I am a sound boom operator in the Spanish community in NYC and I do all 3 position's when we work in production mode because of the low budgets that they have all the time.
I don't know why I didn't watch this when you guys released it, especially since Allen is featured in the video. This is the real types of video we need.
@@SoundSpeeds Allen, would you be interested in guess speaking, via zoom, to my students? I teach photography, filmmaking, and broadcasting/streaming to high school students. I’m in the L.A. area. Thanks for your consideration.
I would have liked to see the bottom of Allen's caddy. Is it on rollers or does it have tripod-like legs? I too love the Robo cups and find them very useful on a film set.
The caddy itself has a round aluminum base and there's a 5 wheel base it fits on below that. 5 smooth roller blade wheel casters (www.rockler.com/translucent-skate-wheel-casters-non-locking) and then the two layers are binder clipped together. If I want to remove the base and make it lighter for when I don't need the wheels, I can. I can also remove the center plate from the base, add an umbrella weighted base and it'll hold a Sportbrella XL. Check out this video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/tbVqIpdTGLs/v-deo.html
Using a Deity Connect Wireless Lav... What's the best lav upgrade with at least a slightly smaller capsule. Using when I host a weekly Amazon Live stream.
So wait? A Sound utility actually has their own cart and equipment that they bring? I thought the mixer supplied all of that stuff assuming its a full 3 person sound team. What specific stuff would a UST bring that a mixer wouldn't have?
#mailbag So I just decided to start my career as a Boom Op and you guys are really helping me with gathering crucial information about this stuff. So my question is: What exactly Boom Operator hears in his headphones? Does he has his own recorder/mixer where he plugs his boom mic, hears it from there and then sends the signal to a mixer? Or has he just a wireless sender that he can hear the signal from? Or just a wireless receiver to get the signal from Sound Mixer and plugs his Boom through cable to a Sound Mixer's gear? What solution is most common? I ask this question not only because I am intrigued and want to know the answer but also I really really want to win this cap. It's very cool. Thanks for this videos and channel I really appreciate your work!
I wish you referenced pictures of what he was talking about sooner there could've been way more as it's really hard to kind of see what he's talking about without knowing what he's talking about.
Hey I bought the V-Mic D3 and within a year it no longer worked on its own, it works when being fed phantom power but the battery internally doesn't hold a charge, I loved the mic but used it only a handful of times and never in like a wet environment and as far as I know didn't drop anytime. It's not in warranty or anything just seeing if it's a loss or if I can resurrect this bad boy!
Nice collab guys always love the vids you all killing it and you are giving audio the respect it disservice much love from Australia and I just got a deity wireless interview kit grate bit of kit btw thank you
#mailbag As someone who is just starting out UA-cam who is on a budget, it is really worth it to buy a cheaper recorder like the zoom H1n to use with a D3 mic or do I just stick with the camera’s preamps for audio?
If I'm on a budget the best way to record spoken word in windy conditions is using a lav mic (under a shirt or something) amirite? Cuz wind protection for SDCs is expensive... Is that right? Any other tips, that will help me record in windy conditions? #mailbag also, also also... how will the v lav sound if I plug it directly into my camera? Is the signal hot enough if I turn down the preamp gain all the way in the camera? I have an eos m btw
#mailbag Hi Andrew, I’ve been using the V.lav for quite sometime now and I always encounter a static noise whenever I plug it in a Zoom H1N recorder, am I missing something? I’m using the lav because I don’t want to use the built in mic of the recorder. Thanks!
#mailbag G'day, as a film student who has just invested in some kit, and is looking to get more, what would you recommend as their next investment: a TC generator or a wireless system?
hi Andrew #mailbag , just got the smic2 and I am looking for the most suitable rycote blimp and deadcat. Which one are you recommending ? Ive checked the deity 3rd part recommended accessories.
#MAILBAG : I recently bought Sennheiser HD 206 (studio headphone) is this headphone worth buying now as a studio headphone, I'm on a very budget. also it has very low volume when connected to smartphones
#mailbag I really appreciate your Videos, in which you collaborate with many different people from the industry! One of my most favorite videos is the one on how to wire different outfits for women and men. In that episode we get a good look at how you communicate with the talent. However, the actors seemed very calm and focused, a scenario that often doesn't work out like that on commercial shoots with inexperienced customers that maybe get in front of the camera for the first time and may be quite distracted by that fact, their script, their product... How do you approach someone like that with a lav-mic? How do you check your mic in the middle of the shoot (especially on a talent of different gender)? How do you handle them dropping the transmitter and reseating it themselves with cables dangling now all over the place and introducing noise? - All those scenarios one easily gets overwhelmed with on set, both the talent and yourself the sound person.
#mailbag I've jumped down the Deity rabbit hole this week watching all your videos, what a great experience. I'd love to see your take on professional audio monitoring in different circumstances. How would you approach a studio vs. live performance? How would you overcome latency issues? I appreciate the effort put into every video; such professional work.
#mailbag • ok! So I know how to properly boom, I what things to get to make my sound cart the 2nd best place to be on Set (1st being Crafty). Now what about hearing what I'm recording? Can you guys give us 3-5 headphones ranging from "Broke Community College Student" to "Blossoming Professional" to help us not only look good on Set but also hear the great sound coming from our Deity microphones?

It does indeed. The sound mixer is a huge Back To The Future fan

What are the best headphones for boom operator. Are they open back or closed back headphones.. great video as always
I'd say open so you could hear the director/teammates when the microphone doesn't pick em up
Closed back for isolation so that you only hear what your mic is hearing which can help you tell if non-dialog noises are interfering with the take.
