A wonderful sharing of this classic in a simple country setting. There truly are days like this that inspire us all! Not only is it well sung, but we get to experience a precious moment with you! Thank you so much!
For me, a special part of folk music, is the fact that theres different versions depending on where you learned it I learned of this song via some lyrical online website when looking at some other lyrics, comparing them to the version i know Found this song there But as i didnt know the tune, i had to search it up And i guess the version of the song im singing is the one you sang The list of which versions of folk songs, tell a story of who we are Although with the internet, it may no longer be about where we traveled, It is still very personal thing, and it connects to memories And when you come across someone who knows a different version, even if its just 1 word difference, its a conversation starter of talking about where we learned our unique version It turns a personal thing, into a communal sharing thing And being both a personal, and sharing attribute, sums up what folk is so much And thats why i love it (Although i will refrain from learning multiple songs at the same time, because i dont just want 1 memory, i want many stories to tell)
Cecil Sharp travelled around the country collecting traditional folk music which was gradually being lost. This one he collected from my great grand uncle William King, who sang it to him. Sharp was friends with Holst, hence how it came to be used as part of his Somerset rhapsody. I love this song as it makes me feel connected to my ancestors, and this version is beautifully sung, thank you.
Sung in the Palace Gardens behind Southwell Minster in Notts
This video is beautiful in its simplicity and utterly timeless! It could so easily be 1904, when Cecil Sharpe first collected this song.
Oh thank you so much. That means a lot!

Hi thanks for your lengthy message. I only just saw it. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts 🙏
I love this one so much 💚💙💜
Thanks 🙏
Gustav Holst included this tune in the first section of his 'Somerset Rhapsody'.
Oh i did not know that either! There are quite a few folk tunes incorporated into classical aren't there? 🙏
