawa on the corner of Rideau Street and King Edward...one day I saw about a dozen bottles of Springbank on the shelf. There was 3 different age statements and the 15 was in the middle of them so I grabbed it. (knowing what I know now, I would have grabbed at least one of each and maybe more! LOL). And about 3 weeks ago the SAQ in Quebec held a lottery for rare and hard to find spirits, I bid on about a dozen bottles and won the springbank 15 year old! So I have either a 2022 or 2023 bottling, I havent taken the foil off yet so cant see the date stamp on the neck yet. But as the 2017 bottle was so amazing, I am happy that I have a spare.
